I usually rent hertz, they usually have the best prices for me, but for an upcoming trip Avis was a third the cost of hertz (really!) and I came over looking for discount codes.

I didn't know Amex offered the Premium Rental insurance, what a great find to see that. Having something reasonably priced for primary insurance is great. Thanks.

Bob, thanks for this, I just enrolled. Having lived in NY for sometime, I could never have AMEX cover car rentals but moving to MD and your post really helped^

My pleasure. Even though the code I use most often (G417900) has LDW included, I still buy the extra primary coverage from Amex on every rental. In my opinion, it's just too good a deal to pass up.

Can you point me towards where I sign up for this? I'm currently holding a Diner's Club card, at $95 per year, because it is primary insurance. Paying $19.95 per rental would be about break even for me.

New here, so I apologize if this is old info. Re: the Amex primary rental car coverage....Sign up for it with Amex, reserve the car from Avis with the Amex card. Rent the car. Upon return, if you haven't had an accident, use a different Credit Card to pay. You save the $19.95 fee! Yes??? Comments?

Well, I understand your point, and as a newbie, I sure want to be recognized as a member with valuable input. I have spent hours reading here today, and have come away with the feeling that many other things "ain't right" as you put it, but are commonly accepted here as OK... example, using a corporate ID from a company that you don't work for, so I felt this was a good tip I could add.

Please don't be too harsh, as I am only tryng to help others in the same spirit as I sense the others are.

thanks

It's actually been discussed quite a bit. I don't have time to cite the thread, but you can do a search for it.

I see a big difference in getting a discount on something versus using a service and not paying for it. Moreover, if you do the change thing enough, I would be very surprised if it didn't come back and bite you. How many times do you think you can get a pre-approval and then not use that approval before Amex catches on?

I didn't realize it had been discussed, I am at fault for not searching. Also, I agree with your point about the difference between getting a discount and not paying for a service you use.

I only rent a car about once a year for a vacation, so I doubt it would come back and bite me, but you made good points and I appreciate your insight. I guess thats why I asked for comments.

thanks!

Use Caution

I noticed while some of the AWD codes actually offer better rates than others, when shopping codes, be sure that you are comparing apples-to-apples. I have found that most of the codes that come up with very low rates, actually offer 0 free miles!! At the end of the day you might be stuck with a much higher bill.
This is especially true on one way rentals!

Tak May 5, 2008 1:43 am

When I try to use Code A972200(I guess for Farmers Insurance), it said your insurance are pre-determined based upon your corporate contract. Since this code is for Farmers Insurance employees/business associates, they could have some special insurance agreements.
If I have any kind of accident, this could be a problem later on.
Also my Avis preferred renter information and wizard number is not shown on the reservation so I have to go to the counter to check in ???

Anyone have any information what kind of contract they have?
I guess I shall not use this code.

Try K444404. For a 13 day rental of an intermediate vehicle (e.g., Laguna) in July from/to BRU, it beat my old standby D005295, and others, by a wide margin, as follows:

D005295 $607.60 AI
A074800 $640.10 AI
G417900 $640.10 AI
K444404 $394.62 AI

For all car rentals and lodging I check in with the AX and often change my card upon checkout/return.. not for the reason you state but b/c of the hold that they put on the cards.. this avoids this completely.. I do this so much that I don't think AX will catch on at all...

I think its a great idea and will try to remember to use that in the future as well

bob1008 May 11, 2008 4:32 am

It's stealing.

I agree with jcherney on this. There is a huge difference in maximizing a discount on a rental, and actually stealing the services that a company offers. In all the years of reading this board, this is the 1st time I remember a user actually advocating something so sleazy. Many states have a statute called "Theft of Services". I'm sure stealing insurance coverage would fall into this or some type of insurance fraud. The Amex coverage on this subject is a great value at $20 bucks. How can anyone justify stealing a lousy $20 from Amex when they have already honored their part of the contract, and taken responsibility for thousands of dollars of your potential damage?
Also, do you think Amex got so big by being stupid? You've signed up with them for insurance coverage that activates each time you use your card for an auto rental. Now you sign auto rentals with their card, and use a different card when the car is returned. You honestly think they won't catch on that your stealing their Premium Insurance Coverage? A simple phone call to the rental location will tell them what you did.

I believe the purpose of this board has always been to pass along discount and coupon information that is openly available to the public. It's dissapointing that a couple users have opted to step it up to the level of promoting the theft of a companies product. I'm confident that the majority of the users here have a higher level of ethics. Mine may not be the highest, but I don't steal.

