Novotel Shenzhen Watergate

- Name of the hotel: Novotel Shenzhen Watergate

- What is your Le Club status? Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?

Oh yes. The service was better, the room was better, this was what I expected from a Novotel and the kind of hotel I expected when I went to Osaka.

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Booked a Standard one-bed room, received a Superior one-bed room.

- How are the rooms?

Clean, spacious, and quiet despite facing what seemed to be a main street close to the HK border.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:

More AC outlets. I could plug all my things in.

Bathroom was nicer-looking in general, amenities were individual bottles instead of the large wall dispenser used in Osaka.

No language issues at check-in, got complimentary breakfast, welcome drink voucher, and up to 5PM late checkout (actually left at 3PM, which was kind of pushing it for a 7PM flight out of HKG given the construction at the intersection the hotel was located on as well as the border checkpoint).

The breakfast was a pretty decent selection. There was the usual western-style with a selection of pastries as well, and the Chinese section was also pretty good.

Bad:

Distance-wise it's not far from the metro station at all, but construction at the moment makes it a bit of a journey involving a couple of flights of stairs. If you've got bulky bags, just take a taxi.

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge?

N/A (no lounge)

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?

Oh yes. Next time though I'll be mindful of the time if I'm using it as a substitute to staying in Hong Kong itself for an HKG flight the next day.

Novotel Taipei Taoyuan Airport

- Name of the hotel: Novotel Taipei Taoyuan Airport

- What is your Le Club status?

Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?

Absolutely.

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Booked a standard and got upgraded to a club-level room.

- How are the rooms?

Very spacious, very clean, plenty of AC outlets to go around. The panda was an interesting touch.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:

Clean, modern-looking bathroom

Benefits were more than I'd received elsewhere- NT$500 spa voucher on top of breakfast, welcome drink coupon, and room upgrade

Ended up receiving free breakfast in the main restaurant as well as at the lounge as part of the room upgrade

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge?

Yes. Lounge was quite nice in the morning- small-ish but workable breakfast selection and spacious. Didn't go in the afternoon

- Value for $ or Vouchers?

On an advance purchase rate like this time, absolutely worth having to take the bus+HSR into town and back every day. Last-minute unrestricted rate, worth it to be next to the airport.

- Name of the hotel:
Pullman G Bangkok

- What is your Le Club status?
Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?

Oh yes. Best Accor property I have stayed in to date. Very attentive and welcoming staff.

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Booked G Deluxe. Which is essentially a Deluxe room on higher floor and with iPod dock. Upgraded to Executive floor, which is from 27-35 floor.

- How are the rooms?

Clean, spacious, modern and well maintained. Love the Roger & Gallent toiletries. Expresso machine and large LCD TV in the room. Good floor to ceiling glass windows.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:

Very modern and chic room. Luggage taken when we stepped out of the cab. Escorted to lounge for check in. Drinks and towels while we waited. Escorted to room and the luggage was sent up very quickly. Welcome gift of a Le Club luggage tag and M&M in a sardine can looking container. (Guess that's artsy?)

Drinks voucher given for the lobby bar (Playground) or the restaurant on the 37th floor (2 star michelin apparently). Drank at the lobby bar given that all I had was slippers and shorts. Extensive drink list in Playground. Wasn't told of any drinks restrictions. Champagne (for those sold by the glass) was offered too. Didn't ask as I am not a whisky fan, but I assumed that the 8000thb one shot super premium whisky was off limits for voucher use. Ordered 2 cocktails and they were both a very generous serving.

Late check-out at 4pm was granted without batting an eyelid.

Bad:

The 2 power plugs at desk are the only easily accessible ones, but they are placed too close together, so only 1 could be used.

Its a 10min walk to the BTS skytrain. Might bother some.

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge?

Yes. Table service for all the drinks except wines, which theoretically should be table service but it was left out for those who wanted to pour themselves a glass. Decent selection of drinks and cocktails. The food selection was small but delicious. Pork Satay, Samosa, Prawn Cocktail, Mussel Cocktail, Cheese selection, Salmon Quiche. The lounge is not big, but was just 70% occupied. Service is a little slow with 2 servers only until a third joined halfway. Great views from the 27th floor lounge.

