H I would go to school and not understand a single thing, I pretty much learned english watching cartoons.

In NY they had some sort of standarized writing test that you needed to pass at the end of the year , so as I started understanding a little bit more , I would also have to attend an after school english writing class.

I still don't know how I managed to learn so quickly and then pass the writing test.

It's q lot easier to learn a language before age 14 or so, especially when totally immersed.

Because you learned how to learn, instead of being taught a test.

rolov, I enjoy your posts. In addition to your  sense of humor your random line breaks amuse me to no end. Something about the phrasing reminds me of satirical haikus.

Completely agree. I learned Spanish before English, and it has helped me to maintain a level of proficiency in Spanish that I doubt I would otherwise have. When I haven't traveled to a Spanish-speaking country or dealt with Spanish-speaking clients for a while, I will get a bit rusty with the spoken end of things, but there's always a base-level of proficiency there. My ability to read or understand spoken Spanish doesn't seem to diminish noticeably, regardless of how long it has been since I used it.

It even carried over to making French much easier to learn once I was in High School. I'm guessing it's general familiarity with how Romance languages are structured that helps.

It was eye-opening to see how much more difficult learning a truly foreign language was when I got to college. My semesters spent studying Russian did little to help my GPA, and I can remember very little of it today. Basically, I can say hello, goodby, please & thank you, and "Where is the Post Office?"

No word from sbm12 yet. Negotiating your way down the toll-road to Tocumen International must be difficult after you've been shaken-down in the Casco Viejo.

Well, the bump gods laughed in my face this morning. My flight was zeroed out for the past few days, but after being put on the list to volunteer (and being told they would likely need me), there were enough seats for everyone. The GA gave me a CO currency coupon and thanked me for being willing to help out.

Oh well, maybe next time... :(

(Almost) same here. I was seriously thinking about taking the Kiosk's suggestion of putting myself on the bump list for this morning's CLT-IAH. In the end, getting to work on time trumped potential Certs. Of course CO would have to tease me with a potential VDB on a day I can't really take advantage of it. :D

Russian totally axed my GPA, but I ended up spending a year in Russia so it is ok.

Delta Air Lines is supplying some aircraft from its Northwest Airlines subsidiary to offer free charters to evacuate elderly residents and people in assisted living facilities in Fargo, N.D., which is preparing for the possibility of heavy flooding.

You should go to the post office and try to stop the mail.

I didn't even bother trying to speak it when I went to Moscow last summer, as I had forgotten so much. Essentially, all I had retained was the ability to phonetically sound out Cyrillic words.
