I’m not an expert on how the actual IT system works, but it seems like it’s partially a function I minimum inventory rules that appear to be route and plane-type based, as well as perhaps (though I may be reaching here) based on considerations around whether IROPS could happen. I’ve been upgraded anytime throughout the allotted windows, not just at the 72, 48, 24 hour marks.
Surprised on a Friday in April the only non stop of the day has 12 of 20 left (FLL-LAX). I was looking at MIA now and w 7 non stops not one has more than 6 seats left and most have 2-3 only. |
BOS-DCA Tuesday Evening — no dice, but 14C was fine. Was 1 of 8 from 12 hours out, but it was also J1 when I booked last Saturday so I kept expectations low. Marginally hopeful when there was one seat open, but that disappeared about two hours out as someone likely SDFC’d or bought a walk up fare as the upgrade list remained in tact.
DCA-BOS Wed Night - was J2 when I booked with mixed remaining seats so I splurged $59 for the up-fare (no app upgrades being offered). I believe we left with ten on the list and no one clearing. |
Still 12 seats left in F and approaching 24 hours but still no upgrade. I don’t get this, isn’t then when a Plat should get an upgrade ?

What is the flight in question?
EF showing 12 left. AA showed 12 left too except now the flight isn’t available for sale on AA which is weird With 12 seats left and well within 48 hours I don’t understand this. There is a companion attached to my res if that matters but it’s showing we are both listed for an upgrade |
Looks like inventory is zerored out for tomorrow 4/14. Tonight's flight is cancelled likely due to the issues at FLL, not sure about last nights flight. My guess is they are holding inventory back for irrop accommodations.

Also EXP and PP who are moved over from Y tonite will get upgrades over a Plat on the original flight ? I think I’m SOL. |

Unfortunately that’s correct. Not all will necessarily move over, some may have moved to MIA etc but your chances aren’t looking good. Not to mention I’m sure there were other people flying to LAX with connections in CLT, DFW that could have gotten to moved to tomorrows flight. You would be behind paying F passengers and CK/EP/PP from those flights as well.
So I would have a better chance switching to same flight Saturday and at 7:08pm could get upgraded or maybe AA is holding back on that flight knowing tonite was cancelled and things could be a mess. Shocked they closed the airport it’s fine 15 min north but must be bad there. |

IME this kind of irrops can go 50/50 one of two ways, you'll either wake up tomorrow and be pleasantly surprised with an upgrade or you'll wake up and the seatmap will now be 100% full with no upgrade in sight. |

Thx for the info, albeit disappointing.

Just because your window is open doesn't mean you'll get an upgrade. I rarely get an upgrade at 96 hour window despite their being many F seats available. |

AA will try to sell everyone of those 12 seats before a comp upgrade, up until boarding.
