So, I'm waitlisted for an J class upgrade on a flight this weekend, HKG-EWR. Waitlist will empty tomorrow. I called MPC this afternoon to see if I could nudge them to confirm. EF is showing J7C6D0I0W7R6E6. They wouldn't confirm. However, agent told me to call every day until the flight to inquire about confirmation. I've never heard of this before. Is this a standard practice? I assumed I would have to wait until departure date and try instant upgrade at the airport.
|
This is probably route dependent (I have been doing R->U upgrades between YYZ and HKG consistently for the past 5+ years), but I would say I score most (like 85%) of my redemption upgrades within the last 4 days of departure after the waitlist has expired. U class seats do get released within the last few days up to departure. I usually monitor ExpertFlyer loads "crazily" during the last few days, and call every time I see a change (increase) in the selling loads. Many times as soon as the loads change I called and got the upgrade seat. This goes all the way to as close as T-3 hours that I got a seat when the load went from J1C1D1I1 to J2C2D2I2. Interestingly while I was trying to ticket the redemption upgrade, I saw that I got an op-up and managed to call MPC back to cancel the redemption upgrade.

A very interesting thing is in CX system, you can hold a ticket forever for free |
Advice on CX award ticket
Hello everyone. I'm currently confirmed for a first class award ticket from MNL-HK-SFO on December 11. However my return ticket has been waitlisted since August. I checked KVS and as of today it says F2 A2 for the December 19 SFO-HK leg. (I'm more concerned with long haul anyway), what are my chances of getting confirmed? At what point should I give up? My deadline is December 9 but that seems to be cutting it too close. Any advice is appreciated! I am a Marco Polo Gold member. Thanks in advance!
|
None. Push the deadline to 15 Dec, but it is very likely you will be flying outbound with no assurance there will be redemption inbound. Happens a lot under post-22/6 now.
|
*sigh* thought so... thanks.
|
This really happens a lot nowadays... Previously I usually get at least some kind of round trip tickets confirmed (mine were mostly companion, not straight redemption) before my departure, and sometimes towards the day of inbound they will offer me the flight I want (and ask me for change fee... but usually I'll pay it... anyway)
Just now I've just given up my HKG-NRT companion waiting... Waitlist for over 3 months... Waitlist deadline extended 3 times already.... Seeing the loading dropped from wide open (9999 for JCDI), from seat map only less than 10 seats occupied to I5, I4 or even C2... At this very last moment (waitlist deadline again, one week to flight day) still only willing to release 450 xTPE to NRT for me, and not willing to release any return sector seat to me.... Finally cancelled the redemption waitlist, also cancelled the revenue ticket, and turned to JL paid tickets... and at the same time keep seeing them giving out op-up continuously... Idiot revenue management... |
Would anyone be so kind to check CX738 DXB-HKG on 31 Dec? We got 2x J seats waitlisted as an upgrade from Y.

Maybe... They lost some cash revenue from my D fare ticket + accounting revenue from some miles v.s. maybe can take two more Y class revenue and offer op-up to them (they were selling L2 for the flight selling C2 at the same time, and selling Q5 for the flight selling I4)

I'm missing something. On a HKG-NRT flight, where can you upgrade to if your underlying fare is D?

I've got 2x confirmed redemptions in J going to LAX in early/mid Dec. I am hoping that they will release some F seats to SFO or LAX in the days before my flight, in which case I would change over to F redemptions (unlikely I know, but I can dream...). Previously I would have just checked the website each morning, but I recently discovered Waitlisting after not having used it for the last 8 years of redeeming Cathay seats. I've gone ahead and Waitlisted 2x F seats on flights to SFO and LAX for the day of my flight and also the next day flights which leave just after midnight. 4 waitlisted F redemptions of 2 seats each...
After I did the redeeming I wondered if this was bad form to clog up the Waitlist with these speculative bookings. Also, I haven't been asked to pay anything yet, so I assume they are "free" until the waitlist clears and they ask me to pay the taxes and fees. Am I wrong and will cancelling the waitlist redemptions cause me to get hit with cancellation fees? Please let me know! Thanks. |
I booked a paid PY trip on R class round trip with my company's travel supplier, then went on to the Asiamiles website to waitlist upgrade awards both ways. Also received email confirmation from AM regarding the waitlist request. However, I received a second email from the travel agency now indicating the outbound leg is on E class, with the return still on R.
Has anyone encountered this before? Will my waitlist request for outbound still hold and get processed if space frees up? |
Hello again! Can anyone help me to check F availably for both 881 and 883 on Dec 15 please?
I will be greatly appreciated. |

Has anyone encountered this before? Will my waitlist request for outbound still hold and get processed if space frees up? If inventory is released and you have priority on the waitlist, in theory you should get processed. In practice, since the June 22 revaluation, there's anecdotal stories here that award inventory has been reduced. I've never had success clearing the waitlist as an MPC GO for an upgrade from PEY to J flying to/from NYC (JFK or EWR) - HKG. Either I get confirmed at time of booking by my travel agent calling MPC or if there is availability on the day of departure, I use instant upgrade at the airport. My strategy has been to pick flights with high availability (i.e I9) for HKG bound flight and try to get confirmed. If I can't get confirmation on the return, ex-HKG, I try for instant upgrade at HKG either with the check-in agent or at the lounge. |
When I double checked this it looks like my tickets were issued twice (so 2 ticket numbers), but I clearly remember applying for the upgrade waitlist after the first one was issued. (Question: Is the AsiaMiles site smart enough anyway to disable waitlisting for a PY->J upgrade if it can tell that you are only on E fare?). On Manage My Booking the outbound sector already says E class.
I guess if this falls through, I'll also have Instant Upgrade to try at the airport. |

Yeah, I'll try that tomorrow to see what happened. At least I have reference to the older ticket that had R on both legs. I hope they are still able to up-fare me to R without change fees.
|
https://booking.qatarairways.com/nsp...eBooking.xhtml is also a very quick and dirty way to check fare class (now that Checkmytrip Amex https://classic.checkmytrip.com/plne...&SITE=XCMTXXNS and MyFlightsApp are permanently dead)

Can someone please help me check on the flight load of CX 288 FRA-HKG January 6 and how are the chances of it clearing? |

I am currently booked on 20/12/2018 CX527 NRT-HKG on PEY standard award for 4 people, and I was put on waitlist CX521 PEY on the same day for a later departure (The availability is shown as attached). Without any MPC members, anyone knows if I have any chance the waitlist would be cleared? Thanks! I figure my chances might have gotten better due to my wife needing to delay her flight. So now it's just 1 waitlist that needs to clear instead of 2. Edit: forgot to mention my waitlist will end Dec 13th at 8:00pm. Just wondering if there anything I can do to 'push' this along. |

The 1st one didn't clear and the latter 2 are still on waitlisting. Have tried searching F award flights again for these 2 flights and both award options are still for waitlisting only as usual. By now, only the J booking on 883 is confirmed. |

So I guess the buzzword doesn't work in english on the 3888 number. Have tried about 3 times already. Looks like some (I) tickets have freed up on my flight. I think this is the closest to the deadline I've been on any upgrades. Does the system tend to wait last minute before confirming or is it luck of the draw? |
