A330-300 Fleet Overview

AC currently has two configurations of 333:
  • Dream Cabin (16 aircraft): Latest 3-class configuration in line with the 787 and 777 fleets (seat map)
  • The "Merlions" (2 aircraft): ex-Singapore Airlines 2-class configuration (seat map), which are expected to be reconfigured to the Dream Cabin.
    • Important note: the front cabin on these aircraft is an angle-flat product in a 2-2-2 layout that was SQ's "regional" business class. On flights within North America, AC sells it as J; on international flights, they sell it as PY. These aircraft do not have the standard AC PY cabin
    • Since October 2023, these aircraft primarily operate YYZ>BOG>YUL triangle, and YUL<>LAX.

So my flight from YYZ to BOG and back in March 2023 switched from new pod to classic pod on the seat selection page this early. I have a feeling AC might be doing this now so they don't oversell. Although my row 8 seats stayed and didn't downgrade yet, who knows, as it was showing full on both flights a few weeks ago.

I ended up on the refurbished bird but I have to say, the seat is tight and the storage space sucks compared to 787 and 777. Still better than XM but I definitely noticed the seat difference and found it less comfortable to sleep.

Your comments are similar to experience of many others on the refurbished A330's. It is a less comfortable seat because of the narrow fuselage.

I was on one of these last week and the most unusual thing for me was the shoulder belt in J. I am not sure what the point of that is when every other seat on the A330 and the rest of the fleet gets away without one.

In a pod, you either need an airbag or a shoulder strap (for takeoff and landing). The airbag tends to get in the way a lot more during flight, so I prefer the strap.

Looks like FIN938 has been flown to HKG. If its there to get the cabin refurbished that will leave FIN931 as the only one still in the old configuration.

I see it the other way. I know I'm in the minority but I prefer the old Blue pod vs the new 333 pod. For whatever reason I just find it more comfortable.

I know the in-flight is crappy comparatively but the only thing I ever watch on the IFE system is the Map.

I'm guessing this is very tentative. Would expect that the 330 Refurb project will be complete by then, and if the sole fin is still flying, will be relegated (where possible) to domestic runs (YYC, YVR, etc). Have flown the 330 regularly for months and have not seen the classic on any International run.

The penny dropped ... so that bulky seat belt is a mini-airbag? I sort of wondered why it was like it is
How does it know when to deploy and how big is it when deployed?
I also prefer the shoulder strap as on other planes (eg QF A350)

they have existed for almost 2 decades for as far as I can remember or maybe longer.
I remember having those on the bulkhead seat and second row the economy that's sticking out on the aisle on the A340-500 back in 2005

presumably it's to prevent you from smacking your head on the bulkhead or side the the business class shell (I suppose they cause more damage than the AVOD screen).

Fortunately I don't think there had been any real life examples of its effectiveness, many have moved away to 3 points harness instead which is probably less costly than having those explosive in the seatbelt that may or may not work.

My YYZ-YVR tomorrow is on 931. J and PY are fully (probably over) booked as the previous config was the new one. There's a new A330 flying to YYC within the hour - any odds of the planes being switched? That flight seems to be quite empty with a tiny upgrade list.

edit - today, it's late

LIS-YUL October 13th Changed to Old Config

I just received notification that our seats were changed as the October 13th flight from LIS to YUL was changed to the old configuration. As we’re still more than a week out, could it changed back in anyone’s experience?

Funny enough, our YUL to LAX is still showing the new config seat map, so at least we should get the better seats on that portion of our trip.

Had a notification yesterday morning as well on my PY seat selection, and I was able to switch back.

C-GHLM (938) just arrived in HKG. Hopefully this time it’s going for it’s refurb now that the summer season is over.
