Weird question of the day. Is it possible for VOIP to have a several second delay? I've had a couple of phone calls with one person today and there these long pause from when I finish speaking and when they start speaking. It's like the news broadcast from Iraq years ago.

Yes. If there is a high latency with your connection the delay in transmission can be pretty obvious.

If there is a real delay in the connection, you should be able to hear yourself still talking after you're done, and your voice also won't reach your ear in real time. I had to deal with that when calling home from overseas, and interruptions are very common...if the other party interrupts you before your voice reaches their side, it also has a tendency to cut off what you hadn't yet finished staying.

I'll add that to my list of why I hate VOIP.

VoIP is great if the network is tuned properly with QoS. Another issue is that VoIP is usually lumped onto existing networks; having the phones on their own vlan is a great way to boost the quality and reliability of the system. I'm hoping to do that in the office I work in eventually.

Couple more bucks, but it looks good.

The line isn't worth sweating getting back for your flights home. IMHO.

I wouldn't risk it going in to my flight home (though I briefly considered that). This would be on arrival from EWR and then the next afternoon where I don't really have anything booked. If I can find a decent place to stay on Tobago I think I'll end up doing it.

Ouch. Was this just a freaky crash or did you do a proper garage sale?

I honestly don't remember the crash so much, but I'm quite sure it was related to my general inability to ski well, and also the fact that we were skiing in western Massachusetts at Thanksgiving on the first snow of the year. It got icy in a hurry and most of that bruise is because I essentially hit the ground, not snow, when I crashed. It was bad. Great photo though, right? :)

I'm going to make a suggestion that my company considers a strategic acquisition of the Sheinhardt Wig Corporation.

But only because I want a legitimate reason to hang pictures of giant toasters on my office wall.

Here's a surprise for you - LOTS of voice traffic is VoIP on the backhaul runs. Way more efficient for the carriers that way. The delay problem can come from lots of things, including the fact that they are using VoIP rather than traditional trunks, but don't blame that necessarily on VoIP.

And, when it is operating correctly, you'd never know the difference. There is also a big difference between consumer VoIP and commercial products, but that's a whole different story.

most VOIP is not an issue, VOIP setup wrong or in a saturated network is a nightmare.

If I were to setup a large voip installation in an office already having a network and had a big budget I may in fact setup an isolated network for VOIP traffic only linking them at the router where the QoS would be strictly enforced. A VLAN can do similar things of course, but a VLAN can also be unsupported in some older offices using crappy switches.
