FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: tcook052
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition , 2017 edition and 2018 edition.

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues, status or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs, destinations, in-flight travel tech. or anything best discussed elsewhere on FT may be relocated to that forum as this thread isn't meant to import travel topics to this forum that are better discussed on other forums. FT is an amazingly diverse and large community so members are encouraged to seek out all of its resources.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

Sounds like companies in my industry (utilities) that get around the regulatory requirement for routable external connections to be firewalled and monitored by deliberately using serial on modern equipment, sometimes by slapping serial-to-Ethernet transceivers on stuff so the connection that 'leaves' the plant is serial. Completely missing the point of the security rules.

Aren't those all flavours of exotic Kit Kats?

If not, they should be!

Last year I had a medical facility insist they were in no way connected to the businesses in their building. Modems from separate ISPs separate locked offices. no wifi. They went as far as showing me that there was no server login, no domain trust, no fileshare. no patch cord between the two office switches.

So how did they share files on the same CT scanner? (which had records that the two companies could not legally access). Out via a secure VPN portal and back in to a filtered data set, like they told me and their security auditors? Nope.

I tracked down a former IT admin who sheepishly admitted he didn't know how to make his boss happy without breaking the rules. So he had bought a second $6 ethernet card for the CT scanner's PC and left it plugged it into *both* company's network switches.

I had to work through lunch and I’m now on my way to YOW. Sitting in the back of this Uber I was lamenting my lack of snacks.

Then I remembered the extra Kit Kats offered to me by the SD on Sunday pm.... so I would like to thank AC for keeping me from getting hangry in the Nexus line....

------

update:

There was no Nexus line. I had to go through screening with the normals. I also had to pull out a calculator to convert oz to mL so that they didn't take my shoe polish away. CATSA said I could go on the other side of the line, scoop out some product, and then come back through. But I held fast and I won.

Seriously? I thought the strict limit was size of the container regardless of emptiness! I’ve certainly had some close looks at my 100ml aftershave before but never had to get a calculator luckily.

I assume you're talking about something like Nokian WRG3s?

Around here they are awesome, but mine see snow only 10 times a year or so for drives over the mountains. I feel in control with them and they have good grip, but they aren't Blizzaks and I wouldn't run them if I lived somewhere that saw snow for weeks/months on end and had temperatures consistently at -15 or worse.

Yeah. Heard about them recently but they sound like it’s good for cold (at least normal YYZ temps) but not so much snow and packed ice.

I find them acceptable in snow but can’t comment on packed ice.

I have someone I can ask who is quite versed. Give me a day and I will PM you.

That is what the policy is... I shouldn’t be surprised I know the CATSA screening rules better than the screeners, but come on.

The lady two behind me in line applauded me for standing my ground lol

Mostly I was just barely on the other side of hangry and tired and the thought of buying more shoe polish this week felt like an insurmountable barrier.

Probably. I'm pretty sure there was an ample supply in my vegetable tempura and soba noodles.

But today (yesterday in NRT......time zone shift), they had a sushi station, with a chef making it and the line up went all the way down past those amusing beer machines.

Er, that would have been approx 20 hours ago.

But, I noticed they have a new flavour and new packaging designs.
