Considering the number of questions on MPM, here is some general reading on them.

http://demo1.nkuht.edu.tw/~t0259/abt/MPMBOOK.pdf

Added this to the FAQ thread's wiki, too. Should help people trying to understand the concept.

No discretion. The only way to get a >24 hour connection is if the next flight onwards that you can reach taking into account MCT is more than 24 hours away.

Can you artificially manufacture this situation? For example, I want to go YVR-YUL-IST and spend more than 24 hours at YUL. The YUL-IST flight is not daily, it only operates Tue, Fri, Sun. I could go on a Friday, and just connect YVR-YUL-IST. Or, I could go YVR-YUL on a Saturday, then there is no connecting flight same day, and the next day Sunday flight is more than 24 hours after arrival at YUL. Will Aeroplan agents let me book it and not count as a stopover (for example, on a one-way award), because technically there are no flights within the next 24 hours, and I am really taking the next scheduled flight to IST after arrival at YUL? Or, will they tell me to book the YVR-YUL on Sunday as well, so that the connection is less than 24 hours?

The only way that you can force >24h is if there is NO way of getting there, not no space on your preferred, direct, YQ free, flight. If there is space on YUL-YYZ-IST with AC, YUL-YYZ-FRA-IST etc then that is considered the next available flight. And even if you have a J ticket, if there is space on some expensive YQ all Y route they would still not give you >24h in YUL.

Thanks for your insights. I'm still not sure why MEL is no good, as I'm still not fluent enough with this stuff , but I'll take your word(s) on this.

Moving on, I'm trying to figure out next year's MRTW and would appreciate some quick Y/N's.

Is it possible to create a MRTW ex-YYZ, with stops in:
- AKL/SYD/HKG
or
- AKL/SYD/SIN.

I believe SYD is the POT (farther from YYZ than AKL), but after roaming through the various RTW threads I haven't seen any examples that include the above stopovers. Is it because it's just not possible? Appreciate your patience.

MEL is further from YYZ than SYD is from YYZ, so if MEL is a stop, it becomes your POT.
The reason you can have that crazy long routing from SYD-YYZ is that the MPM for SYD-YYZ over the Atlantic is, for some unknown reason, 20,000 miles. There's no MPM over the Atlantic for MEL-YYZ.

Need help with A3 booking - Aeroplan only shows 180 days, ANA showing up to next Feb - obviously I'd like to book a trip for next May ASAP (like July?).

Do Aeroplan agents see A3 availability past 180 days?

Looking for ATH-JTR and vice versa, and ATH-FCO

I think Aeroplan agents see exactly the same as online availability

Wow, 180 days out is harsh, by that time, all other carriers' inventories will all be booked already (e.g. AC releasing 355 days out, UA ~330, etc...)

I was looking for May 2015 to Europe, and nothing good/interesting will show until June 2014 probably
I can see UA/TK into April 2015 but no J at all, sigh

So if I want to take the following route...should my destination/turn over point be HKG even though SIN is further? And does this itinerary meet all rules?

SEA-TXL (stop in Berlin)
TXL-IST (1 day in Istanbul)
IST-BKK (stop in Bangkok)
BKK-SIN (1 day in Singapore)
HKG-SEA (stop in Hong kong, then back to SEA)

In order to confirm whether award seats are available, should I be checking on aeroplan.com? I looked on ANA but aren't they just regular flight schedule?

Thanks!!!

BKK, because you use the shortest distance for each destination to compare, not the longest.

Otherwise you'd end up saying SEA-HNL is longer over the Atlantic than SEA-SIN

Ok thank you!! so...if I use BKK as my turnaround point then my itinerary is valid?

And I should be checking on aeroplan.com for reward seat availability?

Yes, BKK is your turnaround. You can use aeroplan or ana or united to search space
