2015 POUG rate tracker
Please add your own successful results to the follow list including the month/year when the POUG was offered to you.
POUGs are offered via BA.com and the App Manage My Booking via a distinctive banner. You cannot get a POUG by telephoning, however the service centres can complete a POUG which falls over mid transaction. They are offered on cash and Avios redemptions but typically not on complex routings, BA Holidays or travel agency bookings until OLCI stage. POUGs on Avios redemptions won't get you additional TPs/Avios, but they will on revenue tickets.

Short haul routes from LON to/from Europe
A price in pounds indicates a ticket issued from London, other currencies indicate prices for tickets issued overseas (e.g. singles or returns originating from CDG priced in Euros). Multiple prices indicate a range of fares are on offer. Note that LCY prices currently seem to be on a different basis to LGW and LHR (cheaper, in other words).

Am wondering what the justification is by BA for the circa 50-70% hike in the Y>>CE POUG pricing in the past few months. For example, my usual LHR-VIE and LHR-OSL sectors have always been £89 each way when available but are now up to £130 and LHR-AMS and LHR-BRU are now £120 each way, this is up from £69 previously.

Needless to say, I have completely stopped buying POUG as they are no longer value for money, particularly with the recent CE "enhancements" of extra legroom no longer being a differentiator.

So have taken 4 BA return flights since the pricing changes and have been deliberately peeking at the CE occupancy to see the effect. And I do notice a big difference - CE has never been more than 50% full on these 8 sectors. But before the POUG pricing changes CE was always 70% to 100% full I recall. Now I know that 8 sectors is not a conclusive sample and there may be many other reasons too - but they are my usual regular flights so it is at least a realistic observation.

To me as both a pax and IAG shareholder, it seems BA are leaving the proverbial "money on the table" now....they certainly are from me! I always did POUG at the previous £69 / £89 level on one sector of each flight, but have not bought a single one since these massive price changes. And they certainly are massive....and at a time when the CE differential is actually reducing too.

Any thoughts and speculation as to the BA strategy for this?

BA will be crunching numbers and analysing yields in the drive to get Short Haul close to making decent money. I would speculate that they have a pricing strategy that is working and more people are buying revenue.

The POUG for LHR-LCA was £99 for years until midway through last year.

I have a flight coming up soon and have been offered £210.

I'm currently in the exit seat which are the same seats as the ones upfront (on the 767 windows). I get lounge access and speedy boarding anyway.

BA is officially off its trolley.

There was a bit of discussion about this in last year's thread. What seems to have happened is that for LGW and LHR a policy decision has been made to ensure that HBO + POUG is not cheaper than the Saturday Night Club Europe return.

Here is the CWS POUG Estimation Methodology.

and here is a BA URL to help work it out.

It works in both directions, see last year's thread about buying singles to reduce the cost.

It's not failsafe, e.g. DUB, but it explains a lot of other cases. SOF, for example, has a lot cheaper than OTP, because OTP has a relatively expensive CE weekend cost for some reason (perhaps the weak competition).

Exactly my policy now since the POUG changes. I normally book my flights some 2-3 weeks out and always travel singly so I simply select a Y exit row seat at the time of booking. Never failed to get an exit row yet ^

I've probably said this in the previous thread, but it's not encouraging me to pay to upgrade.

I think we're being totally spoilt with these cheap TP runs at present.
When you're paying something like £1100 for 1200+ TP Vs. £250 for an extra 60TP in CE which could be a super new reduced legroom A320 seat, the justification just isn't there, for me at least.

I've got exit seats (or row 1 on domestics) booked on every upcoming domestic / ET flight so I'm fine there.

Sorry BA.......NOT a chance at these prices.
I'm seeing £105 each way. That's actually more than the additional fare would have been for CE when I purchased the ticket!

Supply and demand. Demand for short haul J has gone up sharply in the last few months and this has taken BA by surprise. (It was mentioned in the Capital Markets day.) This is likely more a function of the economy than any changes BA have made.

Regardless, the need to offer cheap upgrade options has softened.

While it's fine they've changed their methods (despite the fact they have done this while reducing what it pays for in CE at least). I think they should at least remove the "Limited special offer" text. Since, in most cases now I don't think there's anything special about the offer. In all the flights I have lined up the POUG "special" offer price is more than I would have paid at booking for the CE seat.

There's nothing special about it any more.

It's a shame, since I was happy to spend a bit of my own money to get CE out of work travel when there was a decent deal there. But now, there's really nothing in it for me.

For a booking in June, BCN is £130 to CE each way

"Stretch out and enjoy more legroom and a wider seat. Enjoy a traditional English afternoon tea."

Mmm, tempting! £130 for afternooon tea.

£170 LHR-FCO in March
No offer for FLR-LCY in March
No offer for LHR-BIO-LHR in March, although possibly because the route has yet to launch
No offer for LHR-TLS-LHR in April

Small sample size, but prices seem a lot higher than in the past.

I'm flying to AMS this weekend on a HBO ex LHR bought at the beginning of week. POUG has constantly been offered at £90, but has now dropped to £75 in the last few hours.

BA will spin it as "Consistent positive feedback regarding new short-haul cabin has permitted us to increase the upsell costs for our wonderful new cabin. Clearly demonstrating customer satisfaction."

Here's a good one for ya:

LHR-LIS:

Booked 8/10/14 for outbound 28/4/15

First offered POUG for £80, then a few weeks later £99, then £145, now down to £130.

The mind continues to boggle..
