Looks like a fun welcome for V Australia at LAX. :) An oddity--the writeup mentions QANTAS, but not UA, who also holds significant routes between the US and OZ. And how on earth are they going to make money on this? The writeup specifically talks about how fares are so high and they're going to bring it down (indicating $375-not sure ow or return-in April of last year, when fuel was twice the cost). It sounds bunk. Here are the economics: They claim 350+pax, max fuel is 48k gal, so about 140 gal/person/flight (or about $200 of fuel each way @ current prices**ETA: this is IATA's global price paid at the refinery, not a US/OZ airport price)--note that I haven't calculated anything for cargo, just assuming pax+baggage is max allowable weight. If you're assuming a 1/3 rule for fuel, A/C, and operations (probably a safe bet, possibly more weighted to the A/C costs), then we're talking about $1200 RT expenses for an airline, per average pax. According to the article--not sure the original source, but it sounds like press release-speak "Because of tight supply, Qantas has historically been able to charge around 1500$ for a round trip flight between the two cities." So, aside from knocking maybe a couple of hundred bucks max off the fare, how is he going to bring prices down? |

Too soon? :D |
It was great to meet all my fellow Boxers (those whom I had not already met) at the DO. I had a blast and especially enjoyed brunch and our Box reunion in the E P Club on Sunday afternoon.
Hartmann, great choice of bruch locations. |

I believe the BF seats were given out based on revenue. I know fozz was up there, so he may be able to shed a little more light on it.
Interestingly, I was given both. But after hearing there were very few golden ones, I opted to use those. :) Hartmann thanks for putting together an awesome brunch, it was lots of fun and good to see all. I'm still miffed at what happened on the plane, but i am disappointed to hear that it was "abused". I've heard mixed stories so I'm not sure what was right and what was wrong. Every time I was on it, I never saw any alcohol in the cockpit, I watched everyone leave it outside in the galley. |

From my understanding it was indeed revenue based. Some folks were given golden tickets while most folks were given white tickets.

All this stuff about people being in the overhead bins got me thinking (always a poor proposition :D). I was reminded of those capsule hotels they have in Japan, and it struck me, capsule airplanes! Everyone in Y gets a lie flat bed with an LCD screen overhead! It's Awesome!

After three weeks of slacking off, I'm finally caught up on my own FM, as well as my entries for the PB FM. BTW, does anyone know who the trip to GVA last month in the PB FM belongs to? It doesn't have a FT handle attached to it.
