leisure rates

I tried using a whole bunch of codes in Israel and it keeps saying I'm renting a leisure rate and the code doesn't apply. Any ideas?

Booked using code, was about 3% cheaper, but I"ll take it...thanks again. I use USA as residence. I am satisified with a straight up deal.

Just came back from a week renting in NZ. All Majors wanted $NZ600 week ats it was around Xmas. found a local crowd at airport who did it for half that rate all up.

Israel's tough, because the vast majority of the cost is in the mandatory insurance and taxes--not the actual rental fees. If you must rent from Avis, look for links from haaretz.com or elal.co.il for slightly lower rates than avis.com (and remember that avis.com may not fully indicate which insurance is actually mandatory). Hertz will sometimes knock off 10% for AAA members, but it can be tough to get it to work.

Help on Renting in South Africa

I'm looking to rent for 2-3 weeks in SA. I've tried using codes D086532 and D752500. Neither of those changed the price, got an (L) which said my intial rate was a leisure rate and was the lowest. The best price so far is $613+ B class for 21 days.
Does anyone know of a code or coupon that might bring the price down?
Or a better deal with another company?
Thanks

nldogbert Jan 7, 2005 4:58 am

hi!

I used the D086533 code in SA recently, and noticed that the discount was only 10%. What I noticed is that sometimes on the local SA Avis site, you can have better deals/promotion. Did not realise that until my trip :( .

Also, you might want to check out Hertz. They might have better rates. The other company to check out is Imperial Car Rental, it is a local South African rental company, but a big organisation. I heard that they do have some really good rates.. but if you want to earn airline or whatever miles/points, this company is only affliated with the SAA Voyager FFP (to my knowledge).

Hi,

I am new to this board. I just tried the A113400 State of FL employee rate. This is giving me an incredible rate to rent in Texas for three days with a one-way. I had two questions for you guys. First, do I have to have an ID to use this code. Also, I see that the reservation says that 'no miles included' and .30 USD per mile for additional miles. Is this true? If I have to pay .30 a mile then this deal is not that great. Thanks for the help.

JJ

aussieinsf Jan 16, 2005 2:17 am

I'd believe them when they say they'll charge you 0.30 per mile....
I had this same debate on a one way rental Appleton, WI to Milwaukee, WI - I went with the higher rate but unlimited mileage.

MoreMiles! Jan 17, 2005 2:53 am

Re rental in Israel - Avis offers very significant discounts for rentals of 21 days or longer, often 50% or more. Short-term rentals are a real issue in Israel...

Agreed. D005297 gives me a rate $200 less than what my frequent flyer codes give me, but I need to know what ID I would need to show when I pick up the car at MSP.

Yes, it's safe to use. No you don't need any ID. Lots of people, including me, use it. I can assure you that you would hear about it pretty quick if there were any problems with the code.

Need a 3 Day Rental in Germany in March and D005297 gives me a Golf for 89ukp Buy Now or 56ukp if Pay Later.

Why is the Buy Now so much more! Strange!

Anyway thanks for the code. The BA Exec Club rate for the same was 78ukp :p

Just a thought, are the inclusions trhe same in each qute? I mean the various surcharges e.g. airport, insurance, theft protection, unlimited mileage?

If so, it's a no-brainer! And I find the BA rate is always, always, always more expensive - got to pay for those miles bonuses somehow - 2,250 for a Gold last time, I'm usually happier paying a lower rate and getting 1,000 Virgin miles.

weekend codes ok with compact cars?

hi - does anyone know if these codes work with compact 2-doors or only intermediate to full size?

Also, anybody know how reliable reserving a 2-door vs a 4-door is? I really need a 2-door car.

Thanks,
Lisa

I have contacted Avis and provided them with the underage fee waiver code above, and they did confirm that code lowers the age to 18. Is this legal to use? The lady said it was a corporate code. I do not want to have any problems if someone crashes into my rental or anything. What do you guys think?

Discount codes are one thing, but using a code to lower the rental age - I would be uneasy about that.

If Avis claimed you fraudulently used a discount code that you were not entitled to (which I have never heard of them doing), then they could charge you the full rate for the rental (which you would have paid anyway if you had not used the discount code) so it's no big deal.

