FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: jc94
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition and 2017 edition

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

I think irrational security requirements and unexplained delays also hold true The above seem more AC specific

And add in Rougification.

Looks like 2018 might be the year I buy a small apartment in YYJ for about $750k. Tired of my landlords kicking me out to cash out. The question is will a market correction wipe out my down payment? Should I just pickup a cheap place close to the airport and learn to cook?

Definitely learn to cook. The average meal costs me 60¢ (per serving) in ingredients + 45 minutes in cooking + 5-10 in cleaning. Way cheaper than eating out, especially when you cook multiple servings at once

I’ve lived real cheap but short of a jacket potato without a filling or a bowl of plain oatmeal I’m not sure how this is possible.

The closest thing I can think of around 60c I buy is a bunch of spring onions. Definitely not a meal.

Feeling a little under the weather (hence why I took a 789 home this morning instead of a 320 later). So I made some tea.

An hour of my time is worth way more than $20, which would get me a very reasonable meal.

Soylent is even cheaper and faster.

I do have some cooking skills. I just enjoy the pub lifestyle afforded by living in a highly walkable location.

That being said when I do cook, I enjoy dry aged steak, live crab, things like that. Usually costs about the same as hitting the pub.

While I enjoy Suchi, I prefer my crab dead when I eat it. But each to their own.

If you are going to consider buying a home, now is a relatively good time to buy given the many recent changes in mortgage stress testing, and Federal legislation changes. That said, please keep in mind there are a few costs that you need to consider that do not apply to renters.

1) Property insurance can be much more than tenant insurance
2) It appears to me you are a frequent flier. Someone should take a look at your home every once in a while

That said, have you considered renewing a longer term lease than defaulting to a month to month after the first year has passed?

Doesn't pewpew still live in Europe. I was amazed how much cheaper groceries were when I was in the Netherlands a couple of years ago.

Any chance of telecommuting and living in rural/small town Nova Scotia? I know someone (not me) who is trying to sell a house in Springhill. It's beautiful inside, though at $139,900 it is one of the most expensive houses in that town.

The difference in housing prices across this country never ceases to amaze me. I guess it costs a lot more to buy a place where people actually want to live. Good job opportunities help too.
