I've not ever seen it anywhere; from the emailed booking confirmation, to the printout I get at the airport, to the printed receipt I get when I turn the car in.

I have miles printed on all of my receipts. Even the one i returned today 9/3 - 9/7. I rented from ABE.

Noob question ... I already have an AVIS rental reservation for Sept 14th (4 days) and booked through my employer travel agent - much cheaper deal than what I see through AA.

Is there any way I can get AAdvantage points/miles?

No, not unless you used the coupon when booking.

Why not just use the AWD that the employer TA uses (if you have it available), and make the booking yourself? I use my employer's AWD, but make the booking directly at avis.com

Add the coupon MUAA035 to the reservation.

Yes, has worked for me, and almost all of my rentals have been pre-paid.

Yup. If you look back you'll see I've posted twice already that miles have posted (9150 each time, or 3 x 3050 per weekend).
