A330-300 Fleet Overview

AC currently has two configurations of 333:
  • Dream Cabin (16 aircraft): Latest 3-class configuration in line with the 787 and 777 fleets (seat map)
  • The "Merlions" (2 aircraft): ex-Singapore Airlines 2-class configuration (seat map), which are expected to be reconfigured to the Dream Cabin.
    • Important note: the front cabin on these aircraft is an angle-flat product in a 2-2-2 layout that was SQ's "regional" business class. On flights within North America, AC sells it as J; on international flights, they sell it as PY. These aircraft do not have the standard AC PY cabin
    • Since October 2023, these aircraft primarily operate YYZ>BOG>YUL triangle, and YUL<>LAX.

Air Canada Airbus A330-300 refurbishments

With the 777 reconfig almost done, does this mean that the A330's will start getting PE seating soon? It was announced at the same time as the 777 reconfig, though from the press release it sounded like it would happen after the 777's were done.

According to the contractor, the work will begin in Q3, and that could be as early as 6 weeks from now. Though I imagine that they won't start until after the summer busy season.

They said that the Y cabin would be enlarged, and I can just imagine them sliding the Y's back an inch or two to create a couple more rows of preferred Y. I hope that doesn't happen, at least not until after I fly YUL-BRU in August.

The press release also mentions integrating the IFE system. Would that mean no more legroom killing AV boxes under certain seats?

This seems to suggest replacing the existing Y seats, with the new slimline bum numbing variety …

Coming soon, A330 Epic Fail
Coming in 2019 737 Max Epic Fail

Looks like even YVR-YUL is no longer safe

Other reports said that the Y and J cabins would be untouched. Anyone have knowledge of what will really happen?

It's actually in the Press Release you linked to:

Air Canada will also reconfigure its fleet of eight Airbus A330-300 aircraft to offer customers the option of its new Premium Economy cabin. The current Economy and International Business Class cabins of its A330-300 fleet will remain unchanged.
From their Q4 2015 MD&A:

Conversion of the Airbus A330 aircraft is expected to begin in the second half of 2016 for
completion during the first quarter of 2017

So the question is, is AC going to remove J seats to make space for PY seats, or remove Y seats?

Their strategic plan disclosed that the A333 will go from 265 seats to 292. I can't see that happening without reducing pitch in Y.

It has been rumored that the mini J cabin (which holds 10 J seats) will be reconfigured to PY, most likely 21 seats like the 787 PY cabins. But that would only take you to 276 seats. So you need to gain an additional 16 seats in Y, two full rows, either by reducing seat pitch or by going with slimline seats. There are 30 Y rows so I guess you could take out 2" of pitch per row to squeeze in two additional rows. But that would take you to ACr-type seat pitch.

I bet they squeeze pitch to 31-32" and remove 1 or 2 lavs.

would that also not be the 788/789 pitch? roughly?

Not according to the AC website. 788/789 has a reported seat pitch of 31" and 333 is 31-33" depending on the row. I guess if they put all rows at 31" and mess around with the lavs, it could work. ACr 767 has a reported seat pitch of 30".

I will miss those 33" pitch rows on the 333!

Yes, but with slimline seats. With regular old-style seats, 30-31" pitch would be equal to the A319 Rouge experience. Great for transatlantic flights!

I'm betting that they remove the second J cabin and possibly the lav, galley and closet after the #2R door and replace with three rows of PE and 2 rows of Y. This would allow them to leave the rest of the J and Y cabins intact.

That would still leave them with 8 lavs - same number as on the 77L seating 300.

By turning the lavs into PY seats? Or installing a PY seat in the galley?
