Found: New outlet of No Signboard Seafood Restaurant

was just at the Esplanade this evening and saw that there is a new No Signboard Seafood Restaurant outlet there.. (lots of congratulatory bouquets outside the shop).

not sure if anyone wants to check it out during the SIN RUN next year; perhaps the view would beat the Geylang one (??) (not too sure whether the prices vary though) but it would certainly be much nearer for those staying at Conrad & Ritz C.

anyway, just thought i'd post the news here (la!)

last but not least, best wishes to all FTers for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

UA RCC pass for a FT. On this trip only.

I have one UA RCC pass. Free to the first fellow FT on this trip. Expires end of January 2005. Remember if you are in intl flight in C or F you will get lounge access. Please do not waste. FT PM only please. First person. One only.

RTWSTARALLIANCE Dec 27, 2004 10:33 am

Should I be concerned? UA upgrades.

Two of my four flights are on the waitlist for upgrade. This is uncomfortable. My UA status is 1k/mm. Should I be concerned? I am outbound SFO to HKG which is on the waitlist. My outbound SIN to NRT is also on the waitlist. I prefer not to leave SFO in Y. Read that as if I am in Y I will be on another carrier in F using points. I have loads of UA and AA points so spending those is always a welcome option. I would like to start the year with lots of UA EQMs. Opinions please.

GK Dec 27, 2004 6:06 pm

Sean and I are now leaving on the Monday am UA back to HK, as I have to travel on further west that evening.

Regarding Thailand, please do go to the unaffected areas, such as Bangkok, Ko Samui, anywhere on the Gulf of Thailand.. the country and it's tourism industry needs your support, but please, don't go to Phuket just yet, it will take a long time to re-build.

Also, since we are all fans of Asia, I'd like to propose making a donation to the Singapore Red Cross Appeal for the Earthquake and Tidal Wave Victims, see link to press release: http://www.redcross.org.sg/press_bayofbengal_appeal.htm

mjm Dec 27, 2004 7:24 pm

Our webpage has been updated again to reflect CGK's details, new Historical Walk attendees, and less time in Sentosa ;)

I fully support GK's suggestion, and would like to suggest that as we are going to be coming in at a variety of times and not meeting as a whole group until Saturday night that this can be most easily accomplished as a group at dinner Saturday night and then by asking one of the people staying on through Monday to drop by the Red Cross Building to take in any group donation we manage to collect.

I am going to have limited web access from 12/30-1/3 so any updates not done before then will be done after that period.

Wishing you all a safe and happy New Year.

have confirmed that SIN Red Cross accepts cash in Sing $ only..

Change in Hotel

Finances ruled in the end ... changed to the Sheraton with my free weekend nights, cancelled my Conrad reservation.

mjm Dec 27, 2004 10:21 pm

Page updated to show GoingAway's hotel accomodations.

A note to all coming to dinner:

The Red Cross is not the only one accepting S$ in cash on this trip. As our group is the size that it is we shall need to have everybody with cash in hand to pony up for the bill. A multi-spilt 46 ways on individual cards is not really feasible I think. Also for the ride from the Conrad to the restaurant and back we will each need a few bucks local currency. In past the ride has cost each person S$12-15 and dinner was not expensive at all. Everyone's cooperation on the local curency thing is much appreciated in advance. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, GK. My husband and I will be there for two weeks (beginning the weekend of the SIN run) and were planning on visiting Malaysia or Thailand the following (holiday) weekend, so this is good to know.

My dad is totally freaked out, and wants me to cancel my trip because "all of Southeast Asia" will be unsafe (he listed contaminated food, disease, and terrorists taking this disaster as an opportunity for an uprising). Oy vey. I'm going for work, and I can't really just cancel.

BTW Mike -- we are staying at Swissotel The Stamford instead of the Pan Pacific. Can you please update the itinerary? Thanks.

If you are not going to the coastal areas, I think you should do just fine.

On a lighter note, today's ST just mentioned a few places to eat. FYI, Maxwell Mkt and Old Airport Mkt are some of my favourites.

FAVOURITE QUICK EATS
'The best and cheapest tea in town'

For that quick bite in between rides

TEA TIME: Mr Zamir Ahmad, owner of the unnamed sarabat stall, serves tea, snacks and heavier fare such as nasi lemak. -- LAU FOOK KONG
When your tummy rumbles or you need a quick thirst quencher with no more than a few minutes to spare, what you need is fast food. And we're not talking Burger King or KFC.

WHERE: sarabat drink stall in Baghdad Street, Kampong Glam

WHAT: Best tea in town, samosas, malay kueh and Indian snack vadai

WHY: Affordable prices, convenient parking and proximity to Sultan Mosque

SOMETIMES, the best places have no name.

Proof of this are taxi drivers who swear that the best tea in town isn't found at Starbucks or Coffee Bean but a non-descript sarabat stall in Baghdad Street.

Furthermore, this stall, opposite the Kampong Glam Cafe, has the best bang for your buck - or less. A teh tarik - 'pulled tea' - will set you back just 60 cents.

The stall is hidden in the maze of shophouses in the area. A few foldable tables and stools make up the seating area, with the stall itself taking up a corner of the shophouse.

Parking is quick, affordable and easy. Just slide your car right beside the stall - and don't forget your parking coupon.

'It has convenient parking, toilet facilities and the best and cheapest tea in town,' says Mr Harun Anand, 47, who has been driving a cab for 14 years.

It is especially crowded near the time for Friday prayers, as Sultan Mosque is close by. The stall opens at 6am and closes at midnight.

Besides regular and ginger teas, samosas, malay kueh and Indian snack vadai are what keep cabbies coming back.

Heavier meals such as nasi lemak and mee siam are also available, with prices ranging from $1.50 to $2.

