Thx for the info, albeit disappointing.

So I would have a better chance switching to same flight Saturday and at 7:08pm could get upgraded or maybe AA is holding back on that flight knowing tonite was cancelled and things could be a mess. Shocked they closed the airport it’s fine 15 min north but must be bad there.

Honestly I wouldn't count on getting an upgrade (let alone a companion) for your flights.

Just a reality check that's all.

Full in F ? That’s crazy like there are 12 open on Friday but full on Sat..

Yea but Saturday is arguably a busier day ex-FLL than any other day of the week, especially as we're dead in the middle of spring break and cruise season.

Is there a way to see how many of each status people are on a flight in Y?

Also when does the upgrade list come out where you see the names/initials of people waiting for an upgrade ?

This is only my 2nd ever booked in Y flight since starting flying w AA so I have no clue how it works. I thought at the 100/72/48/24 upgraded begin for the respective tier class but I’m learning that’s not the case.

Yeah you’ll find that just because the window opened and seats are available, your upgrade won’t process. Just because a seat is available and the upgrade window opens, doesn’t automatically mean you get the seat, often it doesn’t. AA holds seats for last minute sales (particularly on a south Florida/LA flight), upgrade purchases, and what is likely happening with tomorrows flight, irrops.

I agree the chances aren't great however I wouldn't lose all hope yet. The seatmap for 345 tomorrow still has the 2nd exit rows completely wide open with scattered other seats still available, which tells me there's not that many elites booked on it at this point. And with 12 in F open any EXP's or PLT Pro's would most likely have already been upgraded before the FLL irrrops. Additionally there are a scattered few J seats available for sale on a few earlier flights to DFW and CLT.

IME this kind of irrops can go 50/50 one of two ways, you'll either wake up tomorrow and be pleasantly surprised with an upgrade or you'll wake up and the seatmap will now be 100% full with no upgrade in sight.

I was surprised 14 were open 5 days out and after the EXP and PP cut offs still 12 left. Although I understand now the actual cut offs mean nothing.

no way to see the status and not until 12 hours before. People listed with SWU or miles +co pay upgrades are also listed and should in theory get priority over the comp upgrades but isn’t always the case.

One thing I don’t understand is why is the LAX flight zeroed out w no inventory and not for sale but FLL-DFW flights are totally available and for sale for tomorrow. If the possible issue for irrops is FLL why is just LAX zeroed out?

This week’s upgrades:

Domestic Complimentary
  • DEN-ORD, 738, Wednesday at around 3:30pm, did not clear (was #9 of 38, unusual)

SWU - all the below on the same day/itinerary, all cleared at booking about 16 days prior to departure
  • ORD-DCA, A319, Thursday at 1pm, cleared at booking. [I think the agent forced this one through as it wasn’t showing as available]
  • DCA-JFK, E70, Thursday at 5pm, cleared at booking
  • JFK-DEL, 77W, Y—>J, Thursday, cleared at booking

looks like they are all zeroed out now for today, tomorrow and most of Sunday. Could be because there are a limited number of nonstops fll-lax, the bookings on other flights out of fll were tight before the weather issues and the assumption people would still want the nonstop.

Also, keep in mind the seat map isn’t an indicator of how full the flight is. 12 empty seats a few days ago would generally indicate a relatively empty flight, but people could be booked without seat assignments (codeshares booked through other airlines, corporate travel etc.

Interesting. Well i def think the cancelled flight hurt me and tbh still a bit confused and frustrated because with a decent amount open now I’m way down to 6 on the upgrade even though only 2 PP and EXP took seats after their original windows opened

it says 6 seats left and we are 6 and 7 and I set it only to give us the seats of 2 are available so I am going to miss F I guess

One of glimmer of hope maybe is that EF is showing 8 open which mean I would make the cut.

I guess there were quite a few higher elites in Y who got moved over to tonight’s flight and jumped me on the list.

Also was wondering can I call AA and split off the upgrade request so they do it separately and bring it says 6 open and I’m 6 maybe we can at least get 1? Would the companion then fall off the list or stay right at 7?

You can do that, however given this situation I wouldn't call but rather just tell them at the gate that you're willing to split up if there's only 1 upgrade seat left.

Don’t read too much into the upgrade windows, particularly as a platinum. Just because the window opens, doesn’t meant AA will automatically process one just because a seat is there for sale. They just advertise that your ability to be upgraded STARTs at xyz hours and will continue right until departure. It’s in AAs best interest to hold seats back as it allows for the seat to be sold, to accommodate paid F passengers in irrops, and higher level elites etc.

Also, one quirk of the waitlist on the app is that it only shows the waitlist for those individuals who have checked in. Don’t be surprised to see yourself fall father down list as more people check in through out the day and at the counter. For example myself as an EP, if I was booked on your flight and checked in right now, I would instantly bump you down to 7 and 8 and so on.

The weather didn’t do you any favors, otherwise I would have agreed you had a decent shot, atleast for one of you.

Well apparently AA was right showing 6 left and EF was wrong because now it’s 6 on EF which AA was showing since the list opened up. I’m still 6 though but going to lose out on both and unless I get to the gate early enough to ask for them to split it then ya no dice on that front either. No one on the list ever drops off this close to flight right?

Also I noticed on the list 2 ppl same first 3 letters of last name aren’t right next to each other how my companion is with me. Assuming it’s not just a coincidence and they are together how come they are separated? Is that because they have theirs split off?
