If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Another question - would it be a good idea to lower the credit line on one of my cards to increase the odds of auto approval? I think my CL with chase may be near max. But I don't want to do it if lowering the CL would prompt "eyes on my account"

Thanks again.
Heli
metes on the account should be no problem (as a CL will be lowered from a person too ) but just for less hassle why not

Is this a trap?

Background: I'm under 5/24 and haven't opened a new Chase account in over 2 years. My wife on the other hand, has more than a few open (7). 5 of those currently have usage except IHG and United. And by usage, I mean at least $5,000 a month in total.

Anywho, initially applied for CSP and get denial for 5/24, which I knew was wrong. I wait until pretty much day 30 to call to make sure if any account was counting, in particular an AU account, that it would be gone. Get a guy who is pretty rude and HUCA. Get a nice lady who says I should be good on accounts, but that she can't reprocess accounts that are denied due to 5/24 (This wasn't an issue for in the past applying with 5/24 and having it fall off mid-application so I'm not sure if there has been a change).

So whatever, I wait a couple weeks and apply again. Get the same denial. Call Recon and get a dude, and should have hung up. I play it somewhat dumb until he tells me its an AU account holding up my application. He seems to mention how many open accounts my wife has under his breath, so I guess he's looking at them being I was an AU. I reiterate I'm not an AU on any card open recently and he says he can resubmit my app and asks the job/mortgage questions. I give him my current job but he forgets to ask income. I mention our house mortgage and he asks why it isn't on my Credit Report. I tell him we opened the mortgage under my wife only as I was switching jobs at the time. He then says, "I see you have business cards with us" and I state those were for my private practice.

Time goes by and I know I haven't been approved since the card hasn't shown up online, but now I get a Fraud Letter wanting me to confirm the application is actually mine and to call in.

Is this a trap to get shutdown? Should I wait a few months?

Call in and explain. And you don't believe you are an AU on any of your wife's accts? Maybe she should call all the banks and double ck. The Chase rep. saw it so....

It's not a trap. Chase may want to approve your application but first wants to make sure you're you. Call immediately.

Thank ya'll.

Ya, I haven't had her apply outside of Chase in quite awhile, so I'm in pretty good control of what I'm an AU on. The only cards I'm an AU on were done before 5/24 was a thing, and I only do it when it has a bonus attached these days, if not, no AUs are put on application and I proactively remove them to avoid this issue. While credit karma isn't great, that AU account did come off; however, Chase is pulling Experian and not Transunion/Equifax, so it may be agency specific.

All I know is if a dude answers the phone I'm hanging up!

Does voluntarily closing a card risk shutdown?

Are there any data points on whether voluntarily closing a Chase credit card could trigger a review or shutdown? I plan to lay low on applying for a while but a couple cards have AF coming up.

I think (hope) I’m lower risk but it seems like no one is safe. In terms of newly opened accounts, I’m 1/12 and roughly 4/24 to 5/24 on personal cards. Plus another 3/12, 4/24 on biz cards, just got approved for Chase Marriott Biz last month. Have 9 cards with Chase right now..

Would appreciate any color on the risk of voluntarily cancelling cards!

Anything that puts eyes on one's account is a risk. If you're 9/24 with all 9 at Chase, there's risk, no doubt about it.

No one can tell you as every situation is different.

You either take the minimal risk or not. As while there will be “eyes on the account” it will not be a credit analyst or anything worse (not sure which department decides to close accounts).

That's fair.. Thanks. Although I only have 2 from Chase over the past 24 months. Also, out of the 8 or 9/24, 4 of them are business cards - does Chase see those?

Only if the bank reports them (unlikely but there might be an exception) or if they are Chase cards.

I thought they were all from Chase from the way the math worked out in your post. Nine cards from one issuer is still a lot, but if only 2/24 are actually from Chase, that should reduce the risk by quite a bit.

I searched through most of this thread and couldn't find the answer - has anybody been shutdown with an active Chase mortgage? Hopefully having a mortgage with them keeps me in the clear

What are you doing that you feel puts you at any kind of risk in the first place?
