As AA ratchets up its spend requirements for maintaining elite status, I am thinking that it may be time to dismantle my AA-miles hamster wheel, in particular, to downgrade the Silver Aviator since I don't think I'll have any use for the marginal EQMs in the future. Question for this thread:

Anyone have any experience using an already-earned companion certificate after downgrading from Silver?

For those who have recently used a companion cert, how long does it take your "booked" ticket to go from "Ticket pending" to "ticketed"?

I did a purchase on Monday and mailed the certificate in the same afternoon (probably picked up by the mail carrier Tuesday morning where the post box is located)...

International flights?

For all of you that have used the certificate, did you use the certificate to travel internationally?

I recall the old US Airways companion certificates were limited to domestic travel only. I've read the T&C's and there is no language regarding usage on international flights but I'm not keeping my hopes up on that.

From the cert front:

Valid for travel on flights within the 48 contiguous United States on American Airlines or American Eagle.

I think this is even more restricted which use to allow travel to Canada.

Thank you. I read the back of the certificate a couple of times and couldn't find anything, when all this time, all I had to do was read the front of the actual certificate - go figure.

Small datapoint -- traveled this past weekend with my wife (who also has status) and one of our friends. After splitting me off, we were all eligible for -- and received -- sticker/complimentary upgrades. Miles also posted for all of us, and distance-based (G fare IIRC, so 75% plus elite bonuses) at that!

G fare is 50% of miles flown.

Just to clarify, the regular flyer got it based on distance, not revenue? Is this normal?

I have an expensive 750 mile flight coming up, with a fare ex taxes of $450. It would be EQD of $150 RT vs. $450.

Any others with experience?

Re: G fare -- for "special fares", yes it's 50%. All three of us -- regular flyer + two companions -- earned per the other "when ticket details are not available" chart (the second one on this page):

That's a bummer for this trip because of it's distance.

Did the receipt just show a combined price or did it break out the fares. I"m wondering whether I could request EQD based on $$ (which I would need the receipt showing what I paid to do).

So I was wondering if anyone can confirm the following as I searched and could not find it:

1) Do the tickets purchased accrue miles? (both regular fare and companions) I know that upgrades are not allowed but were in the past.

2) Is there a minimum spend on the first paid ticket (In the past it was $250)

Thanks in advance

Mine is not showing print, but my anniversary date was 3 days ago so perhaps it will process later.

Loss of any fare class and upgradability (and many more blackout dates) is a pretty big deal. Used certificate for Y fares which allowed a 5k miles upgrade for all pax, which was good in the past. A bit surprising given that award tickets will be upgrade able.

But given that the card provides $6k of EQD spending, may be worth keeping.
