Not sure if this is the best place to ask re: companion certificate bookings but...

A) Do these earn loyalty points for either the primary ticketholder or companion?
B) Despite language about no upgrades, it shows on the app that a upgrade is requested for me and companion. Any recent experiences there?

Apologies if I missed this guidance elsewhere! Thank you in advance for any advice.

Are you referring to certificates which were expiring on 12/31/21 (which were issued to me as paper certificates)? Or those expiring on 12/17/22 (which were issued to me electronically)?
Sorry if this should be obvious. to me.

A) Yes. The full price ticket will earn LP's normally. The companion will earn 99 LP's (for the $99 fare)
B) Yes, you will be upgraded if you have status. What you can't do is upgrade with miles.

Okay Talkers, I am curious if anyone has some insight for my situation. I currently have the Barclays Aviator Red with about 10K spend this year. I am working toward AA Gold with 15K L Points this year. I can up my spend to hit 30K Loyalty and 20K spend to hit Gold and the Aviator Red's single companion certificate by the end of February. I will need to start paying the Mortgage with the Red to make this happen but 2/3 of the spend is regular swipe. I also now have an upgrade offer to the Aviator Silver. However I recall reading cautions about changing card products and messing up your benefits. Ultimately, I would like to update the Red to Silver but I am wondering if I should do it now or wait until the companion pass posts? And are there any other issues I am not seeing that should also be considered?

Hoping to get some advice. I reviewed the last couple of pages in this thread and cold not find an answer.

I have a companion ticket booked for this weekend. I am the primary and will not be able to travel due to Covid. I called AA and was sent through to meeting services and they said they have to cancel the whole ticket and my companion will have to book at current prices (which is about $300 more then our combined two ticket cost).

My questions is, what will happen if my companion boards and I just don't show up? Will they force here to rebook at the airport, what about the return trip in a few days? Am I just SOL and have to book a ticket at almost $1000?

I might try this: Call regular reservations and ask if you can slip the record for upgrade purposes, then cancel yours online, you can probably even use the funds for a future reservation. I don't know if this will work, but I think it might.

We ended up cancelling the whole ticket for credit, and booking a separate trip using miles to get my companion on the trip for the weekend. The business services agent said both credits including the $99 companion were still valid through next July.

As someone who has never earned one before: Should I go out of my way to do so? Are there any blackout dates?

I'm about 10k spend away from earning one, and deciding if I'm setting myself up for disappointment or not.

Thanks from a noob...

It really depends on what you are intending to use it for.

Holiday weekend travel? No chance, don't even bother.
Booking a domestic vacation/trip where you can travel Out and In mid-week, fares are higher than average, and you can really get a good delta between the $99 fee per person and the standard fare of the trip? Sure!

Out of the 6 or 7 certs I have earned over the years, I think I have actually used 2 of them. The rest expired as I just didn't have a need for travel w/ companion that lined up with those dates.

Limitations and Blackout dates:For residents of the 48 contiguous United States, valid for round trip travel within the 48 contiguous United States.
For residents of Hawaii only, valid for round trip travel originating in Hawaii and continuing to the 48 contiguous United States.
For residents of Alaska only, valid for round trip travel originating in Alaska and continuing to the 48 contiguous United States.

As you can see, most all significant holidays are embargoed plus/minus several days. The exception being if you wanted to travel ON the holiday (July 4, December 25).

I use my cert most every year. This year was a huge value. My DCA-LAX trip was close to $1000 round trip. At $140 per companion, my savings was nearly $1700.

With the Barclay Silver, can you bring 2 companions per cert?

(I have the Citi Bus card, and afaik only gets 1 certificate / companion?)
