FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: jc94
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition and 2017 edition

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

3. They seemed serious about getting me to tell my references that they WOULD be contacted today. I'm glad my guarantor was with me, as we were able to skip that phone call. I don't think I've ever had a reference called for a regular renewal though, and given that I actually had the old (damaged) passport, I'm hoping they skip the formalities (in case one of the references isn't available in such a short window). I am who I say I am, I swear
I had a 3 month tax delay because I was given the wrong version of a form once. Never trust finance departments.

That's very quick on a turn-around. I've always had to leave these sort of things (including quick turn visas) at least one night.

I knew they could do "end of next business day", which is why I'm booked on the 1845 YYZ-SFO on Monday. But I'd much rather be back in SFO by Monday morning, and she suggested it.

In retrospect, I really lucked out by choosing engineering for undergrad rather than pure science. In high school I thought I wanted to do research, but by 3rd year university I'd had quite enough of full-time education. Being in engineering allowed me to do co-op to pay for my degree and walk away with a BASc that got me a pretty good job. I don't harbour any illusions about being "passionate" about my work but it's well-paid and low stress with a good work/life balance and that's more than enough for me.

Sometimes doing the right thing has its costs.
$4520 USD worth of shares just appeared on my brokerage account for no reason, I decided to inform BMO after two days and these guys said thanks but now I have to spend good hour or two migrating my account and relink everything again(more phone calls ayee) because reversing this transaction would mean my private info would be displayed to the other party.

No comps offered, ofc. Might even come back and bite me in the bottom next tax season if this shows up as a trade lol

Oh so it's from 12:45 one day to 3:30 the next? And business day, that's not as good.

No good deed. Surely unless you were to sell them it won't appear or need listing? I worry when banks have this sort of thing happen, if I was missing $4520 USD as someone presumably is I'd not be happy. I'm already not happy with the time it takes RRSP companies to move money around. "[the move] takes up to a couple of weeks". Erm no, it doesn't.

It's because of this sort of inefficient customer service from companies I've actually come out on top. If I spent an hour with them to resolve the issue and come out a few dollars on top, well that's the fee for me having to spend an hour sorting out their error.

No, I dropped off the application at 1245. They called a reference at 1455. I had the passport in my hand at 1540.

Less than 3 hours total. They ADVERTISE "end of next business day", but they can definitely do better.

It means I can try to move my flight from Monday to Sunday. EF alerts are set.

Document well, request documentation from bank. Shouldn't need to put it in your tax filing as it is a bad trade.

I once had 9 digit cash balance show up in one of the work accounts on a Friday. I called, asked what's up, they didn't know and it stayed in there until Monday, so we got 3 days interest (this was pre 2008 so interest was non-trivial). We had a nice "summer party" for the office on that money.
