I decided to take a boat across the Mekong since it was easier than swimming.

Yes I flew on o/w flights, Bangkok Airways did not let me book the flight back same day so I flew with AirAsia in the morning and back with Bangkok Airways.

Did it last September and worked like a charm. Only hiccup was the line upon arrival was a madhouse for the first 10 minute onslaught and then calmed down.
Did quick in/out yesterday, which meant VOA. New system, new counter, the only way to go. They provide form along with other arrival documents inflight, all one needs is photo and $20. Less than 10 minutes, quite civilized this time around

Are you talking about REP or PNH. The last time I entered through PNH, about 2 weeks ago, I didn't notice any changes to the set up on my walk straight to the immi counters.

It does peeve me that they've (mostly) curtailed use of the steps down to the immi area however. This has always been the easiest way to get ahead of the lazy folk on the (slow) escalator.

I'ts been awhile since I arrived in REP but it looks like that might happen in the next month or two.

At PP airport, immigration counters on right, the VOA counters directly in front when coming down escalator. You hand over form, picture and passport at left counter, then wait as they process, sticker your passport and then call you to right counter to pay $20.

The above setup was different than when I visited last august, or maybe I am confusing with Myanmar, LOL!

On my last entry 2+ weeks ago the counters were in the main immi hall immediately forward as you enter it and everything in the same position as it has been for 10 years.

A bit nitpicky but what you describe is in the main immy hall which is separate from the ante-room containing the escalators (and stairs) and there are two which come down toward each other. One from gate 8 and the other from 5,6, and 7.

This is true except for some rare occasions. ^

hmm. So I applied for my Vietnam visa and it seems I need a visa for Cambodia.
For a group of 5, would it just be better to do the $28 evisa online?

Only $30 if you don't bring photos for the visa. They charge $2 for no photo. Try to hustle off the plane to avoid the wait at customs. If you've got luggage you can take your time.

Best bet is to sit in rows 14-18 on the PG ATR-72. If flying May-September immigration is not as much of a problem as high season though.
