Thank for the advice. Unfortunately registration was all locked up today (about 1100hrs) and a notice said it was closed until further notice - hummm.

That's not good news.

Doesn't bode well for T5. Has anyone seen the IRIS office at T3 open recently?

Not at Flight Connections but there's rarely a long queue there. This is only relevant for International to Domestic connections. Other connections don't have passport controls, though legally UKBA could introduce them for Domestic to International connections.

Before set all sorts of hares running it was a hand written note, so hardly 'official'. But we will see....

As noted earlier in this thread T3, MAN and LGW Sth registration offices are closed "until further notice".

The main champion of IRIS within UKBA sadly retired about 18 months ago and most of the support/clout for retaining the program has left the building together with him.

Excellent -- thanks. I need to make a change to my registration, so I'll try to plan a trip around the UKBA's rather precise (and shrinking) schedule

However, I do notice that page says the T5A office is open, which would be contradicted by the sign ColdWalker saw today...

They might have just taken the day off?
When I was there on Sunday, the guy behind me in the queue said it was his 3rd attempt, previous 2 times they had been closed.

Were they really going to have a long-term solution that involved both e-gates and IRIS? Surely the rollout of e-gates was the beginning of the end for IRIS, particularly if they offer non-EU paid access to e-gates.

That said, I'd prefer that they offer the e-gate/IRIS service only to citizens of countries which offer reciprocity. If the country makes EU citizens queue for a manual check, citizens of those countries shouldn't get e-gate access IMO.

In lieu of repeating what I've been saying on various threads for the last 3+ years, I'll just link you to some posts!

So the e-gates are replacing IRIS. As I said. Am I missing some kind of nuance or subtlety?

Not as far as I am aware, but the process will be bumpy.

The e-gates are an entirely separate program with a different target group and rationale than IRIS. e-gates are electronic clearance for anyone with an EU RFID passport. IRIS was essentially a trusted traveler program.

The long term solution will involve two programs. The e-gates which will utilise RFID technology and a second "premium program" that will use stored biometrics (as opposed to biometrics retrieved via RFID). The premium program's costs must be funded substantially (if not entirely) by the private sector and will require registration, but will be open to both EU and non-EU citizens.

Thanks for clarifying.
