You might also check some of the real off brands, such as Advantage, Payless, and since it is a colony of a European country, even Sixt. Check carrentals.com, autoslash.com, Orbitz, Priceline, and Kayak, and then you will really know where the cheapest deal is. Again though, your choices for full size or luxury suv's might be limited anyway.

You should get a decent deal eventually, but like mentioned above, your choices arent going to be big.

I tried this and a bunch of codes for a one-way SF to LA rental for a week. I can't find anything thats under $600 that doesn't have $0.38+ mileage charges. The best i've found was $209 +$0.38/mi with the citi leisure rate. Anyone have any luck on anything that includes mileage and isnt over $400 for the week?

The most important thing that you can do is divide your rental into two parts, with two different cars and two different rental agreements. The first part is your one way rate, because why pay a high daily one way rate when you are just driving around locally? The second part is your local rate, after you turn in the car you drove from SFO to LAX, and where you will have a much lower rate, with no mileage charges, for just driving around locally in the LAX area.

Have you tried A972200 for the one way rate?

Thanks for the helpful info. I never thought about doing a one way to la then rent locally. for this trip I'm going to be using the one way most of the time - stopping in Big sur and Santa Barbara for a 4 day trip + 2days in LA. That farmers code is pretty good - only $0.25/mile and now I've got that as a backup. The A113400 code is giving me the same deal, but unlimited miles. Anyone else use that code recently?

Avis South San Francisco to LAX, $362.96 including all taxes, unlimited miles, economy car, October 20 to 27.

Bookable via carrentals.com.

You're welcome.

P.S. The A113400 is only for State of Florida employees and apparently IS regularly checked - do you have proof that you are one?

I've been using this site for several years and finally I have something to contribute.

B908200 Seems to be affiliated with Jackson Travel. I haven't personally used it yet but seems to give decent rates.

Usirritated is right you should be able to get a better rate locally, and stay away from airports if possible, they have higher rates and charge you extra charges

try this AwD B021615 from Walmart, I got 311 for a week in oakland to LA,

Deal! The FatWallet code said it was Hawaii Bar Association. Should I file this under too good to be true? I also see that www.discounthawaiicarrental.com has same vehicle for about $20 more. They seem to be reputable from what I have found online. Anyone have any input on either of these codes? I have a confimred reservation with Enterprise for $225 for Intermediate and I like Enterprise due to allowance of spouse as driver for no fee, but thanks to FT I found Avis/Budget allow the same.

Also, due to length of rental the coupon MUAA046 would give me 1750 AA miles. Do they add the .75/day for this at the rental counter? I don't mind using this coupon instead of $ coupon as almost all $ coupons are not eligible in Hawaii.

Thanks for the code. I was able to use this and saved about $40 for my upcoming 3-day weekend rental in HNL.

Sharing my experience. A972200 (apparently Farmer's code) does NOT earn frequent flyer points. I was told by Avis upon enquiring for few of my rentals which did not accrue miles, that A972200 is for Zurich insurance, and they have blocked frequent flyer miles to be earned on rentals using that AWD.

Has anybody had an luck with Florida state employee code?

USirritated Aug 16, 2010 3:26 am

Lots of people have had luck with the Florida State Employees code, but a word to the wise, you'd best have either an employees ID, or at the very least, Florida residency and driver's license, because that is one code that is usually checked by ID verification!

Seems Hotwire can do $236.xx - any codes to make this cheaper with Avis (or others)?

Thanks,

What Avis codes have you already tried and how did the rates compare?

Have you tried autoslash.com? carrentals.com?

Tried all the codes in the last several pages & carrentals.com - all were more expensive (between $30 to $140 more).
Autoslash (which is new to me, thanks!) is $50 more expensive.

TIMTIM -
This appears to be a great AWD, but who's is it? I tried an employee code at MCO last year and couldn't get the rate on arrival - BIG HASSLE at the counter! Don't want that scene again.

I'm surprised A972200 was more than HotWire. Usually I have to go down one car class with HW in order to beat the price using A972200.

For anyone please note: A972200 gives you 750 driving miles with an additional 25 cents per mile over 750. Use for city rentals only. If you are going to take a long/med trip you might find a huge surcharge at the end.