I originaly asked this question, and thanks to all the input here, I'm taking the "high road", and NOT switching Credit Cards on my rental. I had spent many hours reading this forum with all it's great advice, and gotten caught up in "saving a few bucks." I totaly agree it "ain't worth it!" I have a $20,000 credit limit on my Amex card....I can't even believe that I was being so cheap and sleazy. I hope all here can forgive me and welcome me to the forum , as I intend to be a frequent reader, and sometimes poster when I have good value to add. Thanks all for helping me see my errors! (embarrassed)

VPescado May 13, 2008 12:55 pm

My two cents:

While I am not a lawyer, I am certain this does not rise to theft of services. AmEx provides a benefit (insurance) when their card is used to reserve, rent, and pay for a rental. If you use a different card at any of these three points in time AmEx does not provide the benefit. It is interesting that AmEx chooses to structure this arrangement so that the value of the insurance benefit can be determined before it is paid for - but that is how they chose to do it.

Further, I expect that AmEx is quite aware of the situation, and is fine with it as they expect most people will forget (or won't be bothered) to switch cards on the return, and are ultimately profiting on balance from the insurance program.

A similar situation occurs with the zero interest for a year balance transfer offers most of us get in the mail on a regular basis. The credit card companies assume that the customer will either:

1) fail to pay off the balance transfer before the year is up.
2) do something like make a late payment which removes the zero interest feature.
3) make purchases, which will accrue high interest, and which are not considered paid-off until the balance-transfer amount has been completely paid-off.

and therefore will reap some interest payments from the customer. And in most cases they are correct.

I used a chain of these offers to pay-off my student loans. I would get the new card with the balance transfer to my student loan company, put the card in a drawer, always pay the minimum balance on time - and always find another offer to transfer my balance to before the interest-free period was over.

Similarly in the days of being able to buy US savings bonds via credit card, I racked up a huge number of Delta miles (and some cash profit) by purchasing savings bonds on my DL Amex (getting double miles most of the times that I did it), and then transferring off to a zero interest card that would be paid off by cashing in the bonds immediately before the zero interest feature expired.

While I am sure the credit card companies would classify me as a freeloader, I have never encountered someone who would accuse me of stealing for doing what I did, and I think on balance the credit card companies ultimately made enough profit on such offers that they are willing to continue the practice in spite of people like me.

In short and in my opinion, the credit card switch to get AmEx insurance but paying only when you need it is (like the use of zero-interest balance transfers) a loophole and is neither illegal nor immoral. But it is a bit of a hassle, and some people may find it tacky.

If amex really was concerned about it, they would attach the $20 fee when the authorization is made and not at the end of the rental.

spartacus May 13, 2008 8:52 pm

I Thought This Was The Sticky For Avis Coupon Codes

This discussion about AMEX coverage is nice but does it belong here? Start another thread so those of us looking for new coupon codes don't have to muddle through it all. Thank you.

VPescado, you make a persuasive arguement, and perhaps you may be right.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Everyone is entitled to their own set of ethics and moral guidelines.

JB, welcome to the board. There are no bad guys here, just different opinions, but there all welcome.

lhmpdx May 14, 2008 7:20 am

Isn't it odd that this AMEX issue is such a big one here, when much of the board consists of helping people to use discount codes (Netjets, etc.) for which they are not eligible?

We were asked to produce ID when we picked up our car at Zurich city office - the manager would not let it go without ID as it showed in his system as being 40% discount. In fact, the clerk caught it and called the manager's attention. The manager was extremely polite but also very firm about not giving the discount. He also hinted about people getting codes from internet site and Avis would do audit on unusually high discount - at the end would bill the full rate even after rental...

At the end we switched to a United Airlines code which offered only 15% discount and $100 higher, but was risk-free. The manager was happy also as we had United FF number in the original reservation, so that satisfied him.

Just processed 131 codes for Avis, found at various points in this entire thread (admittedly, I didn't collect all of the codes...who *really* wants to wade thru 80 pages?).

Parameters
Site: www.avis.ca (I'm from Canada)
Rental Location: Calgary
Start Rental Date: 23-Jul-08 09:00AM
End Rental Date: 28-Jul-08 09:00AM
Total: 5 days
Car Type: Premium 4-door
Mileage: Unlimited kilometers
Extra Accessories (GPS/Satellite radio/etc): none
Additional:
  • Loss Damage Waiver - none
  • Personal Accident Insurance - none
  • Personal Effects Protection - none
  • Additional Liability Insurance - none

Here are the results. The "Description" for each code is from the descriptions given in the post it was retrieved from (if there is no description, there was no useful description). Please feel free to make comments/corrrections on codes and descriptions where necessary (ie: Avis employee code, this code is taboo, need ID for this code, etc).

