I'm hitting about 50% anything PDB, 10% randomly offering water/OJ, 40% nothing. Of the 40% nothing, only a small fraction was reasonable (late catering, late flight, rush, etc.)

Truly hit or miss.

I've found around 75% and overall service seems to be up a notch from pre-pandemic. That doesnt mean there isn't the occasional poor performance

Did a quick turnaround trip to Detroit over the weekend. No PDB offered…

phx to dtw, 4:50p departure. Delayed about an hour due to mechanical issue. Lead FA made up kept the drinks flowing as soon as we were airborne though.

Dtw to dfw 548p departure. Nothing offered even though it was a light load and boarding was complete in about 20 mins.

dfw to phx 8:59p departure, only water was offered.

1/28 AA 4777 RDU-CVG EMB-175: No PDB
1/28 AA 2610 CVG-DFW 737-800: Water or OJ
1/28 AA 5730 DFW-AMA CRJ-900: Full PDB

Three flights, three different PDBs. Typical AA.

Does AA policy not discourage excess alcohol

For the first time ever, I was not only offered a PDB, but was offered a refill, before takeoff.

Then, in the air, I saw a neighboring passenger be given a double and then when the FA came by, the FA said, “wouldn’t you like another” and the passenger hemmed and hawed and the FA said, “of course you would” and brought another.

I don’t know if the neighbor had a refill before takeoff but this makes at least four alcoholic drinks in a total of two hours.

Doesn’t AA discourage flight attendants from serving that many drinks? I wouldn’t want that many, and for a FA to encourage excess drinking is really a bit much.

As long as the passenger isn't being aggressive, harmful, or having alcohol poisoning, it's none of your business how much they drink or how much the FA offers. People tolerate different levels, so be it.

Your understanding of “excess” is not the same for everyone. People have different tolerances and react to alcohol differently. If a passenger is enjoying a few drinks and isn’t being disruptive, I see no issue.

The blood alcohol content calculator I found online says that 4 drinks in 2 hours for a 175 pound guy is .11, which is well over the DUI threshold. I don’t think a FA should be giving drinks to passengers at that rate particularly if the passenger isn’t asking for them.

2/3 AA 584 DFW-TUS: no PDB

Strange and poor service on this flight. FA completely skipped three passengers for drink orders once airborne (myself and seat mate included); did not offer refills, until haphazardly doing so during descent; passed a half-empty snack basket once; then again skipped my seat mate and me on a second snack basket pass. The rest of the time was spent sitting in the galley and on her phone. Honestly I think something might have been off with her, which didn't inspire confidence in the event of a safety issue.

My unsolicited two cents - As noted above, it's well documented that people have very different tolerances; but more importantly, the DUI threshold is (rightly) an entirely different and more conservative standard than drinking while settled into your airplane seat.
