For example if I were to take a job and wish to become a citizen of Switzerland, I expect to have to learn French, German, or Italian, even though most people have very passable english.

Ah, you must have missed the memo. Official languages are not inclusionary. The PC Police are going to find you and make you watch MSNBC for even thinking of something so insulting.:rolleyes::rolleyes:
This is my OMNI post of the day. Oh yes, poop! |

People that come to the US and don't speak English don't get great jobs. Everyone that I've worked with from a foreign country has spoken English. There is a big disparity in the incomes between the two.
'Official languages' are . Immigrants that don't learn the language get by as best they can and their kids grow up speaking English. Over time it takes care of itself. It's not an issue. This is my OMNI post of the day. Oh yes, poop! |

Very borderline indeed. I wondeer why CM is so antipathetic toward that poster altho I have seen posts of his that waft a supercilious aroma into the air.
As for why...I'm not sure that getting into details would be the smart play to make. Maybe that discussion is better suited for a Panthers game; as I'm sure the building is pretty quiet this time of year. :D |

Official languages are to standardize tests and signage. We as states should not have to distribute everything in 18 languages. It costs all of us a lot of tax dollars for as you correctly note, people that don't add that much tax income to the system.

Non-English speakers take a translated version of the Texas standardized test (TAKS), which includes things like English proficiency... Rather than hold kids back who do not pass because they cannot understand the material due to language barriers, we let them go on to the next grade and wonder why they don't graduate high school. |

Our education system is more concerned about teaching to pass the TAKS than teaching students how to learn and think on their feet. :( |
When I first moved here , I was 10 years old and I spoke Zero Ingles.
I would go to school and not understand a single thing, I pretty much learned english watching cartoons. In NY they had some sort of standarized writing test that you needed to pass at the end of the year , so as I started understanding a little bit more , I would also have to attend an after school english writing class. I still don't know how I managed to learn so quickly and then pass the writing test. |
