NOTE: The 10% mileage rebate (to a maximum of 10,000 miles per card per year) is ending 1 May 2019.
Q. What are the basic contours of the AA 10% rebate on miles redemptions?
FAQ: Holders of certain Citi and Barclays cards receive a 10% miles rebate on awards
Q. What are the basic contours of the AA 10% rebate on miles redemptions?
A. Holders of certain "open and active" credit cards issued by Citibank and Barclays are eligible for a 10% rebate (up to 10,000 miles per calendar year) on award redemptions. Having more than one qualifying card will not allow you to receive a larger rebate (no "double dipping").
Which Citibank credit cards qualify for this benefit? The rebate program applies only to primary card holders of these Citi-issued cards:
It does not apply to the Citi Gold World MasterCard, Citi Executive products, or other Citi Business cards.
Q. Which Barclays credit cards qualify for this benefit?- Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature
- Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard
- Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard
- Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
A. The rebate program applies only to primary card holders of these Barclays-issued cards: It does not apply to the Aviator or Aviator Blue cards.
Q. So if I have a qualifying Citibank card and and qualifying Barclays card, will I get double the rebate?- AA Aviator Red
- AA Aviator Silver
- US Airways Premier World (no longer issued)
A. No. As stated above, having more than one qualifying card does not increase your rebate.
Note that if you have at least one qualifying Citi card and at least one qualifying Barclays card, your rebate will be processed as two separate transactions with half attributed to each card. (For example, if you redeem 40,000 miles, you will see two separate AA mileage credits of 2,000 miles.)
Q. How soon should I receive the rebate?Note that if you have at least one qualifying Citi card and at least one qualifying Barclays card, your rebate will be processed as two separate transactions with half attributed to each card. (For example, if you redeem 40,000 miles, you will see two separate AA mileage credits of 2,000 miles.)
A. In most cases, the rebate posts within minutes after processing of an award redemption. On your AA transaction details it will show a 10% deposit on the same line as the mileage redemption, so it's all in one place.
Q. What if I redeem miles now for an award flight next year?A. For purposes of the 10,000-mile annual rebate cap, the date that matters is the date the award is issued, not the date on which the award will be used.
Q. Do I have to use my AA card to pay any taxes/fees in order to receive the rebate?A. No. You do not have to pay with your AA card.
Q. Does the rebate apply to AA partner flights?A. The rebate--subject to the annual 10K cap--applies to all award redemptions of AA miles.
Q. Does the rebate apply if I book an award for someone else?A. The rebate--subject to the annual 10K cap--applies to all award redemptions of AA miles.
Q. Does the rebate apply if I book a Citi/Barclays Reduced Miles Award?A. The rebate--subject to the annual 10K cap--applies to all award redemptions of AA miles.
Q. What happens if I claim an award, get the rebate but later cancel the award?A. The rebated miles for an award that is canceled will be "clawed back" by the card issuer.
Q. What happens if I'm short a few miles for my award, but the rebate would fulfill the miles needed when applied?A. Nothing. This is a rebate. The miles are rebated (soon) after you secure the award, not before or during.

Partner airlines count as well, I've gotten the rebate on an award ticket that was exclusively QF (Qantas).

So to be clear -
you get 10% back on AA redemptions, whether they're used on AA flights or on a partner, right?
(I'd rather use AA miles to fly a partner but if it means forfeiting the 10% rebate i'll use them on AA).
I didn't see this spelled out in the AA terms, even tho some FTers said "yes" to partners.

You won't get the rebate on that booking as you weren't an AAdvantage cardholder at the time of reservation.
If you're EXP, and the award was still available for a new booking, you could cancel and rebook and likely get it, but otherwise you'd have to pay $150 to redeposit the miles and that would not be worth it. You'll have to book a new award now to get the 10% rebate.

The thought was, because the 10% bonus miles back benefit is from the Dividend Miles program, and because that program did not merge with AAdvantage until 2Q, was the 3/1 booking ineligible for the 10% bonus?

Also, just to be 100% clear, I double checked my account activity from this year, and I have received the 10% rebate on a booking that was exclusively EY flights, and on another booking that was exclusively BA flights, and on another booking that was exclusively QF flights. So, any award ticket redemption using AA miles, barring computer error, will credit, as I have had EY, BA, and QF all credit at a minimum.
Thanks for the input BOSman. At the time of booking (3/1) I was (and still am) a Citi AA Exec cardholder. However did not use that card to book as the security fee (~$10) wasn't enough spend to incentivize the 2x AAdvantage points. (Put it on my CO Venture card, and later 'Erased' the purchase.)

I have read this thread and I am confused, the more I read, the more contradicting info there is.
I have both AA MC PLAT and a US Air (Aviator card)
Do I only get 10K total from both cards combined, or is it each 10K?
This January I redeemed 100K, got 10K back from my AA MC. (before Aviator was even announced)
Just this week, I redeemed 60K. Should I get 10% back from Aviator? Or since I got 10% back from AA MC, I have reached my max?
Thanks!

Yes, you did not have a card eligible for a 10% rebate on AAdvantage bookings at the time of booking (Citi AA Exec does not have the benefit), so you won't get a rebate on that 3/1 booking. However, you should get 10% back on your next 100k worth of AAdvantage award tickets now every calendar year, including the remainder of this one. Hope that helps . And also, the bonus miles benefit did not exist with Dividend Miles on the percentage basis, at least not recently. It was only a general 5k discount/rebate on US DM awards on US Airways flights. The AA rebate is on any AAdvantage award booking with any partner.
Further, because the 2 program are now splitting the whole 10% bonus percentage amount, the other 5% half (if having only one card, the DM Premier World/Aviator at this point) would've only been made post merger, not before.

I remembered incorrectly the old DM benefit, too. Yeah, now I do recall the 5k mile 'discount' for round-trip tickets on US metal.
Even used that to fly to Vegas for 35k DM. Worst redemption ever, I learned a lesson that trip. Too bad I hadn't before, it wouldn't have also cost the extra 64k+ MR mile redemption for 4 nights in a casino.

The value is had in international travel.
Learning all the time.
Stumbled on one technique for domestic flights using US Bank FlexPoints. 10k MS with Target RC on FP card yields 20k FP. (May be dependent on TGT coding as grocery.) A sub-$400 domestic flight is this amount (or less), and so allows checking for 1st class fare. Maybe even upgrade passes that come with elite status, promotions, and/or last minute airline gate reconfigs. *
*What is this called?

10% miles back from Citi AA MC - must card be activated or is getting approved ok?
I recently applied for and was approved for the AA Citi MasterCard, which provides 10% miles back, but I'm still waiting for the card to arrive in the mail. Can I book an award ticket on AA now, or must I wait for the card to arrive and call the 800 number to activate it in order to be eligible for the 10% miles back? I don't want too long because I'm afraid the award ticket for the flight I'm looking at will disappear.

From the AA/CITI site:
"For benefit to apply, your CitiŽ / AAdvantageŽ account must be open and active at the time of redemption."
