Pepper Crab Do - SIN 15 & 16 January 2005

Weekend of 15-16 January 2005, Singapore

mjm's webpage is up and will be kept current. You can find it at:

http://home.inter.net/mjm/sinrun05.html

Kiwi Flyer Apr 16, 2004 4:24 pm

If we go with that weekend I might even be able to make it this time. How definite is the date.

auh2o Apr 16, 2004 4:27 pm

Let us know when you find cheap UA fares without 6 day restrictions and then we can commit.

cawhite Apr 16, 2004 5:12 pm

I'm a definite maybe...always looking for a way to burn those SWUs

prncess674 Apr 16, 2004 5:58 pm

Sin DO 2004 was lots of fun. I have friends in SIN so even if there are still 6 day minimums I will probably still go. Too early to commit but it's on the calendar (in pencil :D )

jan_az Apr 16, 2004 6:37 pm

And those chili crabs.................................. :o

Make me a definate maybe

Calling mjm :-:

violist Apr 16, 2004 8:26 pm

on the return transpacific. I hafta hafta be back in the DC area
before Jan 20, tho.

Upgraded all the way through....outbound on 1/13/05, returning 1/17/05....

Hope its as much fun as it looked like it was in '04!!

Best wishes, Dave

Hopefully the people responsible for pricing this route will load some fares favorable for our objective :D

So True! Just for grins and giggles I put in a 6 day min trip and it came back with a fare of $1300!

I await these fares as well.

You can book, ticket and even confirm upgrades now for LAX-SIN (Q fare, 13 - 17 Jan, $ 1,000 USD), and then re-fare when/if the price drops.

Or you could try an award on the SQ direct flights (from LAX or EWR); 90,000 miles for C++?

from the Fare Rules for QLXPXSG:

6. MINIMUM STAY
NONE BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND SINGAPORE

jan_az Apr 17, 2004 11:45 am

Do the 15% certs work on these???

Not a bad deal if they do.........

And I do want more pepper craps :D

SanDiego1K Apr 17, 2004 4:19 pm

Count me in

mjm sure has, and I think has already picked the restaurant. Now here is where my brain will go funky, but I believe that Indo79 has recommended the No Sign Seafood - kinda like that????? - which he says has amazing black pepper crab.

Yummmmmmmm.................

It's great to have you back on our January Singapore run in 2005, transpac!

transpac Apr 17, 2004 4:40 pm

No Signboard Seafood
414 Geylang Road

jan_az Apr 17, 2004 5:10 pm

Next question

Mike we need you:)

I was wondering if folks are all planning to fly back on Mon which is the holiday here in the states - if we could have the pepper crabs Sunday nite. I am thinking of ticketing as someone suggested - getting upgrades confirmed and waiting for the fare drop:)

Jan

Kiwi Flyer Apr 17, 2004 5:36 pm

Are the pepper crabs Sat or Sun night? Or Friday?

Why I ask is that flights from NZ arrive mid/late afternoon but the return is the evening so I need to get it right before making any bookings. OTOH I may try to fit in with trip elsewhere as a stopover on the way over/back. Being towards the end of school holidays and the busiest tourist season down here I wont leave it so late planning this time. :)

PS I have left mike a message about this thread.

dhammer53 Apr 17, 2004 5:59 pm

If I haven't used my free international coach ticket by that time, I'll certainly consider claiming my place once again at the 'dinner table'. Did he say coach?

transpac Apr 17, 2004 6:11 pm

proposal

I think the plan might be:

some activities late Friday night for those arriving on UA.

activities during the day on Saturday

main dinner Saturday night

activities on Sunday

at least that's how it was for the first Pepper Crab SIN Do in January 2003.

Kiwi Flyer Apr 17, 2004 6:14 pm

Thanks. At this stage will plan on arriving Fri late pm and leaving Sun evening.

mjm Apr 17, 2004 9:21 pm

Pepper Crab Do is a go!

The Do is a go and is going to be retitled thiis year to Pepper Crab Do (overwhelming majority votes with the menu :) )

transpac gave us as fair a summation as we could want. Right weekend, right restaurant, and lots of returning food lovers. Excellent recipe for an excellent weekend.

I will post a page later this summer and either start a new thread at that point or reference this one. For the moment this seems as good a place as any to chat it up. Truth be told I may not be able to wait all the way until January and may have to recon the place a bit. ;) I think I will be able to manage an appetite again by the time the Do rolls around.

See you all soon,

Mike

P.S. Kiwi Flyer thanks for the heads up. I think my brain has been somewhere just east of Mars the past few days. :)

No Sign Seafood is highly over-rated. Costs about the same, but food is average.

