Have a favorite local sports team? Take a weekend trip to see them play in an away game. One of my favorite uses of these certificates.

Can these be used on a one-way or open-jaw? Or is it strictly round-trip?

Or a home game if you don't live near your team anymore.

Round trip. I tried even using them out of DCA and back to Dulles, and that was a no-go.

Silver Companion Certificate with only 1 companion

When I upgraded from the Red to the Silver, I had a use case where I had 2 travel companions for a particular trip each year. However, I now only have trips where I have 1 companion. Can I take 2 separate round trips with the same companion using "half" of the certificate each time? I have been unable to confirm if the whole certificate has to be used in the same trip with myself and 2 companions traveling in one round trip. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

Sorry, only one trip per certificate. I wish we could do what you're looking for as I never use the 2nd companion benefit.

Returning with only 2 people

I have used the companion certificates several times over the years. I had about 6 expire because of COVID even with the extensions. I like the electronic version much more that the old version you had to mail in.

I am traveling California to Florida in Jan with wife and kid. Returning a 5 days later, but the kid is not coming back.
Will this cause problems for my wife and I. Cert expires in March so I will not be able to use it otherwise.

Thanks,
-Mike

I wouldn’t bring that up as they won’t book one as a one-way.

Booked a flight for 4 of us next weekend to visit friends and now one of said friends has gotten sick and we're going to have to cancel or reschedule.

How does this work with the 2 companion cert bookings?
I've split the reservation into 2 different PNRs.. will that matter?
Will any credits be issued to the travelers individually, or will all of that come back to me?
The companion certificates originally expired at the end of the month.. will those tickets be lost (how about the $99 plus taxes) or have I inadvertently stumbled on a way to extend those certs? Also. now that I think about it... I earned those for 2022 spend, why did they expire so soon... are they 1 year from date of issue?
Do I have to call meeting services, or can I just click the cancel trip button on the website?
Following up with what I've learned for anyone else with these questions... LIGHTBULBS was pretty spot on with his guess:

I called meeting services and inquired... was told that the companion certs would not be reissued, but could be re-used before original expiration by the travelers list on the existing tickets only. I was also directed to only cancel the reservations through meeting services, but not why.

Since I have 2 PNRs and I don't like to trust people when they can't explain the reasons for the advice, I cancelled one PNR through meeting services, and the other by clicking the "Cancel Trip" button online. Both yielded exactly the same results as follows:

Each of the 4 passengers was issued a Flight Credit (not Trip Credit), for the amount of cash used in the transaction.. so for the companion cert passengers, $99 plus taxes/fees and tor the other 2 the full prince of the ticket. These credits expire 1 year from date of ticketing (which used to be right before the flight for these certs since you had to mail them in, but now these tickets issue almost immediately.. so this costs me a couple of months of life on these credits.

Presumably, since the Flight credits carry the same PNR as the cancelled itinerary, If I were to fly again, I could take one or both of the original companions with me on any trip so long as travel is completed prior to the expiry of the cert so long as I book at least 48 in advance of the 1st flight... but I wont be able to confirm this as I'm not flying anywhere next week. I imagine the fact that I split the PNRs would at best cause confusion since on PNR has the cardholder and a valid companion (no problem) and the other PNR has a full price ticket a companion, and attached to it a cert with my name as the cardholder... but, like I said.. I wont find out this time.

Good questions that I don’t know firm answers to but here are my guesses.

1) the 99 credits are valid to be applied to any travel as a flight credit in the name of the passenger within a year of original issue using the ticket number. It’s as if you bought a 99 dollar ticket.

2) you can call meeting services to reapply the carts to a new reservation but I believe travel just be completed by the time the certificate expires. I don’t know if there is a backdoor way to extend like with SWUs. I haven’t seen any discussion of that being possible.
