Sure they are (minus the 20 euro fee per ticket of course).
If flights get cancelled you certainly have a few options regardless.
But if it's you who decide not to travel, then splitting this into a one-way full award tickets and the other way full revenue tickets doesn't make much difference than having 2 returns as awards and 1 return as revenue. It probably gives you some flexibility in the scenario that the airline changes only your revenue flight, so you can be more flexible with the separate award one-way booking. But, again, if you have that single return revenue ticket in one booking and one flight gets changed/cancelled, you should still be able to change the other flight too (at least that's what I believe, since your whole booking gets screwed and you would have the other leg in the same booking as well). Also, by booking the award flights as two pairs of return flights, you would save 2x that 20 euro fee if you need to cancel everything.
If you're too worried about current or future conditions, I'd look into possible "fail-safes" for that revenue ticket first, perhaps try to see if there's any "insurance" option that doesn't cost much, in case the revenue ticket (which would be a return ticket) needs to get refunded and then if possible book as many tickets with miles (also as returns).

People who haven't booked using A3 miles sometimes overlook that A3 limits you to one connection on award flights. Even Europe-based folks who use A3 regularly can miss that, it's not too hard to get one-stop itineraries you want if you're already in Europe. Itineraries with more than one connection don't show because they can't be booked.

I ran into it myself several years ago trying to book from Longyearbyen to Athens, we could only get to Zurich. LYR-OSL counted as one flight despite the stop in Tromso (same flight # all the way), OSL was the connection, and OSL-ZRH was the second leg. (We overnighted there & took paid flights ZRH-ATH. Economy upgraded to Biz with coupons, of course.)

Archon1995 sorry, what you wrote is not correct! 3-segment itineraries can be booked with Aegean miles and they do show up when the search engine is working properly and there aren't enough direct or one-stop connections for an itinerary. Of course the booking system will probably not let you book any 3-segment connection you want between any and all possible airports worldwide, but the catalog is certainly quite long.
I don't know how it was about 5 years ago or earlier, but I have booked a 3-segment ticket myself in 2019!
The only catch is, that Aegean makes you "pay" the miles for a two-segment and a single-segment itineraries combined, because of a correlated restriction in the miles&bonus program. But they are bookable! I even got it to book a three-segment itinerary and charge me for all 3 segments that time, because of the mixed cabin restriction/rule (it was a combination of business class, then first, then business class flights). But, even in hindsight, those were some extremely well-invested 121.000 miles! (actually 242k, since my wife came along )

Very good, thank you. Yes, it was in 2013, though I've never found one through searching since. I do recall the one connection/two segment limit was in place (and that it was discussed here more recently than 2013), and assumed it wasn't available so never considered calling up to see about booking a three segment award.

Now I'm re-thinking possibilities for future travel...

Just for clarification, you can book such connections online as well. Here's an example from later this month, where despite having both the 3-segment and the mixed cabin issues (the long-haul is in business class) it actually only charges the lowest possible amount of miles, combining the first two economy flights together for 15k and then the business class for 55k.

Three-segment itinerary bookable online.
Also for full disclosure, the ticket I mentioned before, with the 242k miles, were actually 2 tickets booked separately as a 2-seg and 1-seg (I thought it was a single booking, because Thai Airways took care of that "connection" back then, but as you see, such connections can be booked, at least sometimes, and perhaps the call center will be able to see and book even more of them, in fact, I'll spare you the screenshot, but there currently about 25 (!!!) different 3-segment combinations that appear online for an Athens-Dusseldorf itinerary on January 17th, most of which are bookable in one or both classes).

I was able to get an AC I class ticket reserved, but there is no ticket numbers. In the confirmation email, there is a warning:

Your reservation has been confirmed, but there was an error when trying to issue the ticket(s). In order to get your ticket number(s), please contact our Reservations Department at +30 210 6261000.

I called and they said that they will ticket next day. Seems not like the norm previously. Do I need to worry?

Thanks

Hello everyone!

Quick question, anybody else notice the change on award tickets from A3's website?

I am based in Milano, and I've flown in the past from MXP to various destinations in North America using either direct flights using UA or LH & UA.

Looking into future dates, i see that flights that were previously there have disappeared and the options you are given almost always include some A3 flight from MXP to ATH and then to another European hub , BEFORE connecting to flights bound to NA.

For instance, flights previously from MXP to FRA and then ORD, now either have vanished or are routed from MXP to ATH to ZRH to ORD, with much fewer options & a penalty in miles! What was once a 35K mile ticket, is now easily almost double that!

I called them, they said maybe seating is limited, but i suspect BS. Even if there were NO seats available you could at least see the whole schedule.

Penny for your thoughts?

Thanks!

/George

@ George: If you read the last 10 posts or so, you'll see quite a few mentions of this issue (which exists since black Friday). I contacted Aegean again this week and the agent that received and replied to my previous message wrote me back, that they still have no update from the appropriate department regarding fixing the website/app award search. I then responded to that reply, that they need to remind the people in that department about the issue again, because since (like in George's case) many call center agents do give us the complete BS of "reduced award availability", the fact that for some routes the search does return results with connecting flights (like, or almost like before the issues began) could have someone in that "department" performing a check believing, that there isn't any issue at all (and consequently not apply any fixes and perhaps not even inform anyone, that they didn't do anything). The fact that the search was working like before temporarily on December 1st makes it in my opinion simply ridiculous, that they haven't fixed it yet, after nearly 2 weeks of problems. Even if they had to re-program the entire award engine it wouldn't take that long.

Thank you for the info Giorginho, i also suspected an IT issue, and hopefully, it's just that.

What I fear though is them pulling a new "policy change" BS rule on us and making the award flights program pretty much useless for the A3 members.

I also opened a case through my account, as soon as I get some feedback I'll report back!

I got another reply-confirmation today that they are fixing this... I think the only concerning thing is, that they devaluated the program precisely on black friday 2 years ago, but other than that, I don't think any major change is coming (like them not offering *A awards any more, which would only mean that Aegean would have to exit the alliance).

Giorginho, can you please verify that someone from Aegean reached out to you and acknowledged the issue in hand?

I received a response today to the ticket i raised through their portal with the same BS about flights availability etc etc. The A3 awards program is completely useless in this state, and i want to understand if they are going to do something to fix it, or i should move my business over to another carrier via status match.

Regards,

George

Hi George, I already wrote here that Aegean reached back to me to inform me that they have aknowledged it and are working to fix it. I don't quite understand how I could verify what I already wrote even more... .
If you know what you want to book, you can call and book without the service fee.
