Personal Platinum

I was offered 30K MR points with no spend via chat and call after my first AF posted last week for AMEX Personal Platinum (opened Dec 2019). Should I take it or maybe wait/ask again?

Retention offers are not an additional reward for past spending. An algorithm predicts the probability that you will close the account, and estimates the minimum offer that will keep you as a customer. American Express seldom makes offers if there is a regular pattern of high spending, because this indicates a higher level of cardholder engagement and satisfaction. By their nature algorithms are not precisely correct in individual cases.

Also remember that once you receive a retention offer you are ineligible for the next 12 months - that's policy, not an algorithm.

So can you get a retention offer two years in a row? How?

You can receive retention bonuses in consecutive calendar years, but must wait 13 months. Scroll back to post 1421 and read forward,

Amex Bus Plat, No Retention offer.

Have had this card multiple years and was able to get very minimal retention offers in past years (5-10K MR). The benefits outweigh the cost (just Amex Offers cash back more than pay for the Annual Fee). But it is frustrating that others received a $200 gift in 2020 and nothing will be offered in 2021.

I noticed in the asksebby community posts for Amex Platinum card retention offers that in December were mostly 50K, but for January it was mostly 30K.
Could retention just be offered based on the month and changes each month? Shall I wait for February if my AF posted in January?

Biz Plat card 1st year AF. Not much spend. Offered via chat $300 loyalty statement credit. Asked if they had any offer with cash plus MR. No dice. Agent only saw offer of 5k MR points LOL or $300. I accepted cash.

They rolled out the Paypal credit in January so that likely plays a part in the retention offers trending lower.

You have to realize even without travel, they are basically throwing money at people between the Home Depot / Best Buy offers ($200 total), Saks ($100 total), Uber/Eats ($200), and Paypal ($180). Combined, those equal $680, well above the annual fee even if you don't want to value them all at face value. So it stands to reason we won't see as many amazing retention offers now.

Personal Green: due for AF in a couple weeks. No retention offers for now, but found 2 targeted upgrade offers instead:
1) to Gold -- with 15K MR after spending $1K/3mo
2) to Plat -- with 25K MR after spending $2K/3mo
Went with (1), as there are currently none of those in my household.