OTHER NOMINEES

603 Tau Sar Piah in Balestier Road - bean paste biscuits

Maxwell Market Food Centre at 2 Murray Street

Old Airport Road Market at 51 Old Airport Road

re "Historical Walk"

I'm interested in the Historical Walk, especially the part "Starting with the traditional Singapore Sling in the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel". :) However I'm a little confused. Is it Saturday or Sunday? Because it says "On Sunday afternoon, after the lunch in Little India...", but the lunch in Little India is noon Saturday.

Last yr a number of us went to brunch at Raffles and then the Long Bar - personally the brunch was very disappointing and a Singapore Sling was not what I thought it would be - but it must be done once ;)

Fare diff. refund from AA! Two weeks and we're there!!

Just rec'd a $167 refund on my tickets---AA has NRT on sale, and easily refunded the diff. b/n what I paid and the sale fare. Softens the blow to the bank account to be sure. They said there's still plenty of spots left (to NRT at least) for any AA/OneWorld's that are considering a "last minute" urge to JUST GO!! :D :D

I'm interested in the Historical walk as well. ^ Like jan_az, I've also heard similar stories about the Singapore Sling...so I guess I'll keep the expectations realistic.

Can't believe this is LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY!!!!!!! YEAH!!!! :D

GK Jan 2, 2005 10:48 pm

I am sure that Jan will agree.. the Long Bar does do other drinks as well !

Traveliter Jan 3, 2005 1:25 am

I won't be able to join everyone for the pepper crab do (husband and I are flying in on Saturday night), but we're still hoping to go to the Sunday hawker centre get-together.

I'll be seeing cawhite60156 a week before that, though, and will be passing along a special surprise for everyone. You'll just have to wait two more weeks to find out what. :D

Can't wait for you guys to get here!!!

Ok guys and gals... 2 weeks to go before our big bash!

I managed to convince the powers that be to pass me some door gifts for you folks, so that's settled. :)

Now as for the ladies requests for massage places, I went around Chinatown and found that they have a whole row of massage shops that just opened near the new Hotel 81 on Upper Cross Street. Hence, we could either take it free and easy and just stroll down the road and see which one catches our eye or I could call and see if I can negotiate a special deal with one of them since quite a number of you want to go for massages... PM me so I can get a rough feel...

I've got a last minute business trip but thank god I managed to push it so that I depart on 16 evening! Phew... The thought of not being able to make it was too hard to bear!!! :D

So for those leaving on 16 evening, we can meet up at the airport for drinks and shopping if guy need to buy anything from duty free... (I get a discount there...)

Alright, see you guys soon and as usual if you guys have any requests and want me to do any legwork before you arrive, let me know. :)

Cheers,
Gaz

izzik Jan 3, 2005 9:40 am

I'm leaving on the night of the 16th.. just 5 min before midnight, actually.
How late is your flight ?

Gaz, you have just moved to hero status! After all my begging, pleading, and yes - I admit it - whining, I had started to think that no one was going to come thru with any massage places. I suspect the easiest thing is for us to wander at will. There is supposed to be a Saturday lunch in Little India; if there is, I'm likely to want a massage/reflexology/whatever following that.

It's really all about the peanuts...the drinks are just the excuse, as if a few of us needed one... :D

sailaway75 Jan 3, 2005 8:06 pm

Oh Carol...

Carol... Thanks for the promotion!! :)

Anyway, I found an even better place by accident. There is this nice chain spa near the airport in the suburb of Tampines called B.E. and they offer a 5 hour spa program for just S$230! My colleague who tried it has been raving about the milk baths and scrubs etc... (Sounded to me like she was being cooked alive in a broth but then... duh.) Also, after all the walking in Little India, you might really need one!! I'll go and scout around and see if there are any massage places nearer to Little India thus doing away with the need to travel all the way down to Chinatown.

Izzik, I'm leaving for a biz trip on SQ408 departing 16 Jan 05 at 1620hrs, so I'll probably be at the airport at about 1500hrs. Might be a little too early to meet up with you unless you want to spend many hours in the airport! :p

Also, I'm currently waitlisted for business class on the flight from HKG to SIN on UA on the 14 which if I read correctly is the upper deck party plane... I recently made it to 1K, so I hope that helps my chances on getting on board. I decided yesterday that I'll take a day off, burn some mileage and grab the morning UA flight to HKG on 14, have lunch then come back on the party plane. Will keep you guys updated... I'm confirmed in coach for now, so fingers crossed.

See you guys real soon! :)

Cheers,
Gaz

Hi Guys, I am back from my X-mas trip and ready to join the discussion again. It also took a while for my trip to be confirmed ( I land at 08.00 on Saturday from Mumbai). Mrs. Miles will also be joining (but maybe not for the lunch on Sat.).

On Saturday at 12.00 we meet for a lunch in Little India. This will be a traditional Southern Indian meal (might be slightly different from what you are used to). It is 100% vegetarian and served on a banana leaf. Fork and spoon will be available for those who want eating equipment. For those who chose to eat the traditional way; only use your right hand please!
As a rendez-vous point I would like to suggest the Hindu temple on Serangoon Road. This is easy because all taxi drivers know this location. It will be a five minute walk form there.
The traditional Indian meal in Little India, Singapore was chosen by the discovery channel as one of the best 10 meals worldwide below USD5. That is saying something because it costs much less then that!

On Sunday at 02.00 we meet for a historical walk. It is Jan. so it might get hot (bring a hat), but it might also rain (folding brully). The rendez-vous point is already set at the Long bar. This is at the Raffles, but not in the hotel, but on the other end of the block, upstairs in the shopping arcade.
Maybe people could let me know how long the walk should be....... we are talking about a walk in a tropical climate.
