But not the year before those ;) :p

Just so you know, this is a conversation I have at least once a week with my other half.

It's that good? I was thinking of getting a short-zoom L and a longer L, like 100-400. That way in two lenses, I'm covered from 39mm to 640mm.

Could be worse. Your other half could be a TIGER

The 24-xxx are not wide enough as a walkaround zoom on the 1.6x crop cameras, in my opinion.

Where do you stay? I stayed at the Gage Hotel in Marathon or at the El Paisano in Marfa when I used to call on Sul Ross State. LOVE the margaritas at the Gage! ^:D

I stay in Alpine at The Maverick Inn, right across the street from the university. It's an interesting place, and one of those places you kind of have to know what room to ask for. Some are quite nice; others, not so much. It's very old (not that the Gage or Paisano aren't either), but recently extensively renovated. Think old roadside adobe motel, but redone inside with all new furnishings. The key to staying there is to get a deluxe king or queen room, because those are larger and have had more upgrades done to the bathrooms. The regular rooms are tiny and tend to have window AC units. But all of the rooms have wonderful beds, better towels than most full service big chain hotels, ceiling fans, and lots of locally crafted furniture and accessories.

And I agree with you about the bar at the Gage. I'm definitely having dinner and a margarita or two there sometime this trip, since I haven't been over there on my last several treks out here. Their rooms look nice too, but I've never been willing to give up the convenience of being in Alpine to making the drive over from Marathon, Marfa, or Fort Davis.

They are building a Hampton Inn in Alpine, btw. It's out west of town, headed toward Marfa. It will finally give this place a nice hotel that's part of a big chain, since the local Best Western and Ramada choices are so awful.

I just looked up Alpine on Google Maps. That place is just a tad remote. :D

I'm just a few blocks from the Smith Street tower. Shall we storm the barricades and demand our just compensation? :D

Um, yeah. It's a major pain to get here because of that. I left home yesterday at 9:30 AM EDT and arrived in Alpine about 7:30 PM CDT, 10 hours later.

you're out numbered one-to-one in that conversation, and you are outnumbered two-to-one here. :p:cool:

There is an Aggie in our midst (occasionally), as well. It's okay, though. He seems to be one of the two-percenters :D

JEdward appears to be lurking over in newsstand and travel safety and security threads today. Consequently, he can't defend College Station as the coolest place on the planet.

AFAIK, J.Edward isn't an Aggie.
