NOTE: The 10% mileage rebate (to a maximum of 10,000 miles per card per year) is ending 1 May 2019.

FAQ: Holders of certain Citi and Barclays cards receive a 10% miles rebate on awards

Q. What are the basic contours of the AA 10% rebate on miles redemptions?
A. Holders of certain "open and active" credit cards issued by Citibank and Barclays are eligible for a 10% rebate (up to 10,000 miles per calendar year) on award redemptions. Having more than one qualifying card will not allow you to receive a larger rebate (no "double dipping").
Which Citibank credit cards qualify for this benefit?
The rebate program applies only to primary card holders of these Citi-issued cards:
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard
  • Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
It does not apply to the Citi Gold World MasterCard, Citi Executive products, or other Citi Business cards.
Q. Which Barclays credit cards qualify for this benefit?
A. The rebate program applies only to primary card holders of these Barclays-issued cards:
  • AA Aviator Red
  • AA Aviator Silver
  • US Airways Premier World (no longer issued)
It does not apply to the Aviator or Aviator Blue cards.
Q. So if I have a qualifying Citibank card and and qualifying Barclays card, will I get double the rebate?
A. No. As stated above, having more than one qualifying card does not increase your rebate.

Note that if you have at least one qualifying Citi card and at least one qualifying Barclays card, your rebate will be processed as two separate transactions with half attributed to each card. (For example, if you redeem 40,000 miles, you will see two separate AA mileage credits of 2,000 miles.)
Q. How soon should I receive the rebate?
A. In most cases, the rebate posts within minutes after processing of an award redemption. On your AA transaction details it will show a 10% deposit on the same line as the mileage redemption, so it's all in one place.
Q. What if I redeem miles now for an award flight next year?
A. For purposes of the 10,000-mile annual rebate cap, the date that matters is the date the award is issued, not the date on which the award will be used.
Q. Do I have to use my AA card to pay any taxes/fees in order to receive the rebate?
A. No. You do not have to pay with your AA card.
Q. Does the rebate apply to AA partner flights?
A. The rebate--subject to the annual 10K cap--applies to all award redemptions of AA miles.
Q. Does the rebate apply if I book an award for someone else?
A. The rebate--subject to the annual 10K cap--applies to all award redemptions of AA miles.
Q. Does the rebate apply if I book a Citi/Barclays Reduced Miles Award?
A. The rebate--subject to the annual 10K cap--applies to all award redemptions of AA miles.
Q. What happens if I claim an award, get the rebate but later cancel the award?
A. The rebated miles for an award that is canceled will be "clawed back" by the card issuer.
Q. What happens if I'm short a few miles for my award, but the rebate would fulfill the miles needed when applied?
A. Nothing. This is a rebate. The miles are rebated (soon) after you secure the award, not before or during.

That's what the T&C suggested, and what I figured. Anything else was likely a glitch.

So it's not stacking, but now Citi/Barclay will each only give you 5% back. How exactly does that make any sense according to the terms of the cards?

Sorry, this was just in relation to the 10%/10k cap.

We had an award reservation on hold, due to expire at 11:59 pm PST on Friday, March 27. Did not make a final decision until about 10:30 pm that night, website was down, called to either extend the hold or book it. As no inventory as available, we decided to pull the trigger, confirmation was not received until approx 7:30 am on March 28.

I was able to partially access my account this morning, shows that my USDM transferred properly, and both Citi and Barclay's credited the 10% redemption bonus!

My Barclays account is up for renewal in the next couple of weeks, bonus miles do not justify paying the annual fee to both, I have no intention of charging $30k on either card for the 10k bonus, would keep the Barclays card if they still offered the companion pass. Will see if they are willing to waive the fee to keep me as a customer.
Upon further review: I booked 2 award seats, for a total of 65,000 miles, received a total of 6500 miles. So in fact they do NOT stack, bonus is split between the 2

Another reason not to pay both annual fees.

Too bad. Before that question gets lost, do I understand that the miles are rebated at the time of booking the award, rather than the time of travel?

Reservation is for 2 adults - 12.5k miles outbound, 20k return. Appears that redemption bonus is broken out by leg, for each passenger.

Yes. As an EXP last year, I made several award reservation changes, bonus was always credited at ticketing, rarely clawed back when a reservation was cancelled.

When I called AA last month I was told the 10K definitely stacked to 20K max if you had the Barclay and the citicards.

Two weeks ago AAdvantage CS told me they do not stack and pointed me to the language on the AA.com merge page that clarifies this.

Unless they change their mind 10K per AAdvantage account per year is it.

I booked a redemption for 25,000 miles today. The card bonus was oddly split between both cards for 1,250 each, adding up to 2,500 miles (10% rebate).

I dont know if it stacks or not, but we booked 50K x 2 on Friday that did not get ticketed until today. 100K miles coming out from a single account that has 1 AA card and 2 US cards, but the 10K miles are split into 4 x 2500, with 2 labeled Citi, 2 labeled Barclays.

It looks like if you own both Citi and Barclays card, the rebate would be equally split between 2 accounts.

So there is no stacking, more like splitting. If this is the case, neither card is meeting their agreement with card holders.

I redeemed 110k today, and holds both Citi AA Plat and Barclay Aviator Red. The rebates already hit my AA account, and 4 rebates were listed, total 10k. If they stack in any meaningful fashion, I should have received 11k back.

I need to call AA sometime tomorrow. May ask the agents there, but I kind of doubt they would have the authoritative answer on this.

I redeemed reward for 2 - 62.5 each for total of 125,000 miles.

I got a total of 10,000 miles. I don't understand why it is split within both Barclay and Citi?

Couple of really weird things that happened Monday after I booked 125k miles worth of reward tickets.

I saw in my miles account 2 separate rebates, 1 from Citi, 1 from Barclay, both listed as 10% rebate.

HOWEVER, I canceled my Barclay acct 10 days ago and 2, both rebates showed up for only 2500 miles each....nowhere near 10%.

I think we've established that we aren't getting stacking for more than 10k miles rebate.

The question is, has anyone contacted Citi/Barclays/AA and complained?

Citi & Barclays credit cards - 10% miles back

I now have a Citi and a Barclays credit card that each offer 10% refund on award tickets, up to 10,000 miles per year.

Does anyone know if that means 10,000 miles across all cards or 10,000 miles per card? Two cards with the same bank wouldn't get me more than 10,000 miles/year back, but I haven't found anything definitive on cards from two different banks.

I read in a previous post on this subject that the 10% rebate comes from American's system directly so having multiple cards (even from different banks) will make no difference on the 10k limit.