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?

Definitely

- Name of the hotel: Novotel Panama City

- What is your Le Club status?
Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? Mixed, see issues below

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked 2 twin superior rooms. Received no rooms as they oversold!

- How are the rooms? Unsure

Good: So after the mess and me asking how they oversell and NOT hold the rooms for platinum members, they said they would put us up in the Royal Sonesta hotel, which is close to Novotel. This hotel is fantastic and seems very new. Rooftop pool on the 27th floor. They honored the same rate as Novotel, but we got breakfast also from Royal Sonesta! Great new gym and full sauna/steam room/turkish baths too here. Staff are very nice. The manager came and found us one day to ask how our stay was and if we were happier to be staying here than moving back to Novotel - we are staying here for the whole time now

Bad: Well the whole overall mess. Also the support for accor is quite poor, they kept on stating to me on the phone that I had a confirmed reservation when I explained the issue that there were no rooms left. They also followed up with an equally poor email, which had the wrong details of my reservation.

Will follow up with corporate/management when I leave Panama

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? n/a

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? The Novotel rate in the Royal Sonesta is amazing value. I would come to this hotel if in Panama City again!

Novotel Cha Am Beach Resort Thailand

- Name of the hotel:
Novotel Cha Am Beach resort

-What is your Le Club status?
Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Deluxe, got suite

- How are the rooms?
Old property, thus rooms and main building somewhat run down but acceptable, not 4* but very decent 3*
On the positive side plenty of power outlets and light switches to control lights, good double aircon controls, nice sea view and mountains (only the 34 suites have also mountain view)
Two flat panel TV's

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:
Huge swimming pool with very big children's area and huge slider.
Kids corner with 3-5 area and playing area for bigger kids, no staff supervising though.
Lobby is virtually at level 2, open on both sides (sea and land) half the time an agreeable breeze flows through the area, idem for the breakfast area at level 3. Brilliant architect design.
Good seaside restaurant with decent prices. Fridays is Thai food buffet for 500 THB/pp. Living in Thailand for 13 years I must qualify this Thai food buffet as #1.
Swimming pool is 100m walk from building and a nice covered walkway leads there protecting you from sun and rain (luckily no rain for us in July).
Mini markt at 100m from hotel building and some nearby restaurants/eateries and shops.
Complementary wifi through strange box you need to connect, no speed problems, do need to log in every 24h tough.

Bad:

Old hotel casting some negative, not 4* property.
Bad smell from a dead canal somewhere halfway to the pool
Abandoned tennis field and parking lot is a sore eye.
Property is 20kms from Hua Hin and 10kms from Cha Am, if you come without car you will have transportation problems. Hotel has free mini bus to/from HH several times a day though.
Access from Bangkok by road is horrendous (Thais are terrible drivers), train would be better option, no scheduled planes to Hua Hin airport.
Hotel will be fully booked (and somewhat overcrowded) on w.e. as whole of Cha Am Hua Hin area 2h drive from Bangkok

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge?
No have...

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?
Excellent value booked with 40% discount, at normal prices still good deal.

Sofitel London Gatwick

- What is your Le Club status?
Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Booked standard, upgraded to a club room

- How are the rooms?
Very nice if a bit smaller than might have expected

- What was good and what was bad?

Good: Recognition of Status - proactive upgrade , drinks vouchers (which we ended up not using), fruit plate, complimentary water, free mini bar (with wine, beer, water and other soft drinks and pringles)

Bad: Nothing

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge?
Lounge was great, canapes and drinks in the evening (enough so the sandwiches had bought for dinner were not eaten till lunch the following day!) and breakfast in the morning, lounge was smaller than expected but apart from that was very nice

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?
I paid points but would return again regardless

Ibis Carlisle

- Name of the hotel: Ibis Carlisle

- What is your Le Club status? Gold

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? Yes

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? Standard and got standard.

