I couldn't believe Autralia / NZ - (SIN) - NRT - NA does not work, if it is true it is new and a shame, because it was the only way to fly NZ J (AKL-NRT-NA), as there is no J seat on AKL-NA direct (except Hawaii but it is old 763 planes).

Yeah, I'm surprised too. AKL-NRT-ORD-YYZ does not work.

Buying ORD-YYZ on an open jaw SYD/BNE ticket doesn't work either.

So it looks like, tentatively I'll do the following:

YYZ-IST AC J (stop)
IST-SIN SQ J
SIN-SYD SQ J
BNE-SIN SQ J
SIN-TPE SQ J
TPE-YYZ BR J

I ran into problems trying to get SIN and NRT on one ticket. BNE-NRT-YYZ is acceptable, only because NRT-YYZ is direct and no SIN in there.

EDIT: AKL-NRT-YYZ is acceptable. NRT-YYZ must be direct though.

I take it there is no LX from YUL or BOS to cut out the charges TATL (or LO to lower them)

Anyway with LX or LO it won't work.
There is no published itinerary from NA to SYD via SIN with more than one stop in Europe. They refused me a YUL-ZRH-IST-SIN-Anything in Australia or NZ 2 months ago...

Online engine allows me to book YYZ-WAW-IST (stop) -SIN-SYD for the outbound leg. Only thing is it leaves 2 days later.

Does booking that have any impact on the return flights?

For Australia and New Zealand, in my limited experience, I have done these:

YYZ-FRA-ZRH-BKK-SYD
YYZ-YUL-ZRH-BKK-SYD
YYZ-NRT-ICN-SYD
YYZ-NRT-HKG-BKK-MEL
YYZ-HKG-SIN-PER
YYZ-NRT-HKG-SIN-PER
YYZ-SYD-AKL
YYZ-NRT-KIX-AKL

YMMV, but I don't care about AC scamcharges. I just want to take the most direct route, the stops/connections are all legitimate stops that I would take advantage of. I hate taking tours of airports and lounges.

FWIW, this is what I booked about a week ago:

BNE»TPE»YYZ (destination)
YYZ»FRA»TXL (stop)
TXL»IST»SIN»BNE

All in J

Could also have booked TXL»CPH»SIN»BNE

All online FWIW. But not bookable online if you start/end in YYZ. Everything down there I have either booked from there, or was using USDM.

Given that SYD is your destination, I can't see why. But only one real way of finding out.

As well, to check LX routing, once I know it exists (by starting from YUL), I plug it into the system as from YTZ, which is good at routing on LX.

According to the online search:

SYD-ICN-ORD-YYZ is valid (OZ/OZ/UA)

SYD-SIN-NRT-YYZ not valid
SYD-SIN-TPE-YYZ not valid

Running through SIN and another Asian hub is where problems seem to happen.

So the only feasible options for my dates would now seem to be:

SYD-ICN-ORD-YYZ (OZ/OZ/UA)
BNE-SIN-TPE-YYZ (SQ/SQ/BR)

Got some thinking to do which I would prefer. 2 long hauls on OZ or 2 regionals on SQ and long haul on BR

Guess I did repeat myself! Sorry to clutter up this read, but hopefully it will be useful for anyone who tries to pull off the coveted YYZ-SYD mini-RTW.

SYD-PEK-YYZ also works (but any connection via the US doesn't work). Moral of the story is that to route through Asia, finding a direct flight to/from the city you want to transit is vital.

Can one fly to AKL from NA via europe+asia? Or is it only SYD|MEL|BNE that this works for...

I guess another option is to start\finish in the states or to stack with a paid positioning flight.... It will be damn hard to get that AKL-NRT-NA without being forced to hand out a ton of cash to AC.

Just tried it out:

Ran into problems with ORD-IST-SYD and JFK-IST-SYD (had no problems inputting YYZ-IST-SYD to get the YYZ-WAW-IST-SIN-SYD routing.)

But was able to do:
SYD-SIN-NRT-SEA-ORD without issue (SQ/NH/NH/UA)

Just got off the phone again:

PER-SIN-NRT-IAD-YYZ is valid! (SQ/NH/NH/UA). SIN-NRT is on the new 787, but IAD-YYZ is in Y. I think this routing is worth it to try out NH 787 and TPAC.
