you know, I never seem to read the fine print! If I go to SIN in January I will probably stay at the Sheraton with my free nights. I however thought the promo had already started. I would have worked on my FFN with Hyatt this past week if I had realized the promo didn't start yet!

kluau88 Jul 31, 2004 7:58 am

Seems like there are better ways to use the free nights than at the Sheraton Singapore if you ask me.

Sure, but I dont live anywhere near the luxury St Regis properties ! SIN and PVG weekends will suit us fine for a free hotel night or four.. :p

rcs85551 Aug 1, 2004 2:07 am

free weekend nights

Sure, there are - but for many participants, the free weekend nights are restricted to categories 1-4 this time. So forget about the St. Regis :(

ws8n Aug 1, 2004 5:41 am

Glutton Sq

Looks like all of you will be able to check out Glutton Sq given its recent extension till Feb. It's open till 3am or 4am (on weekends), so perfect for SIN run overnighters ^

exactly. Unless one of the hotels comes out with some really low rates I will just burn my free SPG Cat1-4 nights.

michswiss Aug 1, 2004 3:43 pm

Sign me up as a maybe on this one. I should have a couple of those free SPG weekend nights available and could use a weekend with several other nutty FTer's. I should be able to confirm as a positive sometime in OCT or NOV.

izzik Aug 2, 2004 6:38 am

slowly but surely...

UA just released slightly lower V fares for travel through Dec09.
6 day min stay.
$788+tax EWR-SIN

hurry up, UA!

restlessinRNO Aug 7, 2004 2:35 pm

UA NRT-SIN and v.v is now B777 !

What do I have to do to sit on the UD of a 747? I checked my seat assignments today and UA has switched from a 747 to 777 NRT-SIN. :td:

UA 837 NRT-SIN & UA 838 SIN-NRT, Jan.14 & 17.

I just called UA who told me there had been "no flight change". He was unsympathetic when I explained that this was a 747 flight when I booked it. I asked him about changing from SFO-NRT-SIN to SFO-HKG-SIN which is (still) a 747. He said this would involve paying the current (higher) fare plus a $100 change fee. Not a happy camper. Perhaps I should feel happy I wasn't downgraded to coach!

restlessinRNO Aug 7, 2004 5:09 pm

BTW my seat assignment du jour is: UA 837 NRT-SIN 9J & UA838 SIN-NRT 9B.

This is after re-reading 777 Business Seats - Row 9 Experiences?

GoingAway Aug 7, 2004 5:24 pm

Thanks!!

They stuck me in 11B when they switched the equipment for SIN-NRT ... No thanks!! I'm now across the aisle from you in 9D ... thanks for the heads up on the change.

Anyone else coming back via NRT may want to check your new seat assignments for this leg. @:-)

kluau88 Aug 7, 2004 9:22 pm

Looks like I've been bumped into 9A for the time being :) Given that there's still 5 months to go, I wonder if we'll be scrambling to get seats back upstairs if this changes back to a 747. BTW, this is the 777XI/XC version at the moment.

IIRC any Int'l ticket 'reticket to a higher fare' PAYS NO $100 fee. If the fare difference is only a bit, you can have your upper deck :D

(Unless the schedules have changed, NRT-HKG-SIN would involve an overnight in HKG tho)

cawhite Aug 8, 2004 11:04 am

For SIN-NRT, I'm now in 9F.... Thanks for the heads up!!!!

SanDiego1K Aug 8, 2004 3:20 pm

SIN-NRT: FTers in the tiny biz cabin

Let's see if I've followed the discussion. On the SIN-NRT flight, we have these seats:

9A kluau88
9B RestlessinRNO
9D GoingAway
9E unknown
9F cawhite
9H SanDiego1K
9J wireless

mjm, what lucky person is seated next to you?

mjm Aug 8, 2004 5:58 pm

I knew I forgot something Carol :D

Have to go book a ticket soon I think. Actually, as prices are pretty stable I may wait until after the 5th when the current credit card dedcution from my account takes place. As for lucky, hmmmmm.... with my new iPod and NR phones, I may be a less than conversational seatmate. ;)

P.S. to michswiss, maybe status noted and soon to be added to page. C'mon girl. They sell fine whiskey anjd play golf in SIN too. :)

The days are ticking by towards Crab Fest '05...............

If you haven't flown with them yet, you guys are going to love the difference with the Headphones. Enjoy them!!

