jani,

Welcome aboard, I will update the page with your info very soon.

StarG,

Will update the list and hope you can make it. We have got to fibnally hang out. :)

Re: the IC SIN, I stay there as I have become so accustomed to it in my visits to the little country. I like the facility, the access, and the prices.

Anyone who wishes to see what an IC room in Singapore looks like is welcome to come check it out while we are all there.

Best,

Mike

StarG Nov 30, 2004 6:42 pm

Thanks again, Mike & to Savage25 for the thread links.

Punki Nov 30, 2004 9:49 pm

If we can get a good short stay fare and juggle our workload, we might still come. What's up with the 6 day stay?? Forget that.

Savage25 Dec 1, 2004 3:31 am

Got this in the email today...if anyone wants to book into the Intercontinental or move to a lower rate.

Rates are SGD 143.00/173.00/203.00 for Deluxe/Shophouse/Club rooms respectively during the 14-16 Jan weekend.

*Book before 8 December.Your reservations are final and require full pre-payment for the entire stay and cannot be refunded, cancelled or changed.

If nothing works out with less than 6 days, why not burn some miles? Or take a vacation for 6 days and spend 3 days in Bali :D

Mjm, I'll be flying on UA 837 (SFO-SIN) on the 13th, so will seeya at NRT RCC

As for the hotel, may I know why are there so many staying at the Conrad?
I am considering Conrad, Intercontinental (info on either/both would be appreciated), or The Fullerton (familiar).

Will send you more flight details as date gets closer.
Thanks!

The Conrad is a Hilton property. You will notice that lots of us have HHDiamond in our profiles - we get treated very nicely at the Asian properties ;)

Kiwi Flyer Dec 1, 2004 11:29 am

The Conrad has a triple points offer - code H1. Doesnt seem to be any availability for the nights I am there but may be of use to others.

I admit that it is quite crazy, but then again I am just addicted to travel! And with such a fun group getting together in SIN city, who am I not to join in? I'll get into SIN on 14/JAN with CX715 and leave on 17/JAN on CX716, spending a day in HKG before heading home....

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Yayyyy! I get to see airoli again!

Singapore will be a big thermal shock for you, airoli, coming from a Zurich winter.

mjm Dec 2, 2004 5:13 pm

Crazy like a fox maybe? ;) The points, oh trhe glorius points towards status.

Oli, Welcome aboard, or Gruezi, wenn du auf dein Deutsch reden willst. :)

Look forward to catching up in January. Webpage will be updated very shortly (probably Saturday or Sunday).

A pleasant surprise indeed! If the airfare between SIN-HKG weren't so expensive, I would be inviting myself to your day trip. There's always "Simply Asia." :D

Hmm.. I'll consider Conrad as well. :)
Any 'special' treatment as HH Gold which I received from SQ PPS?
Thanks again.

Kiwi Flyer Dec 4, 2004 10:45 am

Put me down as a maybe for Sunday lunch and walk. I know I will need a good walk after dinner, lunch and 3 long SQ flights - probably wont need to eat for a week when I get back!

What time does the walk finish? (I fly out Sunday evening.)

izzik Dec 4, 2004 8:54 pm

oh yeah, please put me down for the friday night arrival munch and the sunday afternoon lunch as well.

Traveliter Dec 6, 2004 11:17 am

Well this sure sucks. I'll be missing this by one week. : : pout : :

BTW perhaps someone in this thread might be able to help me. When I was there last month, I stayed at the Pan-Pacific and got a rate of S$180. Now I'm looking and it's up to S$220. While this will be a business trip and I'll be reimbursed, I'm open to considering some of the other Marina-area hotels if the cost doesn't go over that. Obviously they'd have to have a broadband connection in the room (and I will REALLY want a fitness center), but beyond that I'm not too picky.

Anyone have any recommendations? TIA! :)

Oh for Pete's sakes, I should REALLY read before I post drivel like this.

OK, I've gone and read transpac's Web page posted at the start of this thread, and wouldn't you believe it, I will be there that weekend! When someone said "second weekend in January," I checked the calendar and noted that that would be the weekend of January 8-9. Turns out the meet is the next weekend.

That said, my husband and I don't arrive until late Saturday night (we're on the UA flight from NRT that comes in at 11:25pm or so). I can't make the Pepper Crab Do. I might, however, be able to manage the Sunday hawker centre thingy. Especially if cawhite60156 will be there. Believe it or not, I will be seeing her the previous weekend in Orlando (and neither of us live there!) for another meet for another social group we hang out with. Too funny.

I'll PM transpac.

I want in!

Chili Crab at Red House in East Coast Park, BEST in SIN.

SanDiego1K Dec 7, 2004 11:39 pm

Welcome, myn4! This year is going to be the best ever. We always get a great group of people - and the turnout has exploded this year. It will be great to meet an FT newcomer.

Thanks again.

As a HH Gold if you want access to the exec lounge (without booking an exec room or suite) you need to book a 'Business Room', which is one level down. It is worth it IMHO as the lounge is great.

I must say this is shaping up to be some do, pity I can't swing a trip out there at the same time :( .

monitor Dec 8, 2004 9:52 am

Now let me get this straight. Am I correct that this Do is all about food? Is there much else to do in Singapore aside from trying all the food? Have any massage and reflexology treatments actually been scheduled?

Is the Conrad that is being discussed the one that is advertised by Hilton as the "Conrad Centennial Singapore?" Would a couple of East Coast short haul sloggers be so disoriented by the flights over that the weekend will be finished before they got their feet on the ground?

