FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: jc94
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition and 2017 edition

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

If you look at the fine print in the pic, the ad appears to be from one of those student loan refi startups -- e.g. in the bay area, there are ads everywhere for SoFi that does the same thing

Why people go into massive debt to get a BA in basketweaving is something I don't think I will ever understand -- doubly so for those who do it AND move to sillycon valley wondering why they can't afford a place to live

There are over 12K undergrads in BA at UBC... for how many jobs? These guys have no problem taking in as much BAs as possible by having massive lectures and online sections.
Canadian University have failed again and again to expand their COMP SCI programs, waiting list is insane with high bars that eliminate many students off the bat in year 1.

I barely managed to complete my BTM as my 2nd specialization and had to be ranked in the top 12-10% of my school to get into those classes.

I don't know about UBC, but from what I understand of my former school (U of T) most of the enrollment growth over the last ~5 years is from international students and the primary draw is getting Canadian PR/eventual citizenship. That's a reasonable investment even for the eye-popping $50,000/year they charge.

I know for a fact (at least during 2016) that U of T directly recruits in Chinese high schools. But mostly were to fill UTM and UTSC, not UTSG.
UBC took a step further, creating "Vintage College" for their new found cash-cows.

It's a free market. People should be able to spend what they want to get what they want. Most people know that their employability with a BA is poor from the get go. And for those that don't' - it's a "welcome to life" adulting moment.

With public funding of universities at "about 50%" (which could be 20-80% for all I know), it isn't entirely fair to say it's a free market. If as a society we are pumping, say, $50k into people between 18-25 for an experience, then they could be experiencing learning TIG welding, or park trail maintenance, or Dockerfile Kubernetes writing. Society could get something back from that $50k

Why is it that every time I buy a new car I carefully put all the information in a file for future reference, and 4 years later when I go to trade the car in none of the information can be found????

Did you move in the last 4 years?

The house where I currently live is the place where I have lived the longest stretch of my life — 7 years. I find that my personal archives pretty much last as long as I stay in the same place. As such, I have never had a drawer as full of papers than I do now.

Perhaps it’s a sign that I should move and throw everything in the recycling bin!

Haven't moved in 18 years, but my search has resulted in a massive pile of papers that I am now taking to the shredder at my office.

Oh, and I found the file! Mrs Yhztraveller had filed it in a safe place place....
