I've heard good things about the resorts on St. Lucia from sort-of picky people. They've flown in and took helicopters to the resorts (why spend a couple hours in a van when a reasonably price 15 minute ride gets you there quick)

The cruise experience there is sub-par. The area around where the ship came in was downright seedy, and the shore excursions were all meh. I haven't experienced any of the resorts on the island, so can't pass comment on them. I'm sure the ultra-luxe resorts they have there are nice, but my lackluster experiences there wouldn't have me dying to get back. If heading back to that area of the Caribbean for an extended stay, I think I'd aim for some of the smaller resort islands surrounding Guadeloupe, or The Grenadines.

The company that is looking at me offers a helo service, and some of the TripAdvisor reviews on said property are cursing their choice of road transit vs. helo. the price of the helo easily outweighs puking in the back of the van because the roads really are that bad.

When I went we did the US flights. I was actually a US gold at the time (comped to CO in 2004ish and the rest is history) and the flights from PHL were OK. I'm sure that they are typical US service now. At the time I recall paying ~$650 for the flight and got the other one on points.
I stayed at what was the HH down there for a week. It was nice enough, but I wouldn't stay that long unless you really had nothing better to do with your life. We went diving three of the days and another day took a tank out into their reef and had a good time. But that is no longer a HH now so not so useful for points whores.

We skipped the drive-in volcano but did some hiking on the days we weren't underwater. I even rented a car and we drove about a bit. It was a fun week, but not really all that amazing a destination. I also have a good friend/former co-worker who is a native if that comes in handy eventually.

If they'll pay for your work permit I'd consider the job. It is definitely a nice hopping off point for various other trips in the areal, and it is a job, if nothing else.

It depends on how far from the airport the property is. The ones up towards the north (near the old SLU airport) are a serious PITA to get to. But they have repaired/rebuilt some of the roads in the south making things a bit better. But it is still an hour or more drive, even with decent roads, to the Jalousie resort (former HH) and then probably another hour or two more to the northern resorts.

We did the helo one way and the van on the other. The helo was definitely a lot of fun.

Also, you might think that there would be a lot of traffic to justify more flights, but AA tried 4x weekly service from JFK and had to kill it. There really isn't enough demand to justify more flights so the few that do fly there have to pay for the luxury.