You'll find me in my favorite "mini-cabin" seat, 8J, unless and UNTIL they make another change of gauge on this flight.....perhaps to a 319?? ;)

Best wishes, Dave

I think "at the moment" is the operative phrase... I held off from my favorite 8A/8J for the possibility of the XI/XC getting changed to an XP. Looks like 8 DEF are still available as is 9E...so who wants to be the lucky person sitting between GoingAway & me? :)

izzik Aug 26, 2004 8:22 am

hotel opinions?

I'm looking at Hotel 1929 as possible accomodation. Read a few reviews and the only thing that is somewhat distracting is the possibly dodgy neighborhood. It seems really close to Chinatown but is that going to be a problem in terms of noise and/or safety?

jan_az Aug 26, 2004 7:56 pm

Sin-hkg

Ah so thats why I was able to get 15A:)

Jan 17 06:45 AM depart SIN
Jan 17 10:20 AM arrival HKG Cabin: Upgraded business class

Kiwi Flyer Aug 26, 2004 8:09 pm

Yah flights are now booked.

Arriving from NRT Sat 15th 4pm which should give me enough time to dump bags at hotel before meeting up for drinkies.

Leaving for AKL Sun 16th evening.

Nah, you were possibly one of the SGN victims... When they changed the flight numbers (the first Chinese Fire Drill) some of us who were connecting HKG-SIN-NRT got changed to HKG-SIN-HKG involuntarily. Thanks to one of my buddies for clueing me in so I was able to get the 1K desk to change it back to the original routing without much whining.

Nice choice of hotel. Unique compared to the usual chain most of us here stay at.
It's actually IN Chinatown albeit on the far end. Just a few blocks to walk to the heart. Where its located; Keong Saik Street; used to be very much a red-light district but its been rather much cleaned up now. There are some nice eating places along that street. As its getting close to Chinese New Year, it can be a bit noisy but should be OK. I'm quite sure it'll be safe.....take it from a local.

welcome to SIN :)

izzik Sep 3, 2004 7:51 am

Hi..

Thanks for the comments - I'll definitely consider that hotel next time I visit Singapore.. for now, the Le Meridien has a very nice rate of 150 SGD/nt which is comparable to the rates at that Hotel 1929.

The designs are very inspiring, however!

GK Sep 4, 2004 11:19 pm

Whilst in the airport the other day, I had our e-tickets re-issued to reflect the flight changes, and can confirm we are in seats 17G and H on the HKG - SIN leg of UA895.

How many does that make now ?

Yeah, those pepper crabs were good. Priceline has some pretty decent deals in SIN, too, if you're on a budget like me.

Put me down as maybe, as I'll be traveling to Asia and quite possibly SIN around that time but am waiting to pounce on a deal.

(FYI, Air Asia can get you to SIN or, from more places, to Johor very cheaply if you're in the region but not in SIN. However, no miles. :( )

Reservations made.........

We now have in place a reservation for 30 people at No Signboard at 7:30 on 1/15. I advised them that I would possibly be calling closer to the time to amend that number (upwards most likely) and they were cool about it. :)

I gave the hotel number as a point of contact, but if any of uyou wonderful people in SIN care to allow me to use your Handy as a contact number the restaurant would be happier. Drop me a line any time and I will chat via e-mail with you about it.

i have seen many tv programs recommending this place before so maybe this can be reserved for Sin DO 2006 (i have never tried it before though, sorry). It's called "Crabs & More" (or "Bai Xian Guan" in Chinese)and specializes in crabs. It is located in Joo Chiat, and the one and only bus which services that road is SBS #16. http://www.baixian.net/

There are also several bak ku teh stalls at Joo Chiat Rd. Once done with Joo Chiat, one could go on to nearby Katong where there are many other food outlets awaiting. There is an area where there are at least 3-4 stalls selling great laksa. The hunt for gd food never ends in Katong!

As for hawker centres, i suggest checking out the Old Airport Road's hawker centre as an alternative to Lau Pa Sat. Prices are generally lower than Lau Pa Sat's, variety may be a bit better than LPS but the downside is they don't open to the wee hours of the morning though. I bring my friends there for satay, char kway tiao, bbqed chicken wings etc. but yet to be fortunate (or shld i say, EARLY) enough to catch the elderly couple's famous 30min-wait rojak!!!!
