South America.

They are saying that the plane left GIG at ~7pm CDG time. At around 04:15am CDG time, the mechanical failure messages were sent. Wouldn't that mean the plane was much closer to CDG than GIG?

That sounds like the middle of the Atlantic ocean to me.

I thought the plane left at 7 GIG time , which is midnight in CDG, so 415 am CDG time would still be closer to GIG.

At it's furthest point from the coast, the flight would have only been four hours from Monrovia, Liberia.

By the times they are releasing, the flight should have been near Cape Verde.

I was thinking the same thing and have heard reports of it being all over the place. It's surprising that there is so much confusion over the location of the plane (even if it is approximate).

hmmm....

I watched the video here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle6407081.ece and it said 7pm CDG time. But the translation could be off.

When was the last cruise flight crash not related to terrorism?

rolov is correct. CNN's timeline reports that they left GIG at 22:30 GMT which would have been 19:30 local time. I was reading conflicting reports on this earlier this morning...

I could have sworn I read that the FDR starts sending out a signal when it detects water. Still, that's a whole lot of ocean to be able to detect that ping if it does.