But if you had a crash while using the under age rental AWD, and they ruled that you weren't entitled to use that code, they could charge you for the damage done and this could be substantial.

Also remember that there may be an agreement between Avis and the company which owns the AWD code such that the comany underwrites the extra insurance risk for their own employees and would foot a certain amount of the bill if one of their under 25s crashed a car.

And you can bet your bottom dollar that they will investigate any crash where an 18 year old totals one of their vehicles.

ASAP code

I just want to thank everybody who posts codes for general use. Last May and June I used the ASAP code for a 9 day rental in France and got a great rate (about $305 for a nice little Opel including two additional drivers). After I entered the code on the reservation site, nobody ever asked me about it. That was the first car I have rented in years and it was a very good experience, thanks in part to this thread. Of several codes that I tried, ASAP was the best, and from what I read here it helps a good cause.

A search reveals that code B999000 is thought to be the AVIS employee rate. In the thread, it is recommended not to use this code as past attempts have been met with problems.

I agree. I don't recall a single person that ever said that he was able to get the B999 or the employee code rates. There have been many, many, who posted they were turned away at the gate because they did not have the proper authorization letter from their Avis manager. Stick to any of the other codes. They all give a pretty good discount without hassle. My favorite is still L093590 for rentals in the U.S.

I may be that single person . Last year, when renting in St. Looie I gave the agent what I call the "B999" speech. In short, as whe was pulling up my rez I casually asked had my travel manager put my AWD number in my reservation. The agent replied, no. I then pulled out what looked like a well organized manifest and spoke confidently, "Ah, here it is...B999000". She took to typing it in and got the last steps and the reservation wouldn't finalize (I don't actually know what she was looking at on her screen). She mentioned that somehow, the code was "accepted" but the transaction wouldn't close. She called for the shift manager who tried it a couple of times to no avail. Then, the beauty of an empowered manager came through. She manually adjusted the price ($25), stated my thanks for her diligence and I went away quite happy as you can imagine.

I haven't tried it since - the only reason why I resorted to it then was that the full size rate (which I had to rent) was going for a ridiculous $80 or so dollars. Might get brave enough again on my upcoming excursion to Sydney.

You are my kinda guy. I wouldn't have had the stones to try that one. What you said is exactly what happens.. it lets you make the entire reservation with the 999 code, but will not close, and will not finalize. We've heard the same story over and over again. You got lucky in that some manager overode the system based on the quoted price. Let us know if you pull that one off again. Good job !

Just booked to pick up in Germany. D005297 gave me a great discount for a 21 day rental with unlimited mileage - but I have a few questions as I've never rented in Europe before:

1. I'm Canadian and the Avis site quoted the price in Canadian dollars. Will the contract at pick-up convert that rate to Euros or will the rate read as Canadian?

2. I waived all coverage as I'm covered by my credit card and a rental policy I have on my own car insurance. It covers liability, theft, collision, etc. I'm planning to take the car into Italy. Will they force me to buy any insurance even if I tell them I'm covered? I've heard of this happening in some places in Europe, but I'm not sure if it's true.

3. The base rate is $670 CAD and it mentions tax of $134 CAD, but then gives me an estimated total of $970 without itemizing the additional charges. Any ideas as to what the extra $166 is for?

4. How important is getting an Int'l Drivers Permit for non-EU residents when driving in Italy?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out here.

1. I did a Euro rental recently and they converted the charge from Euros into GBP and charged me in GBP. The irritating thing is that they add a rip off 4% commission for the privilege. Insist that they charge you in Euros and let your credit card company do the conversion for you (they will charge less commission).

2. There used to be restrictions/extra insurance if you take a car to Italy (when you see how they drive, you will understand) but I can't recall having any problems last time I rented there. Certain cars top end cars (Porsche, Merc and BMW) probably do still have restrictions, so check in advance if you want one of these.

Third party insurance is a legal requirement in Europe and I think you will find that it is included in the price and can't be declined, regardless of what cover you have. You can probably use your card to cover the additional insurances.

3. Could be airport fee, car registration fee, sales tax... They always seem to invent a bunch of hidden charges to lump on to the poor renter.

4. Int'l Drivers Permit? You will probably be OK, but the best thing to do is ask Avis or your local motoring organisation (who will doubtless try and sell you an international driving permit!).
