Thanks!

You just call them and ask if they'll release a seat for you. MPC will generally put you on hold, contact someone at CX for confirmation / denial, and then report back to you. Takes no more than a minute or two. More often than not expect to be disappointed.

Thanks a lot for this. I got lucky this time I guess - waited about a minute then told me it was confirmed!

I read somewhere upthread that you don’t need to have sufficient A.M. to waitlist - or has this changed?

I was planning to waitlist for some flight the other day and I don’t have enough AM, but the screen didn’t allow me to proceed saying that “you don’t have sufficient miles”. But I surely don’t want to transfer my credit card points to AM unless I’m sure that the waitlist clears - a bit of chicken and egg situation.

Is there any way around this?

AJ747M Apr 11, 2018 9:33 am

Data point: only waitlist available for HKG > LAX two weeks out, in all classes (booking economy). Got DM relative to call up and open seat for me- they checked and quickly confirmed they could open space. Confirmed but apparently it will take two days to issue the ticket.

sfo to bkk Apr 11, 2018 10:39 pm

Could use some guidance here:

Confirmed reservation on Asia Miles J 70k reward SFO to HKG on Nov 16 and continuing HKG to XMN on Nov 20. I was looking to book all the way to XMN with only same day transit in HKG, but award availability did not allow it for same day connection. Connection was only available to XMN two days later. The interesting thing is that when you book online at Asia Miles, there is availability HKG to XMN on Nov 18. I called Asia Miles and they said that inventory is only available if booked separately and that married segment inventory is not.

My reservation needs to be ticketed tomorrow on 4/13. I'm inclined to just book it as is with a two day layover in HKG and wait-list the HKG to XMN on Nov 18. Fall back plan is to no-show or cancel second leg to XMN after arriving HKG and request for taxes refund. And book with Avios for the short flight to XMN on Nov 18 if wait-list does not clear. Understanding that I would end up using more miles or an extra change fee of $40 if waitlist clears and reticket.

Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance on what to do here as an alternate? I don't even know how to check for married segment inventory. If I booked the whole thing with Avios, it is available but at a whoping 200k Avios. This doesn't make sense that partners can book this all the way through buy CXs own Asia Miles members can't. It's like we are being penalized.

Will calling Marco Polo help, I'm a lowly Green member?

I couldn't find a thread specifically around award booking changes, so I'll ask here.

I have a confirmed PEY ticket waitlisted for J. I noticed that seats on Qatar Airways became available on the same route (via DOH) -- how do I change my CX PEY ticket to a J ticket on Qatar? It doesn't seem like I can do it online. Does CX waive 'other channels' fees if they are unable to be done online?

Waitlisted HKG-LAX on 1/5/2019 for all classes since March

In early March, I submitted Waitlist for HKG-LAX on 1/5-7/2019 (all classes).
Nothing happens yet.
How is the chance to be cleared? Any specific point, such as 6 mo or 3 mo ahead?
Should I call CX to improve the chance?
Any inputs will be very appreciated.

percysmith Apr 23, 2018 7:42 pm

Jan 2019? Isn't that going back to school peak season?

Specific point: 14 days .
Non-premium won't be available because of the loading in the back

Not reasonable to expect much availability between the well-documented CX booking windows. Broadly speaking, premium awards need to be claimed by 300 days before departure, or inside of 14 days.

Call CX only helpful if you are Diamond/Diamond Plus (are you)?

“Non-premium won't be available because of the loading in the back” Thanks for the info. But what do you mean “in the back “? Are you saying that no chance for Economy or Premium Economy? And, there might be some chance for J and F within 14 days?
thanks again.

no chance from Economy, some chance for premium Economy/business/first inside 14 days
tho given those dates I will shorten the window into three days for the outbound (inbound remains 14 days).

thanks. If that’s the case, I might look for other alternatives, as wait till the last 3 days seems too much pressure if don’t wanna end up with buying a last minute one-way ticket.

Hi everyone, i would like to ask if there is any chance to get a redeem J seat for any flight from TYO to HKG on 29 Apr (4 days away)?
It seems CX524 has higher chance but I’m not sure if CX rather keep the seat empty. Thanks!

percysmith Apr 25, 2018 1:42 pm

You'll probably clear in, closer in.

Thanks for your reply.
Do I have to be on waitlist in this case? Because my booking got cancelled on 24 Apr (5 days before the inbound flight).