Check out the codes from mile marker #1114 if you haven't already.

Edit: Also try A074800. I've used it many times without any problems. I believe it is a code for Citicorp Leisure Travel.

HW still wins - your last coded actually came close - except the HW price includes the taxes...

crhptic Aug 25, 2010 7:04 pm

Unless the city is very highly booked, I still find HW/PL can often beat the best discount code offering by a few bucks.

We're talking about the opaque HW/PL bookings, correct?

Yes. But you pre-pay with HW/PL opaque bookings and if your plans change... too bad. Also, you go to the line for the counter and can't take advantage of memberships like Budget FastBreak, Hertz #1 Gold, Avis Preferred, etc. Thirdly, I rarely get upgraded in car class with opaque bookings. And finally if you have a coupon code for some substantial miles or a free day this can not be applied to HW/PL bookings.

I usually look at the incremental difference in price and if it is only a few bucks ("few" is subjective I realize) and I have a good coupon code for x,xxx number of bonus miles I usually eat the extra money and enjoy skipping the long lines, the extra miles, and possible upgrade.

Procter Aug 25, 2010 9:34 pm

Beware of the A113400 (florida state employee) AWD!!! Just got back from our trip to Hawaii. Reserved 3 times at Oahu and Maui originally, at HNL site, the contract could not be printed out since the rate had some problem, and clerk had to ask for a supervisor/manager. Manager looked at it, and asked where i worked but luckily not the working ID. Eventually the manager had to manually straighten out everything for a 3-day rental. This sounded alarm for me and I had to do a last minute PL bidding for our maui rental. I also canceled our last HNL one-day rental with this awd, and used the Hawaiian airline code which gave the same rate. So be prepared.

A972200

Just tried out A972200 for my one way trip from Boston to NY...
Great deal (~50$/day) end of Sep 2010...

In one of the upper posts I have learned that 750 miles are included (add. miles 0,25$)

I was wondering if anybody already used that code for one way rentals and if any drop off fee will hit me and kill the deal!?!

Unfortunately there are no additional information available on the AVIS web page...

thx for your help!!!

Many of Avis's quoted rates for one ways do not have or include a drop off fee, because they simply build it into the higher daily rental rate for one ways. You PROBABLY will not have a problem, and that AWD is particularly known as a good one for one way rentals.

HOWEVER, I would recommend that you do one very simple thing to protect yourself.....call the rez line, give them your confirmation number, and ask them if there are any other charges besides what you have been quoted, specifically are there any drop fees? If they say that there are no other charges, specifically no drop fees, then ask for that information to be written into the comments section of the reservation, or for them to send you an e-mail reflecting that information. In that way, you will both know, and be protected. I do not believe that you will have any problems, but as always YMMV!

Check your confirmation very carefully. If there is a drop charge it will be listed there. If no drop charge is listed there then you may reasonably conclude there is no drop charge.

Now, check your confirmation very carefully, again, for one more item. In my experience this code offers 125 free miles per day. So it would include 750 free miles....if you are taking a 6 day rental. Make sure you have the mileage mapped out (Boston to NYC is ~200 miles assuming NO deviating or driving around for lunch on either end) and that you're renting the car for enough days to cover it. At 25 cents per mile this rate can turn into a bad deal if you are not careful!

True, which is why I won't book one of those until I am 100% sure of my plans.

I agree entirely. But there are also cases where the only half-decent rate is from a company where there's no preferred service (Dollar, Thrifty, Advantage, Enterprise, etc.), with whom I have no status so I won't get upgraded anyway, and where I have no coupons and there are no great promos for miles/points (or like Enterprise that don't even offer miles/points), and in those cases, saving an extra $10 or $20 using PL/HW can sometimes still be the best deal.

Just used A972200 for a one-day rental at LAX. Knocked 50% off the base rate, down to $32 / intermediate, but only 125 free miles; after that it's a quarter a mile. Fortunately I'm not driving far, but still, that's pretty stingy.

