NZ135 16/8/18 - AKL-BNE 4 x PE to Business Premier at US$120 pp - again lucky with 4 passengers on one PNR - could it be that quite a few passengers flying in Y are looking for OneUps to PE? Wondering if we should try our luck on our way back?

NZ 5 coming up on 8/23. Bid USD 880 to go from PE -> J. Cleared five days out. No status on NZ. In retrospect probably could have gotten away with bidding lower, but still happy that it cleared.

Does ANZ assign seats when they approve an upgrade bid? Or, do you have to contact them? Do they seat two people together if seats are available.?

Depends when the upgrade is confirmed - not just a OneUp, but RU and APD upgrades are all the same.

If confirmed in advance you won't be allocated a seat and need to select this yourself. If an upgrade clears on the day after a flight has moved to airport control then a seat will be allocated automatically.

Flight was only 3/4 full in PE.

NZ7 SFO-AKL

Offered $350 Airpoints (Jade Status, so no uplift)
Was accepted immediately (3 days before flight)
PE was fairly full on this flight

AKL-LAX NZ6, 30 Aug 2018
No uplift (Koru only)
Y > PE NZ$400. confirmed 4 days out

Was a notch or two off the minimum, so seems like a good score, especially on a Global Saver fare :-)

I am trying to determine whether to bid from PE to business on a flight from sfo to akl. I can see there are 12 seats left on a 777/300. It would be for two people. Thinking if I did, I would have to make a higher bid. Thoughts.

It's not possible for you to know there are 12 seats free. The most you can see is how many seats NZ are still selling up to a total of 9 as that's the most they release at a time in GDS.

There is probably about a 95% likelihood of the BP cabin being totally full on that flight as that is the norm. If you don't bid however your chances of an upgrade are 0% - if you bid they're somewhere between 0% and 100%

Not to be on the return leg - 4 passengers on NZ136 25/8/2018 BNE - AUK and then NZ6 AUK - LAX, both booked PE and offered the same $$ as on the outbound - both unsuccessful. Flights were pretty full and we were not disappointed with PE. On NZ6, the crew were dressed as Disney characters as there was a 'Koru Cares' group of children flying to LAX!

As Mr Biddle pointed out, your chance of buying two BP seats is zero if you do not bid.
The value of the greater comfort and better experience is subjective.
I equate it to bidding on houses in foreclosure court. I bid the maximum amount that I feel comfortable paying whereby I have no buyers remorse and feel I received good value, but lower than where I am happy to walk away and have someone else be there.
Only you know what your number is!!

AKL to LHR via LAX
Y - PE $690 and $610 for each leg, still not accepted 3 days out.
Those bids sit just on 'average' scale (if that helps)

What do you think my chances are?
I really need the baggage allowance as im moving permanently

Who knows honestly. I've had all of my bids Y-PE accepted. I usually bidded around $600 and had gold uplift, which was probably pretty high. There is often a lot of PE availability but again, you just never know.

I wouldn't be counting on it for the luggage because you sometimes don't find out until you're literally boarding the plane... I also have no idea how that even works considering that they're separate flights, so if you win it for LAX leg but not the LHR leg are you entitled to the additional luggage for the LHR leg or do they charge you? I don't know.
