Booking an extra seat on for POS (Persons Of Size) or other reasons
American Airlines sells adjacent seats for various reasons; the most common one is for persons of size who can't comfortably occupy a single "Main Cabin" (Economy) seat, though others might consider purchasing an extra seat for comfort or to protect items of exceptionally high value. This seat was referred to by AA as "XTRASEAT" or “EXST”, and this JOHN BROWN
EXST BROWN
is how it will reflect in some documentation. There is no discount for the second seat, which must be purchased in advance; walk up purchases of extra seats will incur full "walk up" fares, if available.

As these can not be booked online, calling will work best; no telephone service charge will be made.

The extra seat does not earn Elite Qualifying or Redeemable miles or earn extra baggage allowances, etc. EQ instruments can only be earned by the individual person occupying a seat on AA (not an empty seat, a "proxy passenger" or animal or inanimate object). In the example above, EXST BROWN will have no AAdvantage earnings.

Extra space during travel Link

For the safety and comfort of all customers, if a customer’s body extends more than 1 inch beyond the outermost edge of the armrest and a seat belt extension is needed, another seat is required. We encourage customers to address all seating needs when booking.
  • When you call to book, Reservations will make sure you get 2 adjacent seats at the same rate.
  • If you didn’t book an extra seat in advance, ask an airport agent to find out if 2 adjacent seats are available.
  • You may be offered a seat in a higher class of service that may provide more space; in this case, you’ll be responsible for the fare difference.
  • If accommodations can’t be made on your original flight, you can buy seats on a different flight at the same price as your original seats.

Other reasons for purchasing extra seats would be for allowed musical instruments, objects of high value such as art works, or materials for human transplantation.

A few wondering questions:

Can you get a fare that is posted on aa.com when calling AA (obvisiously, if you are not EXP you are going to pay the TA fee)? And for example, lets say you have a cheap JFK/LAX fare and want to buy a second seat (fare) to have a row to yourself for comfort. Will AA still allow you to buy a second seat and block that seat or must you need the additional space only because of you cannot fit into a single seat.

AA has no problem with you buying two seats for whatever reason you like. (Michael Jackson once purchased the entire F cabin to NRT for himself as reported on FT) As for buying it on the web, you can always buy two seats on-line by using a dummy name for the extra seat, then placing the reservation on hold. After that call reservations, tell them you want the dummy name changed to an extra seat and then purchase it online. But the name change must be done prior to purchase. Having said that, there was a recent thread stating that once an agent touches an online reservation, it is no longer purchasable online -- if true, that certainly would expose a non-EXP to the phone ticketing fee.

I've merged your query into the active thread; some members have already posted valuable information and experiences for your benefit.

Sometimes, it seems difficult or tricky to search - in this instance, one might enclose the term "extra" (or "seat") in quotation marks, or risk getting a reply that states the term is to brief or common to reveal threads. And, sometimes, it doesn't - it seems a bit inconsistent. But to be sure, use the quotes on short or common terms.

How does mileage work for this too?

I've only found the quote marks necessary on terms of three characters or less. In this case, a search, titles only, search term extra with no quote marks locates the existing thread easily. Of course, it is the first one on the list now, because today's posts have been added to it. Before they were added and the new thread was started, the existing thread would have been fourth on the list.

I don't find search difficult or tricky at all. Sometimes, I have to search on more than one keyword, as the first keyword I think of may not be relevant, or it may be too commonly used and not specific enough. If I get too many replies searching all posts, I may have to restrict it to titles only.

I would like to encourage members to use search. It isn't hard, and the more you use it, the easier it gets. This is the most powerful tool on FT for getting the information you need, IMO.

When my injured leg was at its worst, I purchased an XTRA seat in economy and had to defend XTRA practically with my life. Not just the seat but the storage space in front of that seat.

I learned to immediately put my stuff all over the seat and the storage area as soon as I boarded and even then I had a problem with people who saw what appeared to be an empty aisle seat and wanted it.

This became an even bigger issue when the XTRA seat was a middle seat and the 3rd seat was occupied by someone I did not know.

The FA's would help me now and then but I couldn't depend on them to do so especially if person in the 3rd seat raised the arm rest and started creeping over.

Open to suggestions about tactics.

AA can certainly sell you an adjacent empty seat so call back until you get an informed agent.

+1. It is best to use the "hang up and try again" rule. After while, you should get an AAgent who can help you.

The language in the link makes it sounds like it's conditional (body size) as opposed to just for convenience/space ... "If you meet the above criteria"

The opportunistic side of me begins to wonder if there's a Butt In Two Seats opportunity here for Mileage runs

The terms of the extra seat are pretty clear -- which is that you cannot earn miles for it.

Are there seats available on the plane? That might be it. Did you ask why?

If there are then

a) tell them the hubby is a big fatty and they will make you buy one or
b) tell them you are a cellist and they will sell you a seat for the cello.

Then bring a ukelele.

Don't understand the hesitance here. One LESS passenger means fewer bags to deal with, less weight (and fuel) and less commotion. They make money for doing nothing...

If the aircraft is a 738, try for row 16 or 17. This has a blocked middle seat.
