2/19/20 SEA-ORD AS 26 MVPG upgrade cleared at T-7. Chose 2C (prefer aisle), then was moved to a window when I got the email 2 hours later. By that point, no more aisle's - ugh.

I’ve had coworkers who went to Hawaii for a business meeting and turned around that very same day! Crazy...at least stay another day or two right?

Actually, no.

So here is what had happened:

1) I had weekend trip planned in LA: NYC-LAX-NYC
2) Work needed me in SF, before and after my weekend trip to LA: NYC-SFO-NYC (so my LA trip is now nested inside the SF trip)
3) To preserve my LA trip, purchased a reverse roundtrip back to NY from SF: SFO-NYC-SFO, along with some judicious use of SDC options, I still slept in three beds in all three locations (LA, NYC, SF) for the weekend, and dined with friends in LA as planned.

The final itinerary:

EWR->SFO
SFO->EWR
JFK->LAX
LAX->JFK
JFK->SFO
SFO->EWR

Spent less than $500 of total airfares on above

I once had a last minute work meeting come up in Orlando the day before I was due to take a vacation to Nashville. This was before AS offered the direct to BNA, so I was actually going to fly out at 11:50PM to DFW the same day as my meeting in MCO. I seriously considered flying back to SEA after the meeting and getting in about 2 hours before my red-eye back to DFW for the miles... but decided that was just too much. Just stayed in MCO the night, flew to DFW in the morning and connected to BNA.

Before OLCI opened, it was showing an 8 F configuration and F was completely sold out. Once the OLCI window opened, the seat map updated to show 12 seat F config so there were 4 empty seats. I was 3rd on the upgrade list, so the fact that they had to hold seats due to the uncertainty around the configuration saved me and scored me the upgrade. On a side note, first time in the remodeled airbus F seats, I really like that little tablet/phone holder that pops up on the tray table... they need that on all F seats (or just all seats!).

AS 110 (SFO-JFK); 2/27; R fare. Booked 1/25. MVP75K. Upgraded at T-38hr.

This flight has been showing F0 for the past 4 days. Upgraded this morning; had 3 F seats to choose from. Probably more underselling F and overselling Y. R was $119; X was $99. I notice that they have increased the buyup on this route since then; X is still $99 but R is now $133. This matches UA.

Now 5/5 on the year. My return flight is the first leg of an award (booked in A) so no upgrade required.

I have a lot of coworkers who have gone to Hawaii regularly (as in once a month for a few days or two weeks out of every month) for decades. Like any other travel, it gets old. I've done LA to Europe, go to a 2 day meeting and then fly home a couple times. Not fun, but sometimes you need to be multiple places at once and they don't think you're high enough priority to use the transporter.

Some recent successes on a mini-mileage-run (used my birthday discount).

2/28/20 DEN-SEA AS653 75K, R-class, Upgrade cleared at T-30 hours
2/28/20 SEA-BOS AS24 75K, R-class, Upgrade cleared at T-60 hours

2/29/20 BOS-SEA AS15 75K, R-class, Upgrade cleared at T-110 hours
3/1/20 SEA-DEN AS672 75K, R-class, Upgrade cleared at T-50 hours

AS seems to run a sweep at approximately 4 a.m. (Mountain time) each morning. I received e-mail confirmations for each flight. DEN-SEA and SEA-DEN are Airbus flights which showed 8 seats, then 12 as presumably actual reconfigured aircraft are assigned to the flights.

Fort Lauderdale can be tough. We did not get LAX-FLL in November (and this was on an upgrade-at booking fare that wasn't inexpensive). It was an enjoyable flight in Premium anyway and the drinks were flowing freely at breakfast time. Return FLL-SFO cleared long before the trip.

Flying in PE on long hauls as a MM can actually be quite enjoyable . I had the same experience with my return getting upgraded quickly but not "long" before the trip - it was around 40-36 hrs or so.
