This us an archive thread, the active thread is General discussion of UA's inflight service (Domestic / International, all cabins)
previous thread: COVID Era UA inflight service changes

Thread is for general discussion of the state of UA in-flight service / catering, comparison to other carriers, past UA offerings and concerns with management decisions.

For a specific post about a recent in-flight food, use the appropriate Let's Eat .... thread.

The current Onboard Service descriptions by UA.com

Long-haul international premium cabin dining
North America, Caribbean and Latin America premium cabin dining
United Economy dining

Since the UA website is extremely vague, I'm looking for a few volunteers to submit data, and I will summarize to complete the wiki. kind regards, phkc070408

Why is UA’s food so bad?

Did I miss a memo? UA’s food is rank compared to even AA at this point. Did I miss an employee menu?

Please, let the chicken zatar and vegan meatballs go…..

Cost. That’s about it. United isn’t interested in the cost associated with a higher quality product, and it shows.

If American and Delta can do better in the same markets (they are), it’s not about the supply chain.

I thought it would it would be cool to check out ORD Polaris and hard product wise I think its better than DL where storage is limited & the seat lowers/slides but doesnt just do a nice recline to watch the IFE comfortably. I guess food would be better on DL though. Lounge nicer with United though.

Normally I'd avoid the US airlines for international travel but for South America its not like there are the awesome ME or Asian carriers. Maybe I'll just go AA both ways. Was thinking to try something different for the return.

If you want to feel better about AA I think you just have to come here and read a few United threads lol
If you want to experience the Polaris hard product and the ORD Polaris lounge, but are concerned about soft product, GRU provides several choices to eat prior to departure. If eligible, you can use the Banco Safra lounge (formerly Star Alliance lounge). There are also places before and after passport control in the terminal, such as TGIF and Olive Garden to name a few.

The food is really good here at Attica! Have you tried the tapioca at Folsom Prison? Better than the fried baloney sandwiches at Leavenworth!!

Come on-it is all salty, tasteless, CHEAP dreck

Such a sad state of onboard catering on United. Discretionary paid premium leisure travel is a real thing and I have actively now booked away from UA on two paid biz TATL flights to other OW/Star carriers with competitive aspects (good seats, schedules, similar fares) with catering being the tie breaker. I hope that others are voting with their wallets too and making it known.

Especially in Biz class - booking alternatives has almost zero downside besides perhaps schedule/routing. The thing is, even if it is noticeable drop off in bookings, UA is unlikely to connect it to food/drink. It will be a long slog to make progress.

It is in Y where booking an alternate could mean not having lounge access, baggage allowance, no free E+ seating etc. To me UA is more loyalty sticky when flying in Coach.

Well I slam the catering in every post-flight survey I get, so maybe they will connect it.

Slam away! It’s our only hope at the moment.

I’ll confess to being pleasantly surprised on occasion - usually it’s an AVML or vegetarian meal that gets executed decently.

But I won’t submit that in a review and have them draw the wrong conclusion!

I suspect a copy of your non-UA/non-JV itin / receipt with comments on why would have a greater impact.

I really miss the grilled cheese and tomato soup mid flight. It was one of my favorites.

Other US majors are nowhere near as inconsistent as UA. My recent flights have been on AS, and gosh, it's like day and night in comparison to UA.

yea but AS is still considered a small domestic niche carrier by many.

That doesn't take away their ability to poach business from other carriers, like United, when they go head to head on a particular route. I don't know of anyone who considers them a "small, domestic niche carrier" - they are a strong, viable, appealing carrier with a great product and service.

That's the sad part - it tasted pretty good, it just looked like someone blew up an Olive Garden in the middle of dinner. First, having nicer china would be a plus and look more presentable overall - see how the overall presentation of my JAL dish is enhanced by the color and design of the plate given the dull coloring of the meal itself. Second, if the food comes out watery, especially a dish like this, tip the water out before serving it. Finally, much of the ravioli was glued together in a big mass of pasta starch - if the ravioli were spread out a little better, and the sauce spooned over the ravioli, it would look much better. In fact, it should be prepared as 1. heat ravioli 2. heat sauce separately 3. plate hot ravioli per standard 4. spoon sauce over the ravioli keeping the dish edges clean and avoiding any loose liquid 5. sprinkle parmesan or some garnish prior to serving

It's just not rocket science, it's a little thought and effort with a bigger dose of pride.

Editing to add: everything was covered or sealed except the bread, which was nicely served warm, although it appears Kirby canceled the butter order. So, my guess is however it was setup in the flight kitchen, the entree was put in the oven as-is, taken out when ready, dropped on a tray that had a wrapped salad, sealed cheesecake and other items, and served as-is.

I will say the crew was great, especially given our long delay, and they also came around for drink refills and served a pre-landing snack of either hummus or cheese/meat, or in the case of the POS with a cold and runny nose sitting beside me who though the entire PP armrest space was his, both pre-landing snacks.

Meatballs weren't very good though, so I at least hope UA pulled it off with them on-board because they look tasty. I wasn't terribly hungry so I didn't eat much (caught a bad cold once I got back to LA) but it looked really impressive for an outstation.
You're comparing something that's made on the ground in a kitchen, versus a flight attendant reheating a flash-frozen meal that has been mass produced. That's like comparing Stouffer's to something from the deli in the supermarket.

Also, the meatballs are made from Impossible food, so they are inherently dry and crumbly.

Disagree with your assessment, but let's stay with UA - UA is a large international major carrier who is unable, unwilling, and uninterested to leverage its position to even rotate its god damn menu.for starter. Other carriers change up their menu as frequent as once a month to provide variety and choices for their customers.