- How are the rooms? Fine, normal Ibis rooms.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good: Free drinks voucher. Got checked in slightly early as receptionist checked with housekeeping to see what rooms had been cleaned. Basically in centre of Carlisle so close to bars etc.

Bad: Some dozy pillock while having problems with reversing sensors hit a stationary coach at low speed after checking out. Yep me. Basically in centre of Carlisle so too close to bars...was noisy but i usually sleep with window open. Best to tey for car park side.

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? N/A

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? £25 monday madness rate - mad not to take that.

Novotel Newcastle Airport

- Name of the hotel: Novotel Newcastle Airport

- What is your Le Club status? Gold

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? Yes

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? Superior and got Superior

- How are the rooms? Fine, though i may actually prefer the standard but superior slightly more modern.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good: Free drinks voucher. Staff as good as always. Food top notch, chef is Indian (or close by) which means Indian food appears on the main printed menu and is bloody good.

Bad: No upgrade, ironically as a test i decided to go Superior (well when i say i did, work were paying for it...) to see if i would get upgraded to Executive (to see if the lounge actually exists). Didn't work...booked into Superior again, so may check to see if Exec rooms still available whilst parking car and ask next time. Breakfast a bit chaotic for first time ever (regular hotel for me). Plenty of staff around but not checking what was running out quick enough so delays in some of the hot food being out, was quiet when i turned up and got very busy so hate to think what wasn't there fifteen minutes later.

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? Still waiting to find out...

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return? Yes £84 half board.

Mercure Bloomsbury London

- Name of the hotel: Mercure Bloomsbury London

- What is your Le Club status? Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? Yes

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Booked Standard, Upgraded to Superior.

- How are the rooms?

- Modern, clean, quite spacious for London.

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:

- Location, Location, Location - 10 mins to Totttenham Court Road / 10 mins to Kings Cross. Go out on a night and walk back to the hotel!

- Received Welcome drink for 2 and Late check out for 3pm given.

- Knowing the hotel was almost 100% full (the higher category wasn't bookable on website the same day) I wasn't expecting them to upgrade me. They didn't offer to so then I asked for one. The lady really tried and finally found one but said I'd need to wait half an hour for it to be ready. I waited and she offered me a drink while I sat in the lobby. Although I had to ask for the upgrade, I was impressed with the way she handled it. She was calling the cleaning staff several times and asked them to prioritize cleaning my upgraded room because I was a Platinum (I overheard her conversation).

- The welcome amenity (2 bags of jelly beans and small bottle of red wine). had already been ready for me in the original room so when I was upgraded, the receptionist must have called for it to be moved to my upgraded room quickly as, when I got my room the member of staff had just left the room!

Bad:

- Despite paying for breakfast in advance, it didn't indicate this on list at restaurant and was asked to pay again. Resolved after contacting reception but the same thing then happened again on 2nd day.

- No dental kits of shaving kits available in the hotel as it seems they had run out. Poor planning for a 4 star hotel!

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? N/A

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?

Yes. Worth it on a sale rate (around 105 pounds per night). Don't think I'd pay 250 a night which is what a last minute booking would have been. I would certainly return if I got a good rate.

It seems very shocking that Platinum members have no room guarantee at Accor!

Indeed. Other chains (Starwood, IHG, Marriott, Hilton from my experience) tend to have a differentiated treatment for their top elites : Check-in process expedited with room keys already made and... often an upgrade!

- What is your Le Club status?
Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?

Yes, very happy

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked standard room, upgraded to executive room

- How are the rooms?
Spacious and modern

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:
I arrived at 7 am and could already go to my room. ^ My Platinum status was recognized immediately (something which does not happen so often in Europe). There is also a great breakfast menu with many food options. Located closely to the airport.

Bad:
-

- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge?
Yes. Lounge was quiete and nice. However for breakfast I would suggest you go to the normal restaurant as the selection there is much better

- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?
Yes I would return. However Accor offers also an IBIS and Novotel option right next to the Pullman. And i don't think it is worth to pay double the price than in the nearby Novotel / IBIS