Seems to be the first case that K444404 raised flags. I used it in Germany several times at major airport stations and was never asked to provide ID although the contract always showed a 40% discount. CDW, airport fees and unlimited mileage always included.

Question about one of the discount codes listed above.

I'm doing some price investigations for a trip back to Pennsylvania for Christmas this year, and I found this code through Google and this site:

K199060..........Great FL Rates - from major Florida tourism organization - anyone can use..........398.20 CAD
Now, I live in Florida, and am just taking a trip back to PA for a week. Does anyone know if this code is limited only to travel in Florida, or is it really usable for anyone? Has anyone used it and been successful? Was there an ID check required, or any questions asked?

I plugged the code into Avis's online reservation, and it came up with a spectacular rate for a 5 day compact rental of $160.00 USD. I'd love to use this code, and I just want to make sure there won't be any issues if I do.

Any help would be appreciated.

More on Farmers Code...

I went into my profile and changed the code to that of Farmers. No issues. However, I learned when I called to get my Wizard number on the reservation that the code by corporate policy does not allow one to collect FF Miles as part of the rental. Not a big deal but a surprise. They then added my Wizard number and now I should be able to zip through.

Also, I buy the LDW (was cheaper throught the Farmers code trhat to use the one with Free LDW) because I have already been down the road of having to see a co-worker use their personal auto insurance to cover an accident on company time. My company doesn't do the corporate AMEX plan for the insurance and I am not going to carry them for it.

If I have any kind of accident, this could be a problem later on.
Also my Avis preferred renter information and wizard number is not shown on the reservation so I have to go to the counter to check in ???

Anyone have any information what kind of contract they have?
I guess I shall not use this code.

I did a rental using a code that wasn't good for a one way rental.

The SA put in another AWD that matched my rate-$44 for mid-size one day rental (we do one way rentals to LAX instead of bothering friends for rides).

AWD: A7895000

I googled it, but can't find any information on it, but that is what's in my R/A.

Hope someone else can use it.

Have you google "AWD Australia"? I just found several AWDs doing so.

Need best code for one way from Seattle to Whistler BC

I'm trying to find the best rate for a one way rental from Seattle airport to Whistler British Columbia. I would prefer unlimited mileage. I will also return with a one way from Whistler back to Seattle. We don't need the car while we are in Whistler. Any suggestions for best one way codes?

Thanks,
rob

Information on following AWD codes?

Hi, I'm new here and I'm traveling to Italy in a week. I'm renting a car for a couple of days and I found that these codes give me the best rates. Does anybody know whose corporate codes these are?

N711304
E034803
E034800
E027237
E034815

I called the customer service line and the person I spoke to said that he couldn't tell whose codes they were on his side. Any help would be appreciated. I want to be sure it's ok to use the codes listed above.

Thanks,
clewless

Hi Clewless, Welcome to Flyertalk,

I would strongly suggest that you DON'T call Customer Services with questions like this. Not sure if they can but they may flag your account as trying to use codes you are not permitted to use. If you are allowed to use a code for work reasons etc then you would know what it is and not need to ask.

Just take a look at this thread and try the various codes on here that have been proven to work. Or even try googling the codes.

Seasoned Flyertalkers know that when it comes to getting discounts with cars/hotels or airfares you really don't want to call the company and draw attention to yourself.

Happy renting, Rich

Thanks for the welcome and heads up Aerotec. Fortunately, I didn't disclose any of my information and stated I was just trying to get some info. I've been trying to find information on the codes I found for a couple weeks now. Google only points me to this forum and I can't seem to find any description on the codes. I was just trying to see if someone knew of them off hand since I see a lot of experienced travelers here.

My pleasure. Even though the code I use most often (G417900) has LDW included, I still buy the extra primary coverage from Amex on every rental. In my opinion, it's just too good a deal to pass up.

Does the Amex Premium Car Rental Protection protect you even if you HAVE NOT declined car rental company's CDW (i.e. when you buy rental company LDW as well, as you have indicated?). I know that the normal AMEX CDW protection specifically requires you to DECLINE LDW from the car rental company, otherwise it will not come into effect.

AWD Codes for LAX

Hi all,

By holding a valid IATA ID Card, what benefits would one receive from car rental firms?

brian113 Jun 9, 2008 2:05 pm

Is this 50 % rate going to raise red flags on Grand Cayman?

I tried a handful of codes and got the following rates for a 6-day rental of an intermediate on Grand Cayman:

No code, plus a few codes that were useless: $269.94 USD

D005297: $242.95 USD

Then I get this ... K444404: $134.97 USD

Will that rate send up a red flag to the clerk at the desk?
