so, trying to book a car in FL for the holidays, fairly long rental, 12/20-1/7. I could pickup from PBI, FLL, or MIA.
NOTHING seems to move the prices. I have never seen that. Try to book a car for 12/23-12/28, for five days, 500$, apply a code, 500$, try the ASAP, 500$, try another code, 500$. same thing, any code, any airport. CRAZY. what does that mean? |
Very weird experience with the Citi Travel Code A074800
This is very weird - that the rate showed as the current rate, not the rate at reservation - Before everyone says the rate reverts to full rack rate, it is not - it is still a discounted rate. That is why it is so strange.
We reserved a Corolla (was classified an Intermediate at SJU... what a joke.) for a weekly rental 11/07-13 back on July 30, with base rate at $185 before tax and fee. The week before our departure, I looked up the rate again. The new rate was at $240 under same discount code. I pulled up our reservation, as expected, it still showed the same $185 rate. I printed a fresh copy of the reservation bearing the date of 11/07 (after midnight) just in case. At SJU rental counter, the agent ignored our confirmation printout and insisted us to hand her the driver license and credit card. We had some difficulty communicating with the agent as she spoke very little English. So instead of verifying the rate first, we handed her the CC and driver license. When she handed the contract to us to sign, we noticed the base weekly rate shown was $240, the same as the current rate, NOT the rate on our reservation. Trying to explain to her was a frutile exercise. She finally called the pickup location to connect to the Manager. The manager also insisted the computer showed a rate of $240 and claimed they could not modify price. He said we needed to go over to the pickup location for him to actually look at the reservation printout then determine what to do with it. We felt this was an unacceptable explanation, especially the reservation was printed freshly again on 11/07 in the early morning hour, still showing the rate of $185 made on July 30. This is the First Time we ever encounter ANY rental car company showing a rate that is way above what is shown on the reservation. On top of that, the $240 is supposedly an already discounted rate - with the regular rate in the $300 range. We actually have 2 backup reservations - one from Budget, and one from National - both are about the same rate, except for a smaller car - Chevy Cobalt, instead of Corolla. We decided not to go with Budget as it is the same company as Avis and they share the same counter, literally. The National reservation was made only 2 days ago when it lowered its rate a lot, even with the Triple UA miles offer code. We decided just go with National, its counter was accross from Avis on the other side of the hall. For some reason, National at SJU was unable to locate hubby's Emerald number but did show the correct rate as on our confirmation. We never sign the Avis contract. However, our credit card has been swiped so now it has a $295 authorization from Avis. With Citi, it probably will take 30 days before it finally drops off. Lesson learned, ALWAYS ALWAYS verify rate first, before handing out Credit Card to the rental car agent! This kind of practice of the rental car companies literally encourage double- triple- reservations if they could change rate on existing reservations. One final note is, whenever we rented cars with Budget or Avis, in US/Canada, we always received a reminder of the rental about 48 hours before the rental. We never receive any reminder from either company on the rentals at SJU. |
You Are (Almost) Right

New to Avis...question abt. AWD in Florida
Hi, i am looking at Avis for a 1 wk rental -lowest possible rate, 12/23-30...
The best I've found is a Florida State AWD (state employee?) - THe Wizard registration accepted and reserved this and i am a preferred-wizard member. Anyone with experience using this FLA code and is the Wizard program similar to National's Emerald Club, ie., can you just go straight past counter check-in and present your printout of the online reservation? Any ID needed? Thanks for any advice or otherwise, other suggestions of codes if this one may be problematic at check-in time: ) Much appreciated Shep. |
I have never used this AWD, but it seems like from this, you have to have a state issued CC to rent:
http://dms.myflorida.com/business_op...ntract_summary 7. Methods of Payment To insure that state rates are received, the following methods of payment for vehicle rentals are required under this contract: 1. State issued Diner's Club, Master Card, Visa, American Express credit cards or State of Florida Purchasing “P” Card Note: Payment via Purchasing Card for renters other than cardholder will be accepted with prior arrangements made through Avis Representatives listed in Section 19. 2. Avis Central Billing Credit Cards and Note: To obtain Avis Central Billing Credit Cards contact your Finance and Accounting office or one the Avis Account Representatives listed in Section 19. 3. Avis Company Travel Order (ACTO) provided by Avis Rent-A-Car Note: To obtain Avis Company Travel Order (ACTO) contact your Finance and Accounting office or one the Avis Account Representatives listed in Section 19. 4. Purchase Order use with Direct Billing (pre-approval required) Note: Purchase Orders will be accepted if pre-approved through one of the Account Representatives listed in Section 19. Purchase Orders are not accepted without prior arrangements with Avis Rent-A-Car. Avis will not accept renter’s debit or check card at beginning of rental but will accept debit or check card to pay for rental when vehicle is returned. See Section 14 for applicable taxes. Prior to entering into credit card agreements, state agencies must obtain approval from the Department of Banking and Finance, Bureau of Auditing.