I spent incredible amount of time last month searching an award on ba.com to book using Alaska Miles. Not sure why I thought I could transfer Chase UR to Alaska but that is not true. :(

My question is I can see the availability on ba.com for CX but not on the AM website. Anyway to get around this?

fakecd May 1, 2018 5:28 am

in fairness to CX.they are reasonble in releasing seats for U on flights showing J9C9D6I3 for upcoming flights in 2wks time to australia. my waitlist cleared in less than 24h. i am only Green using asiamiles to redeem but i input my Emerald QF.number on booking not sure if that helped

CAWineNerd May 1, 2018 7:25 am

Here's a really basic question - when is the best time to call them? The last 5 times I've gotten the "Sorry we are busy, leave a message". I left a message the first time - they called back in 4 days when I was busy.

LOL, worked like a charm at 3 AM HKT. Now I'm on the waitlist.

One more question: I requested R/T upgrade as it is fewer miles (105K vs 120K, ORD-HKG). Is this a good move, or should I request two one-way upgrades?

You should request R/T upgrade. Waitlisted segments are likely released one by one. You may be forced to ticket the upgrade separately and used 120K. If you request R/T upgrade up front, you can request Asia Miles to refund the mileage difference (120K-105K) upon completion of your trip.

May (as well as March) has to be the lowest demand months to go to Aus tho.

I'm waitlisted for an award J ticket for CX846 (Jul 20) and CX831 (Aug 2). I've also got a Y ticket held but ticketing is tomorrow and I think if I let it expire, the price will jump even more. What is the collective wisdom here?

Dunno how likely TPAC flights are over the summer (esp to NYC) and while my outbound is flexible, I have to be on CX831 return. Maybe just buy the economy tickets and bit the 1800HKD cancellation cost if I get off the waitlist? (Also, as an aside, the rebooking/cancellation costs have gone through the roof - it used to be 600HKD a pop and it runs from 900HKD (lower cost regional) to 1800HKD (TPAC)...)

HK$1,800 for ex-HKG to Aus. I paid that twice over Easter cos my mother and brother had a spit fight over dates, forcing me to rebook mother for full C revenue initially (then cancelled for I, followed by Priority Award 2).

None from Aus to HK (outbound released before inbound, and my mother cannot be "unhedged" before a trip). Fortunately I have an AUD Amex courtesy of CAANZ which I can drwa A$4k and put back in once redemptions were eventually released.

Free cancel from Aus to HK? That's good to know. But I assume you have to pay the fuel surcharge for Aus-to-HK (whereas we can avoid it ex-HKG)? They get you one way or another, coming and going!

percysmith May 13, 2018 9:32 pm

Yes but fuel surcharge is peanuts compared to (A$4,400 for one-way D fare - A$450 trading cost of miles of the standard J award I eventually cleared for mother)

Is anyone with insight able to guesstimate how likely J seats are to open up on CX246 CPH-HKG on 11 June? I am currently in PEY waitlisted for J.

Hard to say. EF #s posted below.

Working for you is PEY seems to be relatively busy (based on seatmap), but they're still selling the full complement of PEY seats perhaps in anticipation of op-up. J class on the seat map looks so-so, not too busy but busy enough that I class is reduced. I'm not an expert here but I feel like they'd way rather sell PEY and then take your miles to move you to J.

Unfortunately, the general vibe of the board is that mileage upgrade tix are in a different bucket than straight award. Sometimes they're available when regular awards aren't, and other times IIRC they're NOT available when straight awards are.

i would.keep waitlist J. its still early mate. but dont buy Y fare, you can always buy econony as last minute if you need to fly. data shows.wide open but its 3mth out so they wont
proactively release a seat knowing its summer.

why dont you buy ex-china J? plenty of cheap options being discussed

kawaii May 14, 2018 1:18 am

I looked at ex-China J on those dates - about 4K USD. I'm tempted but would prefer to burn some miles and avoid the positioning flight. Is pricing better than that starting from somewhere other than the usual suspects? If so, send me a DM!

happyvoid May 14, 2018 5:32 am

I want to book a flight on cathay from lax to tokyo while stopping in hkg for a few days. is it possible to be waitlisted for the round trip from lax to hkg first then call in once those flight are confirm and add the extra legs?

When did they start to ask for passport number? I cannot even remember mine... I have more than one passports and they expire every 10 years.

What does this mean? Will 4 seats open up on this flight? I'm a noob when it comes to waitlisting.

MikeBOS May 21, 2018 7:16 pm

I have searched but not found the answer to this: my son is ticketed BOS-HKG R/T in October in J. I booked these tickets for him at T-360, but he has since moved to NY and would rather get on either the JFK or EWR flights if possible. Both are waitlist only. Can I waitlist those segments in his existing reservation even though the origin will be different from the currently ticketed flight? Or do I have to create a completely separate itinerary with two waitlisted segments and hope that both clear, then redeposit the original award?

Thanks in advance for any guidance...
