However, given that the BA Galleries lounge was jam packed, I guess it means quite a large percentage of BA's frequent flyers like the university canteen atmosphere and appreciate the quality of the food and appearance.

I agree - if flying from Terminal 3, I head straight for the CX F lounge.

I'm travelling in F to Vegas next month with my brother on a 2-4-1 from T3.
We have 2 friends travelling on the same flight but in WT+ (on a separate booking) am I right in understanding the rules that we can invite our friends into the F Lounge with us? (we have no status as such!). Also would guests apply for the Cathay or Qantas Lounges? Any issues with lounge hopping with all 4 of us?

There isn't a QF lounge atm, and although it is apparently near completion it is unlikely to open until at least November.

I had a peak into the QF lounge this morning. Some helpful FT insider has subtly peeled a bit of the plastic on the window hatch.
By what I've seen (which I guess is the reception/entrance point but even so) it is still a full on building site. Materials everywhere, first fix M&E still evident, suspended ceiling barely started.
On the assumption that this is at least partially representative, based on my experience this is at least 6-8 weeks out.
I'll wager a glass of champagne* that it won't be open before December.
*From any OW LHR lounge

If not Gold card, then I believe CX (only seen First lounge, and not at breakfast) then AA (hot buffet) then BA. Unless you like the bullet bacon rolls that BA thinks is a hot breakfast...