hmmm.
thanks for that info ghurty,
Looks like i should be considering other options then! Any particular suggestion on a better alternative lately? Last year I had no prob. with National but the same CID this year (Carlson i believe) is way higher than i expected. At this point though, I'm looking at National again since the Emerald Experience was great, and at least I've dealt with em before (haven't ever done anything through Avis). The Avis rate was going to be around 208 for 7 days.... As of right now, using National with a new CID and a coupon, i've got a deal for abt. 238 incl. tax. I'm starting to think that's as good as im going to find at this point. However, if anyone cares to share any new Avis AWDs that work feel free to PM or post! Thanks again, Mike |

For the discount code for Avis employees, can I still use it even though I am not an employee? Will they ask for any form of ID to prove I work for Avis?
|
Have you read any of this thread?!
There are numerous posts such as this one with regard to why NOT to use the Avis Employee code.

Try NetJets' K444404-code ... it saves about 50% !
This one knocked a five-day intermediate at PWM from $265 down to $200. Not 50%, but a very welcome 20% or so... thanks. I note also that on this code you do not get unlimited miles -- I got 500 free miles, then the 501st+ are 28 cents / mile. |
New AWD Code
Hey guys try this code Z001181. Should get you a good deal at local locations, especially Florida and you won't have any trouble using it.
|
this last code didn't do anything for me in FL Z001181
|
It did for me, also tried with TPA airport and get 14.69 rate on subcompact but I hardly ever rent from airports
|
Used L149332 last week for four one way rentals. Booked premium for all four rentals and was upgraded to Lincoln Town Car three times:
1. Hicksville, NY (Nassau County, Long Island) to JFK: $53 + tax per day. 2. RDU to Winston Salem, NC: $45 + tax per day (upgraded to Lincoln TC) 3. GSO to RDU (NC); $45 + tax per day (upraded to Lincoln TC) 4. JFK to Hicksville, NY: $58 per day + tax (received Lincoln Town Car Good to see that it still works. PS: I had also used it for a one way back in May from San Jose to Sacramento. Was $53 + tax for a premium. |
Don't know if this code has been reported before, but this is from an ad on page 7 of this month's Costco magazine:
$25 off a weekly rental Rent an Avis luxury car, convertible, sports car, SUV, minivan, passenger van, or specialty car for a minimum of 5 consecutive days and you can receive $25 off your rental. Include your Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) #A108300 and Coupon # MUGH010 in your reservation. Clip this coupon and present it at the Avis counter upon arrival. Please be prepared to show your Costco membership when picking up your rental car. Rental must begin by 3/31/08. |
One way rental in Chicago on Avis
I will be heading out of Chicago-Midway for the holidays. Instead of paying the long-term parking, we are renting one way in and out of Midway from one of the NW Suburbs.
My rental TO Midway is $24 OTD for a a 24 hour weekend rental which of about the best I would expect. The rental FROM Midway is $58 for a January 1st rental. Are there any codes that will apply to OW rentals? |

Good news is that Z001181 and L149332 also cut more than half off the rates I am getting anywhere else. A few bucks more per day than NetJets, but unlimited miles. Anyone know where either of these came from? |
Italy - Avis Code
I have a family of six spending the Christmas week in Rome. I was hoping someone may have a Avis Code that could be used in Italy for an upgrade or discount. Thanks for your interest.

