I'm Confirmed!

I was so annoyed this morning that I was unable to attend DUS IV, that I just decided to book SIN today. A slight consolation for missing the trip down the Rhine. The current prices to SIN seem fairly reasonable, and upgrade space is available. :) I've flown to SIN in the past in coach, and I prefer not to repeat this experience. mjm could you please move me to confirmed. Thanks.

Jan. 13 UA1273 RNO-SFO
.......... UA 837 SFO-NRT
.......14 UA 881 NRT-SIN

Jan. 17 UA 882 SIN-NRT
......... UA 890 NRT-LAX
......... UA 889 LAX-SFO
......... UA6440 SFO-RNO.

All segments upgraded. Lots of NC space available folks, if you want to join me on the UD of the 747! :) I routed thru NRT so I can have a beer with mjm at the NRT RCC. Returning thru LAX solely to earn more status miles. (True FTers will appreciate this.) Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Two UD seats on 882 already claimed by Chicago FTers, and hopefully adding a couple more to the UD soon! We'll be continuing a great weekend by having a fun flight home! :D

kluau88 Jun 27, 2004 3:14 pm

I might be booking this very very soon :D

SanDiego1K Jun 27, 2004 4:16 pm

I've been influenced by all you wicked people to ticket now instead of holding out for the 15% discount with a Friends and Family cert.

Jan 13 - SAN-SFO
............SFO-SIN - UA869 via HKG

Jan 17 - SIN-NRT - UA882
............NRT-LAX - UA890
............LAX-CLD

All upgrades are cleared. Look for me in 15H or 15A

OK, who is in charge of obsessively compulsively checking to see if there is a fare drop so we can all flood UA with voucher requests? :D

Yea!!!! We'll be waiting for you in the HKG RCC!

I'm In ...

Looks like I'll get to experience those massages I keep hearing about.

I'll be looking for Cheryl & Sweet Willie in ORD and joining them for the outbound trip

iad-ord 6E
ord-hkg 15H
hkg-sin 15G (anyone I know in 15H?)

Return is via NRT (15G) and JFK (since Carol may have gotten the last NRT-LAX upgrade that is available right now) with a puddle jumper home from there.

Yippee!!!!!

So it looks like our ORD-HKG-SIN is (currently) GoingAway, bseller, SweetWillie & myself on the UD, picking up SanDiego1K in Hong Kong.

Return group also looks like fun on the UD with restlessinRNO joining the fun!

If I do this, I do not have any SWUs right now but I will have some when I become 1K in Jan next year. When do those get deposited? Will a Jan 12/13 flight be late enough that I will have them banked in my account?

Answer yes and I will be in :)

You have an excellent memory -- I just told someone today that you were one of the first FT'ers I ever met outside of the DC area, and the first one I met because of the FT luggage tags.

Looking forward to a great trip.

SanDiego1K Jun 27, 2004 8:38 pm

indo79, there are likely to be lots of expiring SWUs in January that will be available. If not, I'm happy to advance you SWUs for later ones that you get that you can be assured of your upgrades.

As SanDiego1K mentioned...you won't have any problem swapping. Check your PM

mjm Jun 27, 2004 8:58 pm

Wow! What a great page to look at today. Have been dozing I think and have missed all the posts. Time to spend a bit of time this afternoon updating the page and adding names.

I will post again here when that is finished, but let me just say I am really happy to see the list growing and am doubly happy to know I will get to see some far flung friends again. :) ^

Back at you shortly...........

Mike

Okay enough debating :)

1/13/05 UA 786 OAK-LAX
1/13/05 UA 1248 LAX-SFO
1/13/05 UA 869 SFO-SIN (via HKG)
1/17/05 UA 882 SIN-NRT
1/17/05 UA 852 NRT-SFO

Ticketed and confirmed in C. In 17A on all segments except segments 1/2 where I'm in seat 2A/1A. FYI, by looking at the seatmaps on the International segements it seems like it's all occupied by savvy travelers as rows 15/16/17 are quickly being occupied.

On that note I better get myself out of 1A as that seat belongs to iluv2fly ;)

Looks like I've dragged another FT'er on this itinerary too! Wireless is in the process of ticketing as I type.

kluau88 & wireless -- welcome to the UD party!

Question for the locals: Depending on what happens with Marriott rates & Sheraton availability (and rates), I was looking at our corporate hotels: The Fullerton Singapore, Grand Plaza Hotel & Raffles The Plaza. Any insight re location as to whether they're good alternatives for the weekend? Thanks!

you guys can count me in. I will be there a couple days earlier as my parents live there :) I will buy the tickets in a couple of days/weeks after I figure out my finances. (just put earnest money on a condo and moving to a new rental apartment next Tuesday, and off to SF this Friday for the weekend)

Tentatively I am looking at Jan 11/12 - Jan 17

As for the hotels, all 3 are pretty close to each other, well Singapore is a small island. I would recommend the Fullerton, it is new, close to Boat/Clarke Quay and they have a nice bar.

As for the seafood restaurant, the one in Geylang has no air-conditioning, however, the one in Kallang Oasis do have it. So majority wins in this case.

See you guys there in 2005!

