To those wanting to upgrade a current City card, I've tried this, and if your card qualifies for an upgrade (unlikely due to restrictions that appear on many Citicards) upgrades do not qualify for bonus miles.

Not directly related, but I wonder who uses Points.com for trades. Even with the 15% bonus it's a total ripoff. I just checked now and I can get 3000 AA miles for trading 10,000 Delta miles and paying a $130 fee. Who would do that?

915,027

The 25,000 miles from 20,000 Starwood Points have hit so I am now sitting at 915,027 miles.

Remember, if you were looking to buy miles, today's the last day to get the extra 10k miles for a 40k mile purchase.

Can anyone explain the new working on charity donations, USO? It says 'not for elite qualification miles". https://www.uso.org/aadvantage/

I thought that we had until 12/01/2011.

I made my USO donation anyway and just need some explaining on this.

Thanks.

That language is for the annual qualification miles (EQMs) you need, not the lifetime status that the 12/1/11 deadline refers to.

Was it ever for EQM?

You don't care about EQM anyway in this context, just RDM and lifetime miles.

Elite qualification miles are miles that qualify a person for annual elite status, gold, platinum, executive platinum, that is butt-in-seat miles. These miles do not count for obtaining annual status. Million miler status, as you know, currently includes all AAdvantage miles.

Here's how I am going to make 5MM, with 4,897,282 LTM showing in my account: Just applied for Citi Executive AAdvantage card (25,000 bonus miles), have flights booked to fly by the end of November for another ~60,000 miles (including bonus miles), and fill in with some AAdvantage Dining, purchases made with my Citi cards, BIS / EQM and Citi Exec card purchases next year as backups to infill where necessary.

My challenge is to cross the 5MM threshold AFTER 1/1/12 so I can get my 4 SWUs with another year's usefulness on them (earn them this year, they are good through February 2013, earn them in 2012, they would be good through February 2014). I'm slightly sad the "5M" emblazoned status card will likely be the last MM node for me - no 6MM I suspect, with the new requirements.

JDiver and others: thanks for the explanations and advice!

My goal prior to 12/1/2011 is to get as close to 2MM as possible so I can fly it in the rest of the way during the next couple years. My USO donation via AA.com at 10 AA miles per $ (minimum donation $25.00) is something I do every year anyway, but will help me along this year toward my goals.

Does anyone know how the transactions show up when AA processes reward refunds on a award trip?

When using aadvantageeshopping with coupons, I notice I'm credited for the full miles, and debited the amount for the coupons. For example, spending $100 at overstock @ 3 miles / $ = 300 miles credited to my account. If I had a 10% off coupon, I would see a debit line of 'ESHOPPING PRODUCT RETURN' for 30 miles. That means 300 miles are credited to my MM count, while I earn 270 actual miles.

If I booked a RT First Class award from North America to Africa for 200,000 miles and later cancelled the trip, would AA remove the existing 200,000 miles debit or add another credit of 200,000 miles to my account? Wandering if that 200,000 miles would add to the MM miles.

I have no idea, but I do notice that debits on the statement have corresponding credit lines for 0 miles with the date of the debit transaction.

For example, I redeemed a one-way J class transatlantic discount award a while back. It appeared as follows in the miles credited section:

50000 FROM MLS DEF THRU xx/xx/12 0 0 0

and as follows below in the miles debited section:

xx/xx/11 UP50A NA-EUR BUS OW TKT -50,000 0 -50,000

Perhaps that strange duplication will affect your hypothesis.

sitting at 790k and here's what I'm doing:

-been earning miles from a Guaranty Bank airmiles account that ended up with BBVA Compass when Guaranty folded. Left it there even after they reduced the earning rate. Now I'm going to pull that $60k out and put it in a 2 yr Bankdirect CD so that'll be 60k now.

-should receive 23.5k from a new CitiGold checking account I opened a few months ago but am a little concerned that someone mentioned difficulty getting the bonus. I never funded this account with anything near the min amount to prevent fees.

-opened the world elite Citi MC yesterday and was told I'd receive the 25k bonus (have signed up for 2 other Citi cards in the last year or so)

-transferred 43k Diner's Club Rewards Points to AA

this will put me at 941.5k

I will spend $40k on the Citi elite MC next year so that should get 40k + 10k bonus (I assume the EQM bonus counts towards LT)

I only have 1 trip before 12/1 but it's AUS->JFK->ZRH and I'll do the mileage multiplier. This should get me there with a little bit of buffer and if something goes wrong BIS flying will get me there soon enough.

Then I'll relax