As for those who hasn't bought tickets yet, burn those miles and go for SQ LAX/EWR-SIN . The SQ FC kit and jammies are good stuff, so is the Krug. ^ ^ ^ And for those who plan to stay longer, route it to KUL, or BKK with a stopover in SIN for the same number of miles IIRC. KUL and BKK bot have a bunch of SPG & Hilton props to do some early runs.

Hmmm...all this typing is making me hungry...i think i will have some pepper crabs tomorrow :D

transpac May 3, 2004 3:25 pm

I'll offer to host a food-court lunch run on Saturday or Sunday, in the 11 ~ 2 range? Chicken rice here, fish head curry there, etc. Any interest?

Sounds painful :(

I'm moving to SIN in June 2004 and would love to meet up in 2005 if y'all stop by :)

I nominate FTer jpatokal for food recommendations alongside the many other pundits in our midst ;)

My salivary glands are working already. As long as we don't have to hike for miles thru Singapore's sultry heat finding the best of each, I'm in. Well - maybe not for fish head. But otherwise.

mjm May 3, 2004 8:39 pm

Ink,

You are on the list then sir. :) See you in January.

transpac,

I will add that to the webpage (to go up in a couple months) and we can maintain a list of folks attending there. Had you Lau Pa Sat or Newman or...in mind? I think I could see swinging by for some of that myself. :)

:D

awww that hurts :p

my first crush brought me there for my birthday :D

No seriously I think it's quite good, definitely better than the crap Palm Beach that my parents think it's the best :D

I do admit prices have gone way up since their early days in Geylang now that they have expanded, but hey it's 2-3 times a year so I never fail to provide SGD$400 of revenue for the 2 times I take my family there each time I go back

Take a vote, I would like to try out other places too if this is not acceptable to the general community

oh btw, count me in as a maybe, my parents live there but I will already be back in Dec for my wedding so we'll see.

I'll take you up on that!! (So long as we don't have to wend our way through hundreds of locals with body piercings!!) ;)

Best wishes, Dave

Count me as a maybe... I'm feeling the effect this year of no first quarter international trips and don't want to make that same mistake next year!

It used to be one of the better non-touristy place for chilli crabs a few years back, but i think the standard dropped, or perhaps the particular branch didn't quite meet up to the mark.

Incidently, I just saw Channel U's food program about Roland Restaurant and it's famous chilli crabs. Might give it a try and see if it is good.

Well I'm thinking of this if fares drop/upgrades available (and yes i know i can book now, but i also have to pay now gang & hope for the fares go down; given i'm booking other stuff, that's not as good for me). anyway, i'll follow this but also want to throw a ringer out there (which mjm knows about). i'm allergic to seafood, so anyplace i go to has to have 1 - only 1 - non-seafood item or my meal will be beer.

Well this is the The official run for Pepper Crabs- so you will have to eat chicken satay @:-)

SkiAdcock May 4, 2004 10:26 pm

Hey jan, I said I only needed 1 non-seafood item - chicken satay works for me! :) mjm knows of my allergy and has 'watched my back' in the past on dos, so didn't think it'd be a problem this time. of course just having beer as a meal at an FT do - wouldn't be the first time ;)

SanDiego1K May 4, 2004 10:36 pm

Sharon, we had a great veggie dish in January, as well as the aforementioned chicken satay and some awesome rolls - about the density of cannonballs, but ever so good. Singapore has amazing food, and I am confident any seafood restaurant we land at will have non-seafood dishes as well.

Dun you worry about it. There are other selections on the menu. I think we ordered venison, satay and fish...err is fish considered as seafood?

bseller May 5, 2004 5:32 am

And this is bad,,,why???

Hi all,

I've accepted a 1-year job assignment in Singapore, so I'll be moving last week of May. I would love to meet with you all in January!

Jenn, how about being our on the ground pre weekend research team of inexpensive massage/reflexology places? :D Last year, 3 of we women went to many of the massage places in Chinatown. We had really good massage - in fact, went again the following day - but the professionalism lacked. My masseuse took a phone call while doing my reflexology. I'll be back in Chinatown in January, searching for that perfect place.

Affordable massage and pepper crabs - two great reasons to join the SIN run. Welcome aboard, and I look forward to meeting in January.

Aye! Aye! Captain! ^

I will get to work as soon as I get there, since I am a spa-diva myself! That's the first thing I will look for. Might take me a while to realize what "cheap" is in their currency! How much would you consider cheap?

Ahhh, sisterhood! January was many trips ago ;). I think that I paid $35 at the Conrad for an amazing one hour massage that thoroughly banished jet lag from my body and thought that as a good deal - til I got to Chinatown and found one hour massage or reflexology for $15/hour (well, the Sing equivalent). We went to Xiyuan Beauty & Aromatherapy, 208A Telok Ayer Street. There were a number of massage places in the neighborhood and I want to try a different place with better spa etiquette. You can spot them by the sign out front of two feet with all the reflexology points in gaudy colors.