Edited to say thanks to SD1K and CaWhite60156 for their little favor extended to me and leave 16/17B for me! the other choice seats have all been taken, by FTers! Otherwise I will have to settle in 25C :)

Any LCC's out of SIN?

Each time I come back to this thread I get more psyched to go. My problem is (well not really a problem) that I will get both Mon 1/17 and Thurs 1/20 off work. So I'm loathe to waste them hanging around DC  after a thrilling FT-do in SIN.

Does anybody know any LCC's operating out of SIN that I could fill out my week with? I'd like to spend a few days hanging around somewhere in the SIN area (e.g., VietNam, Bali, S. Thailand, even Darwin, etc.) If I can find a good fare. I'm up for anything other than coming home.

I'm getting the sense that I should do this soon before the entire upper deck of the 744 is full. :D

ValuAir www.valuair.com.sg is a new LCC with great service from the crew and cheap fares. Sample trip report can be found in a.net

Air Asia www.airasia.com is also a new LCC

a third, Tiger Airways will be up and coming sometime this year as well

Not necessarily as you are departing on the 13th.

Sweet Willie Jun 28, 2004 3:55 pm

Anyone mind a roomate on Friday night? I'm arriving 11:55pm and will goto a hawker stand then hit the hay about 3ish. I'd be willing to split costs, I really don't care about hotel status.

Saturday I see myself with the need for my own room.

I've never been to SIN so excuse the potentially stupid question :p ... What's a Hawker Stand?

not a potentially stupid question at all. Hawker stands are food courts serving some great food, an example thread here from the Singapore Forum: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=308935

Some are open 24 hours, open air. A great place to get some chow and some beer.

Hmmmmmm, you are on the same flight as myself, you just might have to come with me on Friday night to a hawker stand and find out for yourself.
(I would be willing to believe others would be interested as well).

SanDiego1K Jun 28, 2004 4:28 pm

GoingAway, you can repeat Friday night's hawker run with Sweet Willie on Sunday, when transpac takes us to one for lunch. It's a Singapore must, and I'm looking forward to it.

I would be one of those "others!" (SIN virgin here too)

Punki Jun 28, 2004 6:46 pm

Edited because I had the wrong dates.

We will be able to make this one. :D

inkoherent Jun 28, 2004 7:09 pm

Nor4:

Unfortunately none of the new LCCs will get you anywhere on your list of possible destinations :( AFAIK Valuair only flies to BKK, HKG and CGK (Jakarta) right now and AirAsia only gets you to BKK I believe.

The destinations you mention are primarily served by majors and SilkAir which isn't an LCC from the pricing point of view at least.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in hot humid SIN :)

Definitely shooting for a "repeat" ... if ambien does its job again, I'll be good for a few hours to experience a little of SIN, no problem -- I only have two days there, after all. I'll likely have zero clue about what time it is or where I am but that's not important stuff :D

IIRC, you can get quite decent rates with Priceline at Marriott (www.biddingfortravel.com). I wouldn't advise on staying at the Fullerton, since it is the biz district, so a virtual ghost town on sundays. Raffles the Plaza is right above City Hall MRT (subway stn) so it is quite convenient.

I was at Fisherman's Village at Pasir Ris last weekend, and really enjoyed that place. There's excellent food at decent prices, with the sea just right in front of you. It's a pity it doesn't run 24 hrs, else turn-around MRs could drop by for quick beer and chilli crabs, satay, mee goreng etc...It's abt 10 mins away from Changi Airport :D

Try www.silkair.com
They have quite good fares for the summer, esp when you book 45 days in advance.

Alternatively, you can take a 45-min ferry to Bintan. There's a Club Med, and quite a few decent resorts in the area.

UA 869 is turning into a party :)

mjm Jun 28, 2004 11:52 pm

Dave M,

Got you down and looking forward to meeting you. Bring Lori along and we'll make a party of it. :)

Sweet Willie,

High time we broke bread again, or crabs legs as the case may be. ;) Glad to know you will be feasting with us.

seanthepilot,

Ah but could you do it any other way. SE Asia does have you hypnotized. :) See you there.

restlessinRNO,

A beer in NRT it shall be. And then a great weekend on the equator. Glad to see you can make this DO.

Carol,

Knew you would be there. Now that you are ticketed though I feel better. And I will sneak in a comment along the same lines here to you to Jan. Ladies, it is indeed a DO now. :)

GoingAway,

Deb, travel to Asia much? ;) You are the local pretty soon. See you a few times this winter. :)

Kev,

The San Francisco contingent is getting great representation. I will even have a walk to the HRC with you. *$$ is next door. :)

Wireless,

Another local from where I used to be a local. Looking forward to meeting you.

indo79,

It was destiny. We will have nearly as many locals as non on this trip. Cool stuff! Enjoy the flights.

So one and all, how do make the calendar move faster. This is going to be a great way to beat the post holiday lull around home.

I have updated the page and will keep it current.

See you all there...............

Mike

prncess674 Jun 28, 2004 11:57 pm

seeing everyone ticket so early really makes me want to go! I am low on $$$ at the moment seeing as I just flew in a few hours ago from the DUS DO IV. Since my mind is slightly ALTered right now due to lack of sleep I am going to do some research on cheap flights out of New Orleans.