I know that's a lot of questions from an intruder into this thread, but I figure that around here somebody has time to answer them and this is more than academic, because there are award seats available for that weekend on AF in C class (I know, it's not the same as F on AF).

Not only that, we punked out on mjm and much of this crowd about three years ago when we did not get to the Party in Provence because of business reasons (and also because we were punchy after having been caught in France on 9/11). It looks like we have over 400 posts to read before 12/22 on which date we would need to give the miles to Delta.

izzik Dec 8, 2004 10:06 am

Not only food. The theme was the chili crab.. but there's also the people who are attending.. as well as various other Singapore activities (spa/massage, nice hot weather, historical walks, shopping).

Yes, that's the only Conrad in SIN. True, this Do is a hair above 48 hrs.. but the party starts as soon as everyone passes through immigration on Friday night.. and I suspect there will be a shortage of sleeptime and an excess of Do-ing/partying/eating/shopping.. there's always plenty of resting to do on the flight back home. ;)

Would highly recommend a C/F ticket as a long-haul weekend can be rough.

SanDiego1K Dec 8, 2004 11:03 am

Monitor, if you are coming all the way to Singapore on an award ticket, I'd urge you to add another Asian city to your trip. It's a lot of miles to burn and a long way to come. The appeal for many of us is exactly the distance - it is a wonderful way to kickstart the quest for status. However, you'll be burning instead of earning. Of course, if you love to fly, then it is a great way to enjoy the treatment in a front cabin.

Consider Bangkok or Hong Kong, for example. Or if you are an Asian expert, you can be a little more exotic. I used Singapore s a jumping off point for a 3 day trip to Borneo two years ago.

Also, be sure to take the Singapore Airlines bus tour. It is about a 90 minute overview of the city; well worth the $5 or so that is charged.

Point well taken, but we've got gobs of miles and status is never a problem. Since our only *A miles are from USAir (remember that East Coast stuff), we can't upgrade coach fares on UA, etc. and the only awards available there there are in coach. I suspect that this might change sometime next year if US does not pull off the latest transformation plan. In that case, I would expect UA to match the US status so we could then party on the upper decks with all of you.

We prefer to take one trip and make one stop and, believe it or not, we've never been west of San Francisco. We can and would come into Singapore a day early and see some sights and do things such as the bus tour (thanks for mentioning it). And then, we can do it all over again to see another Asian city.

But right now, we're trying to clear away enough time for this trip, and should know for sure in a week or two.

violist Dec 8, 2004 12:19 pm

Hey, Mike -

Popping in after a long while:

My schedule has changed for the worse (I have to be in
Boston during the day on the 13th), and my Carol's has
prevented her from even showing up at all, and I can't
even find Bennie (she's currently in Vietnam or Thailand).
So I'll be alone and in economy:
0113 SQ 21 EWR SIN 2300 0655+2
0117 SQ 22 SIN EWR 1205 1700

Please sign me up for all 15th and 16th activities, and I may
get up early on the 17th to have a last party with you all
in the beautiful (cough, cough) SATS Lounge.

PS to Monitor -
As SD1K, JanAZ, and Bennie can attest, there's no problem getting
massage and reflexology ad lib - just walk down into Chinatown and
pop in, and they won't turn down those good hard SGDs from you.

Jet-lag will definitely set in, cuz by the time u arrive in SIN, it will be around noon on the east coast. If you reckon you will be up all nite, save yourself a nite's accomodation, and do an early check-in that morning.

Just make sure you have your 8 hrs of sleep though, else this article might prove interesting...

>>>>>I don't think that's the case, because the AF connection we have reserved has an all day layover in Paris (the thought of which Franny is loving) and we get into SIN on Thursday at about 7PM their time. We were figuring just to have a light dinner, a nightcap, and hit the sack in order to be fresh on Friday morning. What time will that be in New York?

>>>>>I'm way past the point of worrying about something like that. With the amount of calories that I consume, 12 hours of sleep each night would not help because it would still leave me with 12 hours to eat. However, if we could get the sleep time up into the 20s, that would not leave too much time to fill up, and I could imagine in that case one might lose a few pounds.

I may be in town that weekend - I'll know for sure by the end of this week.

Welcome to all and a more complete post and page update is not too far off now....

Looks like this is gonna be one heck of a do...

Ok all...

Since we are having such a big group coming in and considering that I'm based here in SIN till Feb, is there anything you guys want me to find out???

There are a few nice spas for the ladies... The Amrita Spa in Raffles The Plaza is nice but not cheap, there are also the Aspara spas located in Goodwood Park and Fullerton Hotels. But there are 2 absolutely wonderful spas located on Sentosa island too.

As for airfares to HKG for those who may be interested, check out www.zuji.com.sg as they have some cheap fares on UA which are mileage accruable for SIN-HKG. I just recently got a S$238 fare on UA to HKG before taxes!! Plus some of the UA guys and gals may want to consider doing a run from HKG to SGN as UA is giving triple miles for that flight!!!

Anyway, i'm trying to arrange for some door gifts from the airport for us, so fingers crossed.

If anyone needs me to book hotels for them using our corporate rate, which I posted earlier, also let me know.

Alright... Am looking forward to this Do... See you guys soon! :)

We would love to know which are the best of the cheap spas in Chinatown. Last yr we just walked in to one and got a decent massage for about USD15 hour. I dont think we are looking for USD 60 massages that we can get in the states. All suggestions for good cheap places would be great!!!