Tuneman1984 Aug 31, 2010 2:38 pm

A072200

I just typed that code in by accident, meaning instead to use A972200, and got very similar rates but with UNLIMITED mileage on the basic cars. I did a quick Google search which turned up nothing as far as what the code is for.

As for me, I used A972200 at a neighbourhood Toronto location without a hitch today. I managed to get a subcompact for $27.99/day (rack rate $46.80) and the 150 km per day didn't afect me as I was staying local with this car. I got the keys to a bug-splattered Accent hatchback with a shaky front end at highway speed. Got what I paid for I suppose. :D

I exchanged it at YYZ for an Elantra and again, no comment thus far.

I tried using the Farmer's code A972200 for a one way rental. Got a great rate quoted, but no free miles.

Has anyone had experience getting any amount of free miles on a one way rental? I need roughly 600 for my trip.

Please excuse this possibly stupid question, but how do you know that no free miles are included?

What dates and what one way city pair were you trying to book?

The confirmation page clearly states:

Mileage: No Miles Included
MILEAGE CHARGE: 0.25 USD per Mile

I'm planning on picking up EWR, and returning to a neighborhood location in Maryland. Total mikes over 5 days (9/3-9/8) is approx 500.

You might try G417900 (Kellsport/Kellwood Travel), B021615 (Walmart), A074800 (Citicorp Leisure Travel), A686200 (Priceline), all of these have been known from time to time to be helpful for one ways.

You might also try MUWA193, which is a coupon code (the above numbers are AWD numbers) that should be good for $25 off one way rentals (exp. 9/30/2010)

Good luck!

Does Avis actually charge for car seats? If you google the Avis coupon sites, I would guess that you will find a coupon for something so esoteric as a child car seat. For that matter, rez agents tend to be pretty helpful, if you ASK them specifically what kind of coupon you are looking for, they will tell you if there are any coupons valid during the time you want to rent for. They are willing to do this because the car rental business is so competitive, and they know there are coupons for other companies out there. However, you must call, and you must ask.

nacho Sep 4, 2010 7:59 am

Of course they charge for carseats, as a matter of fact they charge a hugh amount for carseats $9/day max. $50 per rental per seat. I know that because we needed 3 car seats for a 10 days rental at DFW. So we decided to fly our car seats over the Atlantic to save $150. I think Avis is trying to earn money on these items in order to bring down the net price so that they can match other car rental companies.

A "hugh" amount? "Hugh" is a name, such as "Hugh Grant," the actor. HUGE is the word for A LOT! :D

I stand corrected for asking such a stupid question as "Does Avis actually charge for car seats?" I was wrong, sorry.

Avis is trying to earn money for these items just like other companies are trying to earn money for these items. Avis is much cheaper on average than Hertz is, and a bit cheaper on average than National is, and Avis makes more coupons available than just about any rental car company out there, so if you do your research, Avis can also be cheaper on average than Thrifty, Dollar, Payless, Alamo, and others.

I'm a long time lurker on this forum but it's my first post here so please be gentle!

As a surprise for my other half I'm looking to rent a Chevrolet Camaro for a few days at the start of our wedding/honeymoon trip to California in a few weeks. I've booked rentals for other parts of our trip through avis.co.uk as I have an AWD number from my employer that gives a decent discount but the Camaro is only available for bookings through avis.com, and that site doesn't give any discount for my AWD. I'm looking for an alternative but not coming up with much, possibly because it's one of their "cool cars" or because I'm a UK resident rather than US?

Details of the rentals and AWD codes tried so far (none of which have any effect on the price) are as follows:

Location: Pick up & return from/to SFO
Dates: Sat 18 Sep 2010 @ 10am to Tue Sept @ 5pm (4 rental days)
Standard price with no AWD: 266.40 UKL (I assume that's £)
Includes LDW & ALI, unlimited mileage

Oddly I'm 99% sure I tried G417900 earlier today as it's saved in my previous Google search results (was trying to find a bit more info on using this code) and it came up cheaper but excluding LDW and with some other restrictions - now it doesn't seem to work for me at all, and when the price results come up I see that the reservation shows AWD N/A instead of a code. Am I doing something wrong here? Should I just give up on trying to get this any cheaper or is there anything else I could try?

Any help would be much appreciated.
