I have been getting the Delta companion certificates (Amx Delta Platinum for coach) for the past 15 or so years and used them a few times, but mostly never use them either. I do recall a trip to Telluride where I used both of them and it was great. Now that I have the reserve card, that opens up FC options.

I totally understand the AA companion pass is for economy tickets and just wish they could be for business or FC.

I can see some examples such as vail, or other regional routes where it would be handy, but just have never used them in the past few years.

With prices so rock bottom right now I can see why maybe it isn't a good deal, but what about last minute tickets, or using it to go nonstop when a connection is normally cheaper?

Edit:
Also, I went to BZN/JAC last October to tour Yellowstone, and it was an expensive flight (I don't know if AA goes or what their rates are). The trip is well worthwhile, so look at those cities if you're looking for an outdoor (for covid) holiday that yields a good ROI?

If by last minute you mean less than 14 days out, I think the only way to redeem might be at the airport. The certificates need to be mailed in to ensure breakage. (insert eyeroll here)

Oh, I admit ignorance on that detail not having the certs. I was just trying to think of times flights cost more.

Also, I frequently fly in and out of Vail which can get pricey, that could be a good value.
Sporting and special events are where I have found the best value. We have used it to take the family to the Albuquerque balloon festival and college football games.

I don't have access to companion passes, but I do have a question regarding them. Would you be able to purchase two Y tickets using the companion pass, then purchase the upgrade offer after booking? Do the fare rules not even allow for an upgrade offering? In most recent cases, my offers have all been almost the exact fare difference between my Y tickets fare and the advertised F fare at the time of booking. The upgrade offer also seems to change in the same correlation to the current pricing offered for the tickets as a new booking. Just a thought I had.

My biggest complaint is the hassle involved with using them. I hate having to call in and subsequently mail the passes. It's also a bummer that they can't be used for F travel (this would be a true boon), but I feel like the T&C's make it pretty clear that it's Y only. It would also be nice if these tickets were upgradable.

I've been able to squeeze a pretty good deal of value out of them when flying with friends. On occasion, we will book with the companion pass and split the total amount three ways to lower the cost dramatically. As my home airport routinely (especially pre-COVID) has domestic Y round-trips starting in the $500+ range, they really come in handy.

It's been a while since I used these but I'm pretty sure they were upgradeable (at least for comp EXP upgrades)?

Thus, with the present rules, they are pretty much worthless to me.

Does anyone have any better ideas on how to use these.
Very much not my experience: I use my certs every year and I typically save between $400 and $800 every time I use them....

In my experience, the Companion Pass Holder is able to upgrade but the companions are not.

In the Wikipost at the top of this thread (that I moved the recently started thread into), it states:
No upgrades will be allowed on tickets issued using this certificate.
However, my companion and myself were both upgraded when we used it in Oct 2019, for AUS-DFW-FCA and return.

As far as upgrades, it seems American is constantly changing the rules. My wife used her companion certificate to book herself, her sister and her sister's husband. After the trip was ticketed, I had her split the reservation since there was C fare availability so she could upgrade to first class from DCA to EYW using miles plus co-pay. I had purchased a first class ticket for myself so me and my wife were seated together until a few strange things happened. First, we received an offer to pay $80 per person to have my sister-in-law and brother-in-law upgraded to first class from their $99 tickets. I paid the money and had them upgraded. Then when I went to print out my wife's boarding pass she was no longer in first call but instead back in coach. I immediately called American and was able to get her put back in first class but I was told you could no longer use miles plus co-pay to upgrade the full fare companion ticket, a practice I have been doing for years with companion certificate. A few months prior, I used my companion certificate to fly me and my wife to Asheville. We were both upgraded due to our status.

Forgive me if this was asked before. I just used my companion certificate and the agent gave me the address where to mail the the certificate. The address she gave me is is 1 Skyview Dr. in Fort Worth TX. Is this the correct address? I remember a different address the last time I used a Companion Certificate. Thanks.