The Netjets code is pretty good. However, sometimes going to another avis site is better. I used it to run a quote on a Mazda 3 at TLV on avis.com. It came out to $470. I tried avis.co.il for the same car at the same time, and I got a quote of $400. Without any discounts on avis.com, I got $600 and change. So, sometimes trying a different avis.co.** site could be better.
|
By the way, just ran another quote using Sixt USA. I looked at their rates, and they KILL anything that anyone else has. A Mazda 6 for $365 while I am there beats the others completely!

I would just like to clarify regarding the AVIS AWD code G298100, after further research, it appears that it does not offer LDW, but it does waive the underage fee (upto 18) it also has some pretty good contract rates: Especially EWR and JFk ($54/$62) No ID needed. Also the coupons in the above post work for this code as well.

Is there a good code for local rentals on the East Coast? I'm thinking New Haven train station (HV1)...
All of the codes listed in the previous five pages raise the price. I'd love a 4wd since I'm planning on going to Vermont, but I'll have to settle for a compact if I can't get a good code. :( |

Try L093590. Suv's are generally pretty expensive, but if you book a full size, you can almost always get upgraded if available. I'm finding that since the increase in gas prices, fewer people are willing to take the gas guzzlers and the rental companies are much more generous in offering them.

Do i need to put Australia as my Residence? or can i give them a Canadian address? I have a USA visa and address. Also is there any way to waive the one way drop off fee? Cheers |

Thanks for the help - quick question - I am picking up from London Heathrow .... will the "gevoha" code require any kind of identification? Thanks

Hi,
I just want to let everyone know that I created a post that contains a listing of all the corporate accounts and coupons nicely laid out, it also contains a price matrix for a one day rental, it can be found here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=766645 |
Matrix= very flawed cheat sheet. Do your own research.

Hi,
I just want to let everyone know that I created a post that contains a listing of all the corporate accounts and coupons nicely laid out, it also contains a price matrix for a one day rental, it can be found here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=766645 a) I tried several of the good awd's that you left off the list for some reason, and 3 gave as good or better than your top 5, for the locations you posted. b) I did not see where you posted what size vehicle these rates are for, so it leaves us up in the air a bit. I also cannot think of 2 worse locations to use as your benchmark than JFK & LAX, 2 notoriously horrible rental locations in terms of discounts. c) This forum I believe is to post our experiences and advise of helpful tips. Users are supposed to still do their own research and search for what works best for them. The formal manner in which you presented a matrix with "top five", "groupings", coupons with advisories that they can be used with certain awd's, etc., I believe will be very detrimental to people that rely on it, and to this forum, as many people will now feel that there is no need to contribute, when they can just check the matrix. When in fact the matrix is really just one person's unqualified opinion, even if it is masked in a professional looking presentation. d) In todays litigious society, I'm amazed that anyone would author and publish on the internet such a formal "walk-through" sheet of codes to circumvent policies such as underage renting, obtaining government discounts, etc. Think about this.... 3 underage kids rent a car at JFK using your recommendation (and the formality of it clearly presents the list as your recommendation). They get drunk, hit and kill someone. How unpleasant do you think it will be for you if it is disclosed that they obtained the vehicle from the directions on your "matrix cheat sheet"? Unlikely to happen? sure. But very possible? I think so. As I said in the beginning, I think your intentions are good, but really misdirected. There is a huge difference between the casual banter of the experiences of our forum users, and the publishing of a very formal looking "how to" list that you posted. The fact that it is not very accurate is probably the least of my concerns. In any case...this is an open forum and I believe you are entitled to post anything that the moderators will accept. Since I personally gather a tremendous amount of helpful information from this active thread, I felt I should express my opinion on your attempt to direct the users to your published matrix cheat sheet.:td: |
