Pretty easy to just apply for two relatives or friends and then not use the cards to get the free 1,000 miles there.

Still need their HKIDs and signature.

Even with my in-laws I have to ask...

Thanks! CCB's application page states only PR HKID is eligible, unfortunately for me. In my experience some banks are willing to give to non-PRs but would take longer in their vetting process. I worry that would cut too close to the Jan tax deadline. After all this card would only be used for tax.

Also - would the $240 annual fee be waived if I plopped on it 600K tax once every two years? What do you guys do on this card every other year without no/little tax payment?

So we're doing the unthinkable...paying our taxes early. In fact we're having CCB pay IRD well ahead in November cos CCB considers credit balances as an exception and will call to enquire.

Eh? Why do you only pay tax every other year? I think you may have misunderstood how the tax system works here.

One pays for two years worth of tax on year 1 (and 3, 5, ...), and on year 2 (4, 6...) you either top up for additional liability (usually much less) or get a refund. I've lived here for 4 years and this is what has been the case for me. Isn't it the same for you guys?

I'm afraid Man Ho in the Marriott has changed their terminal recently, from:

"MARRIOTT HK LIMITED HongKong" (merchant number 011201171003001)

to

"LUXURY HOTELS INTL OF HongKong HK" (merchant number 503034470110293)

And the MCC has changed from 5812 to 7011 even for Unionpay. Gotta use Flyer World there from now on...

For the first ever payment for tax, I paid for the current year and the next year.

For subsequent years, I paid the tax bill in January and April in advance (while the tax year runs from April to March of next year)

No - and I've never heard of anyone else in that situation.

For every one I know of the situation (assuming you have a reasonably steady salaried income) is, for example:

In around May each year (let's take 2015) you fill in a tax return for the preceding tax year (1 April 2014 - 31 March 2015); in around August 2015 you get a tax assessment; the tax assessment is the difference between the provisional tax relating to the year 1/4/2014-31/3/2015 that was assessed in August 2014 and what you actually earned in that year, plus the provisional tax for the tax year 1/4/2015-31/3/2016; you then pay that tax 75% in January 2016, 25% in April 2016.

If you earn the same amount each year then you will pay the same amount of tax each year.

However, if a large part of your income is variable bonuses then the tax bill each year will obviously vary.

I've never seen a scenario where you pay tax earlier than you would under a Pay As You Earn scheme where it is deducted monthly at source.

I don't understand why you have to be so careful about their codes. If you are supposed to get bonus for dining, shouldn't you get the bonus regardless of how the merchant processes it and you can argue with the bank for your bonus points?

Sxc - most dining offers (HSBC 6x Rewards of Your Choice, SCB up to 12X dining bonus) are all MCC (as per merchant) dependent per promotion terms and conditions.

As with Singapore we have little recourse if the MCC is not what we expect to be

Unqualified unmitigated *yes* to that one. Even I've not received any email or mailer in the post - I confirmed my offer details with two CS over the phone.

Great advice, as always, many thanks. Just confirmed with CCB CS I am eligible. So finally get to play CCB 939 properly. Just have to figure out the best way to run up $12,800 a month on all five of my CCB Visa and MC.

BTW: Are CCB CUP cards eligible as well this time?
